After the initial excitement of finally getting a shot at an elk, Jeff and Mark Skousen struggle to find blood. Doubt and disappointment start to creep in as they scour the hillside for any sign of a hit. Team Pure Elevation is running low on water, and Team Angry Spike is lured in to set up on another rainforest ghost. And Corey and Donnie are hiking into the distant wallow to search for the big bull they spotted during the morning hunt....not all elk hunts end the way you envision them ending.

Great lesson in this episode, thanks. No two hunts are the same. No two elk are the same. No two shots are the same, even though shot placement might be. The beauty and chaos of hunting elk is that there is no normal. Perfect shot on a great bull and it didn't do "normal". Glad they located it!

This episode hits home with me from my experience this year on my first elk hunt ever. I was hunting in Colorado on my first elk hunt ever. After 8 long days of putting on a lot of miles and elevation, I finally saw my first elk. I stumbled upon a few bulls hitting a wallow in a small Aspen patch and a bull popped out and started bugling. (A first for me so that was awesome!) Once he was out of view, I made my way down to get into position. The bull was out of sight when I got into position but we knew where they all were. My caller started with a couple cow calls and BOOM, a bull started running out of the Aspen patch, straight at me. He veered off to my right but was still closing the distance fast until he didn't see any cows where he heard them. By this time he was at 4 YARDS, broadside, and I put ALL of my sights behind the shoulder and let it rip! Well we had great blood for about 130 yds and then, nothing. We looked util late into the night and came up with nothing. We gave him enough time to expire before we searched but somehow he snuck away on us. We had a dog tracker the next day and continued to look for 4 days after that and came up empty. Needless to say, this was the most epic hunting experience of my life, it was also the most disappointing. I feel for the Skousen and having to notch their tag without recovering their elk. This experience has just lit a huge fire in me for elk hunting and it is now my favorite thing to do for sure. Thank you Elk101 for your content that you provide. It deffinatlly helped me prepare for my last trip and I pick up another little thing to use for future elk trips!
