Cut the tube at a 45 degree angle and cut the hole very small. Put the tube at the angle of the cut and caulk down the trim and wall. If gap is too wide on trim cut a bit more off the tube. If you do this you barely have to wipe it and it won't be too heavy and smear everywhere. I'm a painter and have done it this way for 30 years.
In case you will be painting on or around caulk, petroleum jelly is not a good idea, it will ruin your paint work, instead, use a spray soap or foam glass cleaner. Spray right over the caulk and your fingers will not pick up, but smooth the caulk. The residue will not hurt your paint work...
Not only that….he isn’t a professional…a professional will push the tube away to make a clean line, not pull it towards yourself. This is the worst caulking video I’ve ever seen!

Why use your finger, craftsman? Everything should be done completely differently: after applying silicone, a soap solution is applied as a spray, then the seam is passed with an angular rubber patel.

You should always push the nozzle along the joint, not pull it. Just dip your finger in water with fairy liquid to smooth off silicone bead.
