This weight is exciting. There is history between Micic and Desanto (watch if you haven not seen that match). Imagine Desanto beating Micic. Fix is my favorite of the bunch and I think he is going to win it at hte Ncaas.
The referee was too quick to make those two potentially dangerous calls. The BIG10 is only a few weeks away so they’ll be able to run it back. Nick needs to finish quickly next time around.
nah dude it was totally reasonable, like as a referee in wrestling your most important job is to make sure the wrestlers stay safe and he was doing his job, that knee definitely was in danger and better be safe than sorry ya know.
Not really. It’s a great weight class because it doesn’t go off the boil after the top 2-3 guys, but I don’t think there is a true stud in the weight class. By stud, I mean someone like Nickal or Nolf. There is not one single guy in that weight class that is both great attacking neutral and on top. I love the weight class because anyone can win, but pound for pound, not one of the 133 guys would make my top 10.
Brian Hays that’s what I’m saying. If your defense to a move is something that can hurt you, you’re using the wrong defense and you should be punished for it, not the guys who is 75% of his way through completing the takedown.
This is what makes or breaks a great wrestler I've been following Suriano since HS, and although hes lost his top tier matches he can still show up where it matters !!! Lets GO NJ!!!!!
Micic is such a world class powerhouse...and the level of skill most of his competition has ..and he still beats them...what a tactician...great weight-class for entertainment and dominant wrestlers also. Suriano was 159-0 with four high school state championships...look at 06:30 and right before the final period...looks like Micic is walking up to a salad bar for a snack. Conditioning.
That was clearly potentially dangerous. Can you not see the knee and ankle direction? As someone who’s wrestled D1 & suffered major injuries, this was the right call.
Wow...the way Micic has been wrestling, I didn't think it would be that close. Oh and why is Daton Fix ranked #2 while Phillipi is ranked #5; when Phillipi beat Fix?
Wow...I didn't know any of that. Had to look all of it up. I hate being left in the dark all because I don't have a Flo subscription. Anyway, Phillippi looked like a world beater when he wrestled Fix. I just assumed that he didn't lose another match after that. But he only has a couple losses. Getting majored by Suriano was huge, but losing to Myers was a bigger hit to his record. 133 is really an exciting weight class. Can't wait for Nationals.
Never against a top guy. At this level-top five in a weight class-all these guys are good in all positions relative to an average wrestler. However, it’s when they face each other, people find out their real strengths abs weaknesses. Suriano has not demonstrated that he’s great on the attack-this is actually the best match I’ve seen him wrestled, offensive wise, in college.
This is the best match I have seen from Suriano. I think it works to both of their advantage that the result was Micic winning. Nick will still be hungry and Stevan realizes there is no huge skill gap.
Suriano was the much better wrestler this match. I think his problem is that he’s not used to shooting that much on a top wrestler, hence why he allowed the takedown. But that’s okay, though. He allowed one takedown and could have had three or four of his own. I think he might be the best wrestler at that weight class. That’s quite a poor showing for Micic who got lucky a few stoppages. If he lets other top wrestlers continually get to his legs like this, he’ll lose.
If Nick can smooth out his rough edges, I think he could still be a favorite. He seems to control most of these big matches but he is falling short. For one, I think he needs to work on conditioning a little, but more than likely he is just cutting too much weight. Causing him to die out after a burst of offense or at the end of matches. This was most apparent against Austin. In this match, you really get a feel for it at the beginning of the 2nd. Here he seems he is just catching his wind for the first minute. He seems to be literally leaning on micic as a strategy to catch his breath. But again, I can't imagine a wrestler of this Caliber being out of shape. And it makes me think it is a weight cut issue. Which I hope isn't true. He is so talented, and cutting too much weight just takes all the fun out of it. For his sake, I hope this isn't the case. He also needs to have a couple solid go to moves. If he can do a couple things, he can start dictating the outcome a little better. He doesn't have much of a go-to offense, seems more reactionary. At 1:20, even with his offense.... he gets in on the shot, and then he seems lost. You get a full 8 count of him just hanging on. No movement on either side. He doesn't move (react ) until micic tries to switch out of it. So.. again , even with his offense, he is reactionary vs being the aggressor. And with his reactionary style he ends up positive often based on his strength alone. And I think that is illustrated at the end of the match here. You can see he kind of just changes levels without much of an idea of what to do. Like he is a bit lost. If you look st the PSU "row" they all have several go to moves that they are confident in, and they would all be able to st least put in a couple solid attempts at the end of a match. And they would have enough gas left to do so. Nick just needs to do a few things to start coming out on top here. Conditioning (which may be out of his control if he is cutting more than 10 lbs. off of his lowest natural weight) and a little technical work would help him finish those two shots, that were called off, much quicker. The technical work would put him in a better, more offensive position, and conditioning would help him drive through it. And keep your head in the match. Don't worry about the refs, control what you can control. Anyhow... just my two cents.
I am in no place to coach suriano, but i think often times he doesnt lower his level well enough on a lot of his shots that first hi-c probably wouldve been a takedown bc he couldve drove right through him
After seeing all the top wrestlers at this weight, I personally think that DeSanto looks better than the rest and is going to come out as the national champion. Unless of course he does something stupid and gets himself disqualified.
I think DeSanto gets a huge boost grappling with studs around his weight class in Lee and past Hawkeye wrestlers like Gilman and Clark. His coaches, the Brands brothers, also were big winners at the lower weights.
