Ticket To Ride- The Beatles (Guitar Cover)

- Thanks to meticulous notes that George Martin made during the Help! album sessions, we know exactly what guitars and instruments were used on Ticket To Ride!
The backing track consisted of George Harrison on his Rickenbacker 360/12 12-string, John Lennon strumming rhythm guitar on his Fender Stratocaster, Paul played his Hofner bass, and Ringo on drums
Martin notes that only two guitar overdubs were recorded:
George on Stratocaster
and Paul on Epiphone Casino
This recording was the first session for the new Help! album. It took place on February 15th 1965. At this point, the Beatles were using Vox AC-100 amps exclusively in the studio for their electric guitars
Hats off to Ably House and Michael Sokil who discovered the little Epiphone Casino noodling at 0:21 and 0:52
Paul overdubbed his Casino on the breaks before the verses, and the outro solo. He most likely used his bridge pickup with the tone knob rolled down, which is what I did here too
Because the only other guitar overdub listed by Martin was Harrison on his Fender Stratocaster, it's safe to assume that George was the one playing the single A-string notes AND the volume pedal swells in the choruses. This is further proven if you listen to the stereo version of the song and hear that both the A-string stabs and swells are in the same location (middle)
The chord that occurs during the volume swell section "ticket to ri-hi-hide" is a mysterious one that was hard to crack. It turns out all three guitars are playing different chords at once. The Rickenbacker is playing X25432 which is a G major 7 with a low B. John's Strat plays XX0432 which is a D6
The overdubbed Stratocaster plays XX5422 which is Gmaj7 with a flat 5
However, at 1:00 John accidentally plays XX0532 which is a D7 chord
I'm using my 1999 Rickenbacker 360/12v64 with roundwound strings into my Vox AC-30. I added a lot of compression afterwards with Waves plug-ins, and Abbey Road Plate Reverb on all the guitars
My Epiphone Casino is a new 2021 USA model with Gibson P-90 pickups in a Royal Tan finish. This is also going into my AC-30 top boost channel
For John's Stratocaster part, I'm using my 2022 Custom Shop Fender Strat straight into the AC-30 TB channel. To my ears it sounds like he was using position 2, which is the middle and bridge pickups out of phase. This was only possible on their vintage strats by jamming the switch between the middle and bridge positions
For George's Stratocaster overdub, I'm using the same Custom Shop Sonic Blue Strat into the Top Boost channel of the AC-30. But first I'm using my Analogman King of Tone pedal as a boost, into my Ernie Ball Volume Pedal
My Gear:
1999 Rickenbacker 360/12V64 (Scatterwound Pickups)
2022 Fender Custom Shop '63 Journeyman Stratocaster
2021 Epiphone Casino USA Royal Tan
Vox AC-30C2X (Celestion Alnico Blues)
Neumann TLM-103
Analogman King of Tone (Boost side)
Ernie Ball VP Jr. Volume Pedal (Analogman Taper Mod)

Wow, George's amazing playing is all over this song. Don't think I've ever seen a pedal used this early in music before.
This absolutely rocks! Tones are on point as usual. I love everything about this cover, everything.
The amount of chime form the rick 12 string and Strat combo is absolutely killer.
Spot on, fav part is that sweet pedal work at 0:30
The magical shimmer of a Rickenbacker 12, great work!
Bloody marvellous to see and hear!! Thank you
It's the same as the record! Amazing job, Sam!
Sounds amazing though! You definitely nailed that strat rhythm part sound wise.
this is some beautiful work, sam. it just popped up in my feed, and it's already sent me back to the track (and to the books)! the three guitars on the "ri-hi-hide" part is something else-a challenge to my old ears. thanks!
I was missing the 12 string Rick!! Glad to see it on a such classic. Awesome quality as always, Sam.
Awesome cover! Ticket To Ride was really one of the first songs in which the Beatles got into heavy, complex layering of instruments.
Amazing job as always!
A classic that was needed here! Perfect cover
Ticket to Ride is one of my favorite Beatle songs.
Reading how you re-created it gives me some insight into the genius of the Beates, creating it.
Love it!
Big jangle! Love it.
That 360v64 is amazing. Great work again Sam! I love that little E chord walk at :35 on the 12 string. Classic Harrison.
Perfection!
Outstanding as always Sam!!
I always forget they had their strats as early as Help! Rubber Soul is always my first thought when I see that strat.
Absolutely amazing cover as always! 🎟🚆❤
Called it!
Love the use of the volume pedal in this song
Thank ya so much,Mr P.- they should have had you perform at the 'Beatlefest'!!
You never fail to impress me. I really love those rickenbackers❤
Yeah I would've never guessed that the overdub was the casino, that's a good catch. and what a treat to hear AND look at that beautiful rick 12 string, you've gotta bring it out more.
the Casino is all over Help
Your videos never fail to impress me. You’ve captured every sound so well.
0:29 I will never NEVER be able to get over that sound there with the volume pedal
Gorgeous playing as always.
Thanks! Love your channel
Awesome surprise drop on a Wednesday morning!
Fantastic as always!
Amazing cover as always Sam! Keep up the great work!
I never get tired of listening to that song. love the sound of the rick 12 string
Excellent as always Sam!!!
Amazing work!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great job Sam. This is one of their best songs.
This is my favorite song.Great cover!
Another excellent job my friend
Amazing job! Bravo!
AWESOME!
The tone is spot on!
Bravo! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Incredible job!
Whoa - fantastic Sam!
This is fantastic!! Easily the best cover of Ticket to Ride on RUclips! I’ve always been interested in the rhythm part specifically during the verses because I’ve noticed you and Michael Sokil play A to D but I’ve also seen others play A to Asus2, both sound great but I think the way you play it is more accurate!
Thanks, yeah I listened closely to the isolated track and he definitely plays A to D. But there are a few times where it sounds like Asus4. I included those as well here
@@sampopkin You used rounds on your 360/12? Didn’t George use Flats during this period on his 12-string?
@@beatlesfan2884 he probably did. I was having issues with flatwounds because they added a lot of tension to my neck
Love how we can tell which Beatle is playing what just by the shirts😀
So good !
Great sounds Sam
Awesome 🙂🎶🎵🎸
😎🎸 😎🥁 😎🎸 😎🎸 Beatles
Got this idea from a comment in different video: what's being played from 2:48 sounds A LOT like the main riff of "Another Girl".
Makes sense since they were both recorded on the same day
Beautiful tones on beautiful guitars! Great stuff man!
Thanks Liam! We own the exact same year and type of Rick I believe
The perfect way to start off the morning
Lovely

YEAH!!! I KNEW IT!!!🥰😜Hats off, this is stunning.🤩🤩
I knew you would be excited lol
I didn't notice that the rythm guitar was playing A and also D (I was only playing A like the arpegios). Thanks for this discovery. I like to see you play, as it is very well filmed and it seems I am watching the Beatles playing in their studio, therefore including all the little tricks that are behind the recording. Great job 👍.
All the best,
knarf from France 🎸🇨🇵
talent not wasted
Friggin’ awesome... i wish you & youtube were around when i was 18, or 19 years old...... the breakdown aspect of this is insanely awesome, & the potential to learn & be inspired by these vids is insanely awesome. Good lord, never stop...when youve done all the Beatles songs, do the demo/alternate version stuff from the anthologies, lol, & then do all the solo album stuff...then, who knows? Who cares? Just keep it up, these vids will be in the library of congress one day, or somethin’, idk.
Very nice of you. Don’t worry, when I run out of their discog there’s the anthology, drum and bass covers, solo stuff. I’m not worried about running out of material lol
Great cover. As an intermediate guitarist who loves the Beatles I come here quite a bit to challenge myself on a new guitar part. That Rickenbacker sounds really nice too.
This cover is perfect accept for the mixing and also the casino needed to have a brighter tone.
Замечательная работа ! У тебя должно быть гораздо больше подписчиков. Ты заслуживаешь лучшего !
Super!!!
Awesome. Hints of ‘You Can’t Do That’ in George’s playing, what do you think?
Never thought about it but yeah!
I miss Sokil, but these are actually more useful because every note of every guitar can be quickly transcribed.
You should do Isn’t It a Pity, slide guitar is awesome
Just come across your site. Great. Would be nice to see Bass parts.
I ways thought that ticket to ride had acoustic guitars, guess I'm fooled. Thanks Sam! good work on I get tired too btw
Thanks!
Nailed both the tone and the playing. Personally, I would love to see more early Beatles stuff. Did you get my tab of What You're Doing?
Are those two different strats?
Awesome cover!
Yes John and George both played Strats
Sorry I realized you might’ve been asking if I own two different Strats. I don’t- the lighting just looks different in this video
@@ronanfitzgerald1507 lol
🎸Loved it. definitely 👀'd those all-important John Lennon open string passing chords! Get them right (like you do) and it just propels the song.
in response to your question, yes.
i do love this new cover.
Excellent work, Sam. What kind of strings did you use on the Strat?
Ernie Ball Slinky 10-46
@@sampopkin, I previously used the Ernie Ball 9-42, but I have been using D’Addario XL strings.
🙏🙏🙏
Amazing job as always Man! Btw just curious but there appeared to be some debate on who wrote the main guitar riff. Wasn't it George who wrote it?
Good question, I’m not sure about that actually. I’m assuming George too
Great cover as always!
Just one question: is it possible that the D chord in the verses is a D/F# (on the D string), or a different version of D? I've watched a different video in which that's the case.
It’s possible, John often played D with the pinky on 4th fret of D string
😊
that sounds amazing!!!btw try get a gibson j160e to cover the early beatles and do john's part for i feel fine
Want to donate to make it possible? 😂
@@sampopkin i dont really have a gibson j160e since i'm saving up money to get a casino
I heard that sigma guitars (who usually make guitars inspired by Martin) make a J160e inspired guitar at the fraction of the price.
@@Luke_D9 yeah and i think you're able to get it, sam
@@sampopkin Wait don't you have a Gibson?
Could you please tell me what AMP effects are set here? I'm a beginner and my guitar sounds more like an accoustic. Here you have some nice clean tone with a bit of... I don't know what exactly 😅
I mean the beginning riff especially.
I plugged into the top boost channel of the AC30 amp. No pedals, but I added a lot of boost and compression with my computer software afterwards
I thought that the rhythmic was John hitting the strings that the A string resonated like Helter Skelter, that's how John plays it live, right?
George is playing the A string single notes on the record. Live they didn’t do that, just John strumming and George doing the riff
@@sampopkin Oh, thanks.
Hey man I don’t know if you take request at all but I would love if you could do a cover of the guitar for Poor Moon by Canned Heat. Thanks!
Don’t know that song, I’ll have to check it out!
I'm wondering where is John's blue strat today. After Sgt pepper's, He never showed up playing strat in some photos during recording session.
Is it the same with his black strat like he just changed the paintjob or different guitar ?
You’re right, the only time after Pepper that his Strat is seen is in the Imagine recording sessions. He put a maple neck on it and George used it to play slide guitar on that album in 1971
What tuning do you use?
Standard
@@sampopkin many times i've play and i feel the tune is diferent, and if i try to sing is very high, anyways good video man you're awesome
Thanks! It’s in standard tuning, however it’s a little bit flat of A440. I tuned the guitars down just a little
do you have a rickenbaker 325
I don’t, I wish I did. Fortunately this song didn’t use one
@@sampopkin I have a Rickenbacker 325v63
Can you make a tutorial how to learn a song by ear?
Sure
@@sampopkin thanks a lot man
Is this flatwounds on this guitars ?
No all roundwounds
@@sampopkin do you know if the beatles used them ? i no that paul did.
but if they use both , in wich period they used each one ?
They used flatwounds (for the most part) from 1958-1965. By Revolver they were using roundwounds. But paul used tapewounds or flats on all his basses throughout the beatles
@@sampopkin thanks maan , deluxe information
@@sampopkin Do you think they used flats on the J160s in the early years?
Sounds great--that rhythm part on the Strat is really odd, I assume that's Lennon.
Yep that’s John haha
The guitar chords and riffs are good but the boots aren't that at all: they're not the right ones!
😂
I’ve got a shoe jackal 😉
first?
It seems so
