Hi, Mikel! After a long day at work, I was delighted to find you had uploaded a new video! Plus, this one answered many of my questions about Jimi's early tones, which are some of my favorites. Thank you for your expertise and presentation!
You confirmed for me something I discovered on my own. Was messing around with my Marshall trying to find a clean Wind Cries Mary strat tone and couldn't find it in the high gain input on my Plexi. Plugged into the bottom left one and there it was. You are correct the earlier recordings of his are cleaner than we think.
Also, one other note on my tone journey...I found that my fuzz face sounded so much better at this setting. Definitely gets that singing Hendrix fuzz lead sound. Enjoyed your video a lot.
@@MikelBluni Will do! Its interesting because I was trying to lower input gain by replacing V1 with a 12AT7, so a similar idea but different implementation. I didn’t think to just plug in the lower input! Brilliant
Yeah, Jimi was an artist just at using his equipment, if you watch some of his live later shows, the sounds he was able to get was amazing. Sometimes everything would be on, and he'd be going from the Uni-Vibe pedal the Vox Wah, then leaving the wah cocked, switching the fuzz face on and off, just amazing. Other times he'd just have the amp on, use the volume to get different sounds, and use either the Fuzz or the Wah as a boost for the solo's, and sometime the wah and the Fuzz at the same time. Another thing is that he played different genre's of music with the same equipment, and in the later years pretty much the only change was he'd switch out the Strat for some kind of humbucking Gibson for the Blues songs. He doesn't really get enough credit for the absolute volume of sounds and guitar tones he innovated, as well as for his songwriting, composing, and producing. He was already a force of nature on Are You Experienced?, and by the time Electric Ladyland, Band Of Gypsies, and his posthumous releases, he was light years ahead of most bands in what music was being made and where it was going, people didn't catch up until 5-10 years until after he passed away, along with creating the genre of Psychedelic Funk, along with Sly Stone and Parliment/Funkadelic. His blues stuff is some of the best blues I have ever heard, even when he is doing a cover of blues song, it is innovative, and he ends up owning the song. That is the mark of a true musical artist. He did the same thing with Dylans "All Along the Watchtower". I am still trying to figure out his early playing style and equipment use, it is a lot more detailed than "get a Marshall Plexi, play through G12H 55hz Greenback speakers, get a Fuzz Face and a Vox Wah. And his early set up was simpler by far, especially how he used things, than his later gear set up. Along with that, there are small details like the Octavio/a wasn't ready to be used outside of the studio, so Hendrix would use a cocked-wah sound with the Vox-Wah and the Fuzz Face during live performance of the solo on Purple Haze. at least that is what I read, not sure if it is true, but it sounds similar to the Octavio/a. And then there is the dirty clean sound of the Fuzz Face clicked on, but the volume rolled off, so you get that glassy, dirty clean sound out of the Marshall.
Hello Bro. Your tone for Stone Free, especially, basically nails Jimi's tone 100%, man. Amazing the difference between Volume at 6 & Volume at 10. Just from the guitar. The idea of keeping the Fuzz on all the time, at a lower gain setting, also seems logical. And your vid shows that it works. Also, it seems that the overall volume is still fairly up there with the guitar's volume at 2. Must be the way the Fuzz boosts the volume. Great vid, man. Peace.
I am going to woodshed with this video! I have a Marshall Super 100JH amp (those came out in 2006), a Jam Pedals Fuzz Phrase and two 4x12 cabs with Celestial G12M greenbacks and a few good strats. I may never come ot of the woodshed again! Thank you Mikel.
@@MikelBluni Hi Mikel, I am using a Fryette PS-100 Power Station. It is the best sounding attenuator I have heard. When I bought this amp, I opened it to check the bias. I was astounded and scared to find the B+ voltage is 545 VDC! Which means its Loud :)
Not sure what happened to my last follow-up. I was saying you can get factory-matched sets of ShuGuang 6550(A or B) tubes for ~1/2 the price of JJ or other brands. ShuGuang tubes sound better than JJ-- more lively and more like the original Tung Sol’s than the current Russian Tung Sol RI's. The 6550B is supposed to sound more like a KT88- probably just cleaner and tighter. There’s a clarity and dynamic attack you’ll get with 6550 at 600V over EL34 at 450V that generate more 3rd and more smeared harmonics. You can also get ShuGuang 12AX7B and 12AT7 tubes cheap. You could get 2x each of what the amp requires (in case you get a bad one or two). The low noise/high gain 9th-gen ShuGuang 12AX7B sound great in Marshall-style amps, but the more expensive Mil Spec EHx 7025EH is probably the best currently made 12ax7/ecc83 variant.
Early Marshall cabinets contained Goodman speakers. They were switched out to Celestion in early 1967, being less expensive than the Goodman. The old cab I have contains four 30 watt ones, and would originally have a small Bass logo in the upper corner.
Hey Mikel, Ive been putting together my all or nothing Jimi rig and was wondering how you would approach his fender amp tone from some of the studio recordings. Seems like alot of the clean stuff especially from '68-'70 were Fenders
What I’ve found in my research is that on Electric Ladyland we hear a Dual Showman and a Bassman besides his usual Plexis. If I were in the game I’d opt for a Fender 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb. It features also Bassman tones ;-) ✌️🎸🔥
Great video! I have a question, I watched an old video of yours, explaining the effects Hendrix used. You said in the video that he didn't use fuzz for some of the songs in Band of Gypsys, like power of soul. Do you know which songs did he use and didn't use fuzz from the album? Thanks
First of all great video, but to add to the discussion.... this picture is from the Beat Club recording in Germany....I read that Jimi was quite annoyed with those TV shows because of the low volume that was requested. Can't remember where I read it, but it makes sense...imagine turning the two full stacks he had to ten and using the other input... The audience was shocked anyway! Eddie Kramer said about the first album, that Jimis guitar was unbelievably loud. Lots of the big sound comes from the mic bleeding of the other instruments. Apart from that...I like the sounds you get anyway...the truth is always hard to find!
You have to get another 2X12 cabinet under yours 😅 That would be cool! In real i think Hendrix just roll the guitar volume for the feel that he feel, like clean for relaxing stuff and gain for let's party stuff. I really like Marshall bare tone with strat without fuzz, but sometimes fuzz is good for gain and fuzz cleans.
What would your suggestions to be used for a fuzz sound with the Boss Katana/GT type of effects? The Studio Rats use the Rat fuzz/distorton, as well as the 60's Fuzz, and another professional patch maker for Boss uses the Muff Fuzz, but I have found the only one that cleans up with the volume pot is the 60's Fuzz, and that is supposed to be the Fuzz Face model of fuzz. Shame about the Copyright with RUclips, they are really being not fair or right with the songs being played and demonitizing videos. It is absolutely criminal. Also what kind of guitar pick are you using, and what thickness? I have found that the pick Jimi Hendrix used most of the time is best suited for the Hendrix music and style of playing, and that is the Fender 351 Medium Celluloid. Some picks that I use other that the Fender Celluloid Medium is the Dunlop Tortex 0.60 and the Dunlop Tortex Flex 0.60, and also Fender, Dunlop and D'Andrea Nylon Picks at either 0.73mm or 0.88mm..
