Am I seeing this correctly? The port where we can pour the lube is just over the port where it comes out? Doesnt it mean that we could theoretically press some wax instead of lube to have a precisely waxed chain.
Does that make sense?

Yes, you see correctly, but maybe you've missed the working principle of the system. Two nozzles in the bottom are releasing the specific amount of oil (a fraction of a drop, manually regulated by valve) only to the object in contact with nozzles. This contact is accomplished only by chain rollers, since it is the highest point of the chain. The extraction of lubricant from the nozzle is accomplished by gravity and shear kinetics similar to Venturi. I don't know what you mean by wax. If you refer to "wax" as a solid or high viscosity matter, it wouldn't work. Lubricants such as a simple oil for fine mechanic, or waxed oil, or other special lubricant for bike chain, should be fine, as long as it doesn't exceed the viscosity of a Liquid Yoghurt.
