It's SO interesting to see bird movement in slow motion! They jump several body lengths into the air without needing to flap. Then they look around and decide how to twist, fly, fight, or return to earth. All in the blink of an eye. Thank you for sharing this unique view into birds, and all the information you narrate alongside it.

Last June I bought a camera that does super slomo. It's been fascinating to see what I can see with it. I love your description of what YOU saw with it, and I could have used that observation in the narrative. Using the camera to film dragonflies was the highlight of my year. My husband and I are considering going to Ecuador next summer so that I can film dozens of exotic hummingbirds in action--fighting each other too. Wouldn't that be something?!

I love your description of your husband giggling over my narration, Yvonne. I always face writer's block when I start a new script. My husband is used to hearing me grouse for several days, something along these lines: "They're sparrows; they fight a lot; they like woods and feeders. I'm done! I don't know what else to say." He just nods and says, "You'll figure it out. You always do." What I really want is for him to help me out, but he doesn't, and he's right: I do figure it out eventually.

Hi Mrs. Jo! I just wanted to tell you that I'm so grateful and happy for all of these delightful movies you make for us; they've been a big source of joy for me recently, and whenever I feel sad, I always like to come back to your channel and look at them some more, and I always find that they make me feel much better. I love the way you talk about the birds and, really, all creatures, it's so clear that you love them and you treat them all with kindness, and it makes me so happy! Your descriptions are especially wonderful, it's good to see these creatures so thoroughly appreciated, and the way you word things is so wonderful, you give the most creative and lovely commentary and I haven't seen anything similar from anyone else! You are really one of a kind, and my favorite birdwatcher, and it's because of you that I've gotten into gardening this year! Thank you, Jo. I hope that you're well these days!
I also have a request, if you'd be so kind to consider it? I'm asking you to make a movie about mourning doves, please! I've seen them now and then in the background of other movies, but I cannot find one about them specifically, please do let me know if you have made one and I've just missed it. They're one of my favorite birds, I've always been so charmed by them, and they've always been around me as I grew up. Thank you, and I hope you have a wonderful day! I also noted recently that during cold snaps, Blue Jays sit low down on the branches so they can cover their feet with with their feathers. @@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME I was admiring our late light snowfall that clung onto every surface this morning as the weatherman predicted a "pink" sunrise. He was right. One of the prettiest sunrises I've ever seen. I couldn't believe my eyes this when amid the lightly falling snow a pair of bluebirds were at my feeders...... feeding for their lives along with the many others. 6 Goldfinch and a bluebird were feeding at same time and now they've been here all day. I've never had an E.B. at any feeder ever. I've tried dried worms. They never were game enough to try. For amusement sake, I bought "bluebird suet pellets" from Tractor Supply. I think that is what tempted them at first. That feeder is out of sight from my windows but I had noticed the level dropping. I'd assumed the starlings were the main takers. I'm walking on air today. I had to share with you because only you would not laugh at such a statement. So for rest of morning, I picked up my knitting and sat by window and enjoying my new dining guests eating my hulled mix I've been using of late!

It's always a happy day when Jo puts out a new video! Your videos always make me smile and laugh and again, your commentary is second to none! I've got a grandfather who is 94 and he has definitely worn out his old jalopy, for sure. We appreciate the videos regardless of the time schedule.
I've been having a red-shouldered hawk sitting right outside my bedroom and kitchen windows. Got to work from home the other day and he was right out my sliding glass door just perched and hunting. It must be a good hunting spot because he's always getting something at least twice each time I watch him. He's been nicknamed Big Boi because he definitely is a big boy. He doesn't seem to scare the birds or the squirrels though, and they seem to co-exist near one another just fine. It's little vermin hiding in the leaves on the embankment at the back of my house that he is after! I'm hoping he catches a copperhead or two as well!

Thank you for telling me how my videos lift your spirits. I hope to make it to 94 without the wheels coming off my jalopy. 🥴
Oh man, how I wish I could be at your house filming that Red-shouldered Hawk hunting! And I hear you about the Copperheads. When I was a girl, we had horses that I had to feed twice a day. One day, as I stepped into the corn crib to fill a coffee can with grain, I spotted a rusty chain in the hay on the floor and would have stepped on it ... except that it started moving. Whew! Close call.

@@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME Oh man, that must have been quite the surprise! Just a few months ago I was pulling weeds around my neighbor's house. I was so lucky that I had gloves on because in the tall weeds that I had pulled up, came with it a juvenile Copperhead. It was literally in my hand Jo! In those moments it's amazing how time slows down and how you can count the seconds that it takes your brain to process the situation, set the Copperhead down and go hightailing it into the house. It's a small miracle that it didn't strike! Now I'm going to let my neighbor take care of his own weeds, because a repeat of that situation would not be a good time! I've got a pack of coyotes out in the woods right by my house as well. It's really interesting hearing them hunt at night because they almost sound like monkeys or demons when they sound off! I broke up a fight one night and I didn't know what I had broken up. It was quite a noisy affair though, and sounded rather violent. Well, it wasn't the next day but the day after that that I was out doing some yard work and I found a little fawn that I named Dottie with her head twisted backward and who had clearly passes onto another realm. It was really sad, but it was interesting to at least get to see a baby fawn that close up and actually look it over.

Oh, Sarah, I've been having so much fun with the camera I bought for super slomo, starting with dragonflies. One thing it's good for--I don't know whether you noticed it--is flight shots. Usually film of a bird taking off is worthless because it happens too fast to show up effectively on film. Without the slomo, the bird is just suddenly gone from the frame. But I can capture flight in slomo and speed it up so that it looks normal while actually being slower than real life. My husband and I are thinking of visiting Ecuador next summer, specifically to give me a chance to film outrageously beautiful hummingbirds fighting each other.

I'm happy to hear the video interested you so much, Jeremiah. As a photographer you get glimpses of what happens when the birds move so fast. The nice thing about video in super slomo is that it gives you the whole sequence. The downside is that my camera has very little range, and the footage is never as crisp as it ought to be. And boy, are you right about the need for good lighting! I've asked the sparrows repeatedly to move to an area with better light, and they just don't cooperate.

I later got a platform feeder, although it was close to the shrubs, the sparrow didn't come onto the feeder. Sadly, that sparrow hasn't come back yet. But this is one heck of a bird. I assume you have squirrel baffles on the tube feeders, Tony (ruclips.net/video/a62jsnt8O-U/видео.html). Of course, there's no keeping them away from what you spread for the ground feeders, but the squirrels don't care for nyjer seeds. You might find the info in this film useful in figuring out how to feed birds and attract them to your yard: ruclips.net/video/2PLfBIge5vU/видео.html.

    • @NavvyMom

Tony, good luck with thwarting the squirrels. I gave up years ago, and just feed everyone. I have one very pushy squirrel who has progressed over the two years I've known her to helping herself to the raw almonds I keep in my left coat pocket for her.
I had read that squirrels don't like safflower seeds, so tried those. They worked for a time, but my squirrels developed a taste for them eventually. Once I foolishly mixed them with sun hearts and filled a feeder. The squirrels parked on the feeder in turns and picked out the hearts, letting the safflower fall. This made the white throats and mourning doves very happy.

Memphis, TN. Oh I love this one about the white throated sparrow!!!!! Thank you for directing me to it!!! You are so talented, I just love your style!!! Are you an author of any books? Because of your video I realize I had just about everything needed to attract these feisty sparrows! A running stream, a good sized stick bramble( they loved it!!!!) and of course a constant supply of food! I had the one with yellow and I absolutely loved watching them along with all the junkos who way outnumbered the sparrows!!!! I was able for the first time in my life to identify the beautiful song to this unlikely candidate!!!!! I remember hearing this song as a young girl at my grandparents who lived in the hill country of Texas, butI never knew the bird who was singing!
Last year was extremely difficult as I went through caring for my parents who passed 2 months apart!! Most of last year was spent in Texas, and when I got back home I NEEDED the birds!!!!! They brought me so much joy, watching them directly out my kitchen window! I make homemade suet ( gets expensive) for them. Around the first part of January, I had a visitor who thrilled me to pieces! When I looked him up (I had never seen one before) I discovered him to be a bullocks oriole!!!! I quickly looked up as much info as I could on this gorgeous visitor and realized he was way out of winter range! I didn’t expect him to come back, but he was a daily visitor until March!!!!! I felt like God knew of my sadness and sent this amazing flash of orange every day!!!! Did I ever struggle with keeping that suet feeder supplied with all my eastern bluebirds, nuthatches, woodpeckers, etc….
Yeah, I’m sorry to hear about there being no replacement parts and you are needing to slow down your activities! Thank you for making these wonderful bird videos!!! I have such a love for birds even as a child. I don’t know if I could count the number of baby birds I raised in my younger years! One was just a sparrow who fell out of a nest that was way too high to place back. He was featherless and must have injured something when he fell because he never could fly. So he stayed in a cage and when I got home from school I would let him hop in the garden to forage for food and I did my homework in a climbing tree and that sparrow was with me!!! We had moved from Houston where I had lots of friends ( I was 11) to a very small town with no one but the birds! Sorry for rambling on. I will be watching all of your wonderful videos!!!! Thank you!!!!!💕🌸

Considering the lively interest you have had in birds since childhood, it’s fun for me to recommend a couple of other movies I’m pretty sure you’ll find useful. I did one called birds on bark butter a year ago, and it might inspire you to put up bark butter to attract woodpeckers and nuthatches. The White-throats love it too. And if you decide you’d like to add that to the way you feed birds, take a look at the top comment because it offers a recipe for homemade bark butter. The other suggestion I to offer is the movie I made about Juncos.
