paulStrech is based on phase vocoding FFT technique. It has nothing to do with granular synthesis. This is why all the parameters are spectrum related and not time related.
I like you giving credit to Paul, not many people mention him. He not only created paulstretch but also the might zynaddsubfx synth and a bunch of others
Ah man such a throwback to when I first started making music, this thing was all over the place, yet to this day I still love and use this software. That moment you realize you can stretch a single drum sound under 1 second long into a sound that if it would play continuously _AND_ you want to hear the end of it, it should've started playing in the times of the ancient Egyptians 😅 Yeah, that kinda went over my head a little as a 15 year old kid.
When I first discovered Paulstretch within Audacity I was blown aways by the interesting effect it has on any sound. It was basically the first contact I had with sound design. I slapped it many sounds just to see what they'd end up being after paulstretching. Seeing it as a VST with really cool additional options is like rediscovering this effect again
This plugin didn't open any new doors for me... It set C4 charges and blew the doors off the frame. This one is a gem. So fun to mess around with and create soundscapes. 😄
Wooowwww, this totally reminded me of Pretending by Sophie and after looking it up, it actually turns out this was the plugin she used. I knew she used time stretching in that song but I had no idea how it sounded so clean and huge. Thanks for bringing this plugin to my attention!
Yes! Without a doubt, hands down, the BEST demonstration and simply-stated explanation of this amazing tool. Thank you SO much Cameron! You are still and always, The Man.
PaulStretch was made famous by movie composer Paul Leonard Morgan in the movie Dredd. The 'Slo-Mo' drug scenes are all done with Paul Stretch. Great movie too 👌
The first thing that i did with PaulXStretch was take the tinniest fraction of a seconds distorted bass guitar from one of Napalm Deaths later albums, and i stretched it out to over an hour. Hearing the fluctuations of sound ebb and flow over a long period of time while thinking that all came from such a short amount of audio was just mind blowing.
I have so many plugins already but I keep getting more! Thank you for sharing these amazing free tools with the world. Seriously, I used to just take sounds, reverse them and add tons of delay and reverb for pads. This thing has it all in one package. It supports exported samples and has great effects and features. Much thanks!!!
record the output and then load into Synclavier V from Arturia, then "resample" it using resampling feature and it turns it into an FM/Additive patch that is playable in tune all over the keyboard
For anyone if this is not working (stretch sound not coming) in Logic, try clicking on the num outs button + -, now with the play button engaged and capture off it should be good to go.
This is one hell of a tutorial, great job! I was messing around with this plugin ever since you mentioned it in a previous video, but this actually helps a ton to actually understand what's going on.
Yes. The big secret is out thanks to this tutorial... Much to the displeasure of plugin manufacturers who charge many £$,s for a product that can only do a fraction of what PS is capable of..
Fantastic intro and how-to for this plugin I just discovered. Will have to come back to take in the range of settings (a bit info overload for me at this time - lol).
This is a very helpful tutorial for a newb like me. thank you. What an amazingly useful plugin - I can hear this in soundtracks everywhere. Perfect for science fiction or creating dramatic tension in other genres.
gah i just found this plugin from your other recent video (7 free plugins) and it's amazing! i want to figure out how to use it to constantly keep reading new audio from a mic, and using let's say the last 10 seconds, so it can keep changing... what a killer tool... and then i go look for how to use it, and there you are again! thanks cameron
I got this plugin yesteryear, and I played with it trying to get it to produce any sort of sound, nothing. Low and Behold I just have to press the "Capture" and enable "Play When Host Transport is Running". Lmao... Thanks Again.
Awesome video man. I've heard of PaulStretch for a long time but never really got the timer to sit down and mess with it. This video made it's implementation much easier to approach, so i'll def start playing around with it this week. Thanks!
7:28... soundtracks for spooky media :) 13:32... overtones! But years ago, I did something like this with something. I'll keep it at that. 18:52 and indeed I put it through a reverb. It took ages though and wasn't real time at all, so this is much better
Cameron is right on the nail with regard to the value and creativity of this sound design tool.. it is absolutely amazing and can produce not only profoundly dark materials but also astounding landscapes of beauty no one has ever heard before 👏👏🦄🙏🙏🏿🎩👍
Cameron, like ALL of your videos, this one was excellent. Although it's easy enough to drag sliders L and R until our fingers bleed, hoping that we'll get something we like, it really helps to know a bit about what the controls are supposed to do! I would never have figured 90% of this w/o your help. Thanks..from ALL of us! Best to you. 😀
Be great to put a midi note to pitch PITCHSHIFTER to live play the blurs melodically before further processing...thanks for always pulling out the depth of softwares gems.
Thank you for this very easy to understand tutorial! In Cubase I was wondering how to record the audio coming out of it ... it's very easy: Just set the locators, create an empty event via double-click and render it in place , done :-)
Thank you so much for this tutorial! This is what I really want because I didn't understand quite well the amount of stuff you can do with this masterpiece of a plugin ahahah
As soon as you started stretching at about 5 mins, I immediately thought of the song The Weight of Gold by Forest Swords. Would be surprised to know this wasn't involved on that track. Probably gonna start hearing this everywhere lol
This is one seriously impressive and addictive tool! The one thing you didn't get into is: How do you stop processing every song and sound you can come up with?
Not sure if anyone will see this after so long, but once I record into PaulStretch, there is no audible playback, nor does the play bar pass over the waveform. Nothing is frozen, nothing seems to be lagging, but I can't get ANY sound out of the plugin. I'm using studio one if that makes a difference. Any help would be incredibly appreciated. I can change all the settings around and whatnot, but when I press *play*, it simply does nothing.
What I'm trying to figure out is how to feed Simpler into PaulStretch so that I can trigger bits of a sample in Passthrough mode and have it stretched in realtime. Could someone help me with this? My first introduction to PaulStretch was through Audacity and it completely redirected my approach towards music-making. I've since been exploring a sample-based project using an MPD218 and a Minilogue through Ableton Live, and I had been relying on PaulStretch-ed clips from Audacity to trigger as clips. Your comprehensive breakdown of this plugin version has opened up so many possibilities for how I can incorporate it into my Ableton Live workflow. Thank you so much!
awesome upload, so informative and insightful.......and hey, what are you using for a microphone? Such a great dense sound, and no ambient reflections distracting from it...
Yet another fabulous tutorial. Many thanks. I'm heading to the download now. Are any of the controls on this capable of MIDI Learn or LFO control? Be nice to be able to automate the playback over time.
trying to get a feel for the workflow in ableton - are you putting paulxstretch at the end of a MIDI track after VST/effects, or printing audio and bringing it into paul stretch on a separate audio track? I have it on an audio track and am capturing the audio but when i try to play it back within paulxstretch on the audio track, it isn't playing.
Maybe an Ableton issue but I'm trying the following: add paulxstretch after a VST on a MIDI track, hit capture and play something (I see the waveform in paulxstretch), and then when I either play back the MIDI track in my DAW, or hit play in paulxstretch, nothing is happening (no sound nor playhead playing in paulxstretch) - any ideas? Thank you.
Great hint to an interesting plug-in. Quick question: Is it possible to assign (e.g. in Bitwig) some of PaulStretch's sound changing parameters to controllers and adjust them in realtime using a MIDI controller?
Thanks SO much for this! This is genuinely awesome. Quick question - is there any way internally to control the stereo spread? These extreme shifting algorithms really make the stereo field wild and my correlation meter is yelling at me
Literally cannot for the life of me understand how to export the audio from the standalone?? Or even from the plug in?? Like when i render and try to bring the file from my desktop to logic it just says file empty??
Any other cool free plugins you've been digging lately? 🤔

can we just acknowledge that this is the only comprehensive guide to paulstretch in existence? thanks venus!
indeed - really deep dives the plugin
I used PS for almost a decade now, but it is so easily recognized when someone used it, which is a bad thing.
That's amazing, General! Would rather that content from you!
AMEN!!
You nailed it. Props to VenusTheory
I like you giving credit to Paul, not many people mention him. He not only created paulstretch but also the might zynaddsubfx synth and a bunch of others
Paul is a legend! I do really want to do something with Zynaddsubfx in the future as well as it's a super interesting synth.
I didn't realise that! Thank you, i learned something today. 🙂
Ah man such a throwback to when I first started making music, this thing was all over the place, yet to this day I still love and use this software.

Now that is an awesome thought!!!!
These piano sounds with Paulstretch are by far the most peaceful thing I've ever heard. I could listen to them one million (1,000,000) times.
Thanks Paul, wherever you are

god...this was the best kept secret in sound design. I'm so glad more people have access to it!
love paulstretch, once used it to provide a soundtrack at an art exhibition... was perfect!
Sheesh, PaulStretch escaped my mind, I loved this piece of software, thanks for reminding me.
For anyone if this is not working (stretch sound not coming) in Logic, try clicking on the num outs button + -, now with the play button engaged and capture off it should be good to go.
Thanks for sharing, I didn’t know about this plug-in. And thanks to Paul!

I'd like to thank Audacity and Paulstretch for introducing me to the world of sound design and making music
Me too :)!

I grabbed this August last year ... then forgot about it 🙄
Thanks for reminding me.
And for the usage tips. 😉
I have just now heard about this. Thanks for the tips. This should be fun to use as I like to play with ambient sounds
@Sambience

Been using this since like 2013. Legendary software.
best Paulstretch tutorial on the internet so far, thank you!

Very very nice! I love Paul Strech, but this thing, kind of take’s it further! Can’t believe it is free! Thanks for a very cool walk-through!
Thank you for this very easy to understand tutorial! In Cubase I was wondering how to record the audio coming out of it ... it's very easy: Just set the locators, create an empty event via double-click and render it in place , done :-)
Excellent dive into the parameters. Many thanks. Time to play.
Thank you so much for breaking down all the components; this helped a ton!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! This is what I really want because I didn't understand quite well the amount of stuff you can do with this masterpiece of a plugin ahahah

You can do similar granular sounds with Cubase's Padshop ! (Tip) ♥️
Love to hear this applied to the vocals on “not in love” by 10 CC.

Thank you for making us discover this incredible plugin!!! 🤘🤘🤘👽
Awesome tool, well explained. Thank you Venustheory.
That white hair is the real star of the show 😂🤫
That is so much fun to play with. Try the dumpster patch from heavyocity damage, stretch that out, that's some real sci-fi horror.
Paulstretch is life.
This free vst is the closest thing I've heard that kinda does the same sounding effects as Portal by output. Very cool
amazing. thank you for the deep dive!
This is one seriously impressive and addictive tool! The one thing you didn't get into is: How do you stop processing every song and sound you can come up with?
Paulstretch plus Valhalla Supermassive, love to use it for drones.
paulstretch is so good for ambient tracks
Super cool vst! Didnt know something like this existed
Did Paul know what he was doing when he created this plugin this is extremely underrated this is almost too good to be free
Thank you VT!
Nearly forgot I had paulxstretch. It’s crazy fun!
great video man, very clear, thanks for making it , i appreciate you!
awesome video, cheers mate! a great free VST that i don't hear mentioned a lot is A1TriggerGate by Alex Hilton. i use it on nearly every project.
Thx! Very helpfull content. Great app, especialy on a phone with mic input.
Friggin' Awesome!
Fun fact: in audacity you can create the paulstretch effect as well!
All of the shitty entry level ambient music I did when I was starting out was just paulstretch lol

Glad you enjoyed it! Currently using a Rycote HC-22, previously used the Deity S Mic 2
thanks!
Thanks so much for all of the fantastic videos. Massive respect.
Very clear as always, thx Cameron !
Genius! Great tutorial!
Many thanks
i've used the original for years. love it. I have not tried the new version (yet) though
I took a bass sample (single note about 3 seconds long), and stretched it over a track (ambient) and it was insane.
Oh yeah you can make SO MUCH stuff with 1 small sample and a lot of creative automation... 😱😎
Thanks Cameron
Dredd was the best use of this ......... 3D, slow mo..... Paul Stretch... The perfect alchemy.
Yet another fabulous tutorial. Many thanks. I'm heading to the download now. Are any of the controls on this capable of MIDI Learn or LFO control? Be nice to be able to automate the playback over time.
So good to see fellow Bitwig user! Btw…coffee!!!
Finally, a good fucking PaulStretch guide.
Should try ppooll next 🤠
trying to get a feel for the workflow in ableton - are you putting paulxstretch at the end of a MIDI track after VST/effects, or printing audio and bringing it into paul stretch on a separate audio track? It´s a beautiful program!
Thanks for reminding me that I had this already, can't wait to fuck with some shit now
Super helpful, thanks a lot
Great hint to an interesting plug-in. Quick question: Is it possible to assign (e.g. in Bitwig) some of PaulStretch's sound changing parameters to controllers and adjust them in realtime using a MIDI controller?
Yes.
Some but not all parameters can be targeted! Hopefully in the future someone updates the plugin to add more functions for direct control!
Like when i render and try to bring the file from my desktop to logic it just says file empty??
same! his juat does it automaticaly
Mind boggling
Damn what's the Dune preset at the end there. Sounds beautiful !
Yo! One of my personal presets. Might work on a soundbank for Dune someday!
This is what the caretaker uses.
always loved the washed out sound of Paul stretch :)
Thanks for another Excellent tool.
One quintillion... that has gone past ridiculous and hit sublime.
what am i missing because i cannot get the captured audio to play back in my DAW(studio one)
How do you export the stretched sound after loading in a sample? I have it how I like, but I want to do it with each individual sound for mixing.
*VST3, not VST2 (referring to the video at 1:00). Sorry for nitpicking :)
Dang, really impressive plugin! Is it MIDI controllable? Maybe even be played via keyboard or similar pitch like MIDI?
Now this is something I HAVE to know.
Some but not all parameters can be controlled via MIDI! Hopefully someone in the future adds some additional functionality, we'll see!
Is it me or Paul x Stretch does not work on catalina with cubase 11?
Did they update the PaulXStretch vst recently? I got it when it first came out and I didn't think it sounded quite like the original paulstretch
