Jay Bates , excellent video Jay. I know you have to love having someone shoot the video while you worked. I do update videos for my kids (grown kids) so they can keep up with what we are working on in the shop... moving the camera for different shots is a time killer. Great job on the music... adding music gets me too.
Hotrod, I created a separate channel for the shop videos because I initially thought I would have a bunch of videos of my granddaughter on this channel and didn't think my kids would want to wade through all that. As it turns out, I don't shoot many videos of my grand daughter, but I get plenty of pictures.
These are really nice Jay. The time and precision that you do with not only these shakers but everything you do is just a pleasure to watch. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
A Jay classic. For those of us who have been with you long enough, we know this is S&P vid #3. If you made a Jay Bates trivia game, I'd be sitting pretty high lol! Seriously, nice work. Since you've upped your hand tool game, these are definitely the best yet!
Great project Jay. I made 4 sets of salt and pepper shakers as described in Maple, Walnut and Cherry. I then did 4 more sets scaled to 1.5" x 1.5" x 3.5" also in Walnut, cherry and Curly Maple. Finish all with organic walnut oil. If I could add a picture I would. Thanks for the channel.
Liked some of the shots. Others had too much axis movement and felt like I was in a helicopter again instead of watching a woodworking video. Nice looking gifts.
I was thinking that this was a cool look to your video up until about 3:27 when I started to become nauseous from motion sickness. The moving camera gives another dimension to your videos but too much movement is , well for me, too much. Loved the shakers, great idea and well done.
I really like these Jay!! I have been looking at a Lathe because I have wanted to do some shakers but this had given me new ideas. I may do a video on my channel soon with something similar. Thanks for all you inspiration Brother and as always , Keep it real!!
Sean Foushee Blade Runner’s city shots were filmed with multiple exposures using precise tracking on multiple objects...I’m sure Jay could come up with a low-key way to repeat a few shots :)
Really awesome!!!!! This is a great idea for gifts. What stood out most to me was that you already have a bin for corks. How often do you use them that you have a dedicated spot for them.
The shots of your table saw aimed toward the garage door remind me of my first shop, a 10x10 mudroom. Had to open the door if I wanted to rip something longer than 4 feet long.
Fun project, fun video. I like it! 👍 but out of curiosity and off topic (sorry), what is making the flags on the wall move in the wind? Do you have some major type ventilation system going on up there?
hi Jay, another good video. dunno if this is too personal but I want to make the transition into full time furniture maker. I have my shop which I have slowly built over several years. I wanted to know more about your business, not including anything you make from RUclips or any sort of merchandise etc. Just projects for clients. for example, do you advertise, if so where? if not, how do you attract customers, how do you figure out how much to charge etc stuff like that. love your channels stole loads of ideas thanks.
Great work and very cool video edit! 👍I often skip some moments in most videos, with video no skip during all six minutes. 😁 Question: did you put the oil inside the shakers? Or applied it only outside?
Just to the outside to keep them cleaner longer. Fingers will get the outside dirty. The inside will never be dirty because you're only putting clean salt and pepper in them. And the wood is non toxic so no need to worry about the contents becoming harmful.
Based on all of your other tools I'm surprised you have the dewalt planer and that you haven't moved up to something with a spiral cutter head - Just curious if you think it doesn't make much difference, or if the one you've got is good'nuff. (Looking at making an upgrade, myself)
Your video production is always just as good if not better than the projects you make. This video is a neat new flavor that works well with a project that doesn't necessitate narration. Great work Jay and camera man (Shawn?) and keep up the great work.
I made my Grandma almost the exact same thing, except I turned the blank into round. So, I guess it was almost the same thing until it took a drastic turn.
Good idea about the salt and pepper shakers. Sorry Jay with the gimbal and the music ,it looked more artsy than your usual vids , and the motion sickness kicked in about half way through. It's good to see you trying something different
Just curious--why not drill the shaker holes in the tops prior to attaching them, that way you don't have to mess with cleaning out the saw dust from inside them through the small cork hole? You could drill the shaker holes through blocks and then cut the blocks down to create multiple identical tops, which would be faster and more consistent than cutting all the tops and then drilling all the hole separately in each one. Unless the variability is a feature you are wanting to include.
Just curious, what's your reasoning for using the tablesaw to cut those pieces to length instead of the compound miter saw? I see a lot of youtube woodworkers doing that, but have never heard a good reason.
Hullo young man, Smashing wee video of the project and your workshop but, no more of that music please. People will say just turn the sound down but I was a bit wary of that in case you said something. Oh and could you ask the camera person to stand still. I thank you good sir.

Job well done! The project, filming, Gimbal testing and editing all made for an entertaining and informative video. Thanks for sharing.

Scott where are your videos of your shop?

Thanks Jay. I really enjoy how artistic you are with the direction. Thanks for not bombarding us with self promotion. Classy!
Hi Jay, You've got one of the best woodshop footprint I saw on the internet! Always a joy to whatch you videos! Thank's for sharing!
I dig the style mix-ups. Gives a freshness and this was very enjoyable. Thanks Jay.
Looked like a fun video to shoot . Shakers turned out nicely
Thanks Jay. Simple easy project ideal. I made a half dozen set this evening and they turned out great.
A Jay classic. For those of us who have been with you long enough, we know this is S&P vid #3. If you made a Jay Bates trivia game, I'd be sitting pretty high lol! Seriously, nice work. Since you've upped your hand tool game, these are definitely the best yet!
I like the agreement that you have sought with wood, simple and useful work.
I made these from a video you posted a while back and it's still one of my favorite projects. Thanks for all you do.
Jay bates version of quick and dirty video....classy.... well done sir!
This video looks ready to air on This Old House. Nice project and great camera work
Excellent product placement for the Lubricant/Laxative!
Dig this build. Simple and straightforward. I actually like the music and flow a lot.
It's nice when you change up a video style from time to time...this one was great.
I’ve been away awhile. It’s good to be back.
One of the best woodworktainment vid I've ever seen. :) great stuff
Jay, the videos you produce like this are my favorite. More please ... and very nice project.
I am digging the camera angles and really enjoyed watching the video for entertainment! Always enjoy your channel!👍
Wow!!! Very beautiful look
Nice video! I enjoy your usually verbal explanation but this was a neat change just watching. A+
Liked some of the shots. Others had too much axis movement and felt like I was in a helicopter again instead of watching a woodworking video.
Nice looking gifts.
Your video quality and production always amazes me Jay! Keep it up.
Waauuu... I loved the way you filmed this project...Good initiative Jay
Congrats on making PopWood’s list of favorite videos.
What list?
Go to Popular Woodworking channel. PopWood’s weekly favorite video list.
Thanks!
Nice video Jay! It’s fun to see the entire project and your workflow from beginning to end, with all of that creative video work.
Keep it up!
I was thinking that this was a cool look to your video up until about 3:27 when I started to become nauseous from motion sickness. The moving camera gives another dimension to your videos but too much movement is , well for me, too much. Loved the shakers, great idea and well done.
Thanks for the feedback.
i did like your new tripod too (is it the new Stone model?!) but i do like more your standard style, this was great like a special treat though.
I like the new video style.
I really like these Jay!! I have been looking at a Lathe because I have wanted to do some shakers but this had given me new ideas. I may do a video on my channel soon with something similar. Thanks for all you inspiration Brother and as always , Keep it real!!
Sensual.
Deja vu 2015! Same shakers, new apron. Nice project👍🏻
Loved the fluid nature of the gimbal shots, but I imagine those camera moves would make it difficult for your doppelgänger to make an appearance.
Indeed.
I was wondering if the Doppel ganger was operating the camera
Sean Foushee Blade Runner’s city shots were filmed with multiple exposures using precise tracking on multiple objects...I’m sure Jay could come up with a low-key way to repeat a few shots :)
Excellent video and project! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
Finally, a good video where you do not dump
Those are great, outstanding word
Really awesome!!!!! This is a great idea for gifts. What stood out most to me was that you already have a bin for corks. How often do you use them that you have a dedicated spot for them.
I don't use them often. I made a bunch of boxes for various items.
Nice dynamic look to the video! First one I’ve noticed where you had a camera operator.
The shots of your table saw aimed toward the garage door remind me of my first shop, a 10x10 mudroom. Had to open the door if I wanted to rip something longer than 4 feet long.
Great project!
Very well done, Jay! You just provided me the video for the perfect Christmas gifts. Think I’ll use Mahogany and Pecan.
That maple looks beautiful, set off with the darker wood: Good choice.
Does look really cool I wonder if they were turned if they would look any better
lol that's what I just posted above great minds think alike plus I love working on my lathe a little.
I, for one, welcome your new camera operator.
great video as always but not sure about the music, ended up muting it
Love the project, beautiful workmanship as always. One nit to pick though. Pepper always gets the single hole and salt the multiple holes. :-)
Love this new style of video
Very Nice Jay, I might try making a few for my local makers market.
Loved the new shots! But there was maybe just a little too much movement for me. Excellent video nontheless Jay!!
Great video
Nice job Jay. Is that a Ron Paulk bench build? I have the plans not built it yet but it looks the business.
they turned out great, one thing missing from this video, a 70's mustachio
really nice Jay you gave me an idea you ever make them then turn the od into a neat design. I think I will try that one.
Well played my brother! Very nice👍🇺🇸
Lol, the music just made me laugh. Great video!
Shop envy. Great job 👍
Great video. Got me dizzy with all the camera angles/views.
Fun project, fun video. I like it! 👍 but out of curiosity and off topic (sorry), what is making the flags on the wall move in the wind? Do you have some major type ventilation system going on up there?
I like that Bench Mat! Where do you get something like that?

good vibes, i dig the style
Salt and pepper grinders next?
Nice to look at!
my next project! thx!

Nice vid Jay! Although I was sure Starsky and Hutch would make an appearance 😉
the angles and shots they got with that lens and gimbal are so solid also is this shot in 24fps? it looks so good
This was shot on the a6500 with the 10-18 lens in 4k at 24fps.
love this style

Jeremy
My wife heard the music and asked what exactly I was watching down here. ;)
Did you take the opportunity to reply with "someone working wood" ?
Damn!
no.
Choice of backing track, aside, I thought this was well done.
Starsky & Hutch wood works...Oh, that don't sound right either..
Nice videography in this one
Awesome stuff!
I hope there were at least a couple "Stick a cork in it!" jokes tossed around during the making of this video.
Really cool Jay! 👍👊
I made my Grandma almost the exact same thing, except I turned the blank into round. So, I guess it was almost the same thing until it took a drastic turn.
hahahhaahaha
thank you good stuff
What wood did you use to ensure that they were food safe?
Funky! 😎
Very nice thank you Jay
@Jay Bates. What finish continue on these.and are they washable
Good idea about the salt and pepper shakers. Sorry Jay with the gimbal and the music ,it looked more artsy than your usual vids , and the motion sickness kicked in about half way through. It's good to see you trying something different
This year turn shakers on lathe!
I like how it was filmed. Your friend did a great job! That maple is just awesome too!
Verry Nice😀
Dust collection changed again?
Hello,
Your work apron is great. Where did you buy it?
Thank you!
His apron has its own page on his website.

I don't know how to handle this song without sexy clone making an appearance...
I love You!

6 one way, half a dozen the other. You can drill them before. It's easier to center the holes after the tops are flush with the sides.
It's not a proper shaker set until it's been liberally coated in lubricant laxative :P
I can only imagine the comments if these were turned on a lathe...
They look great. Seems you were debating on the lathe. I would have preferred a rounded shape, but some may prefer the current design which works too.
It would have been more "ergonomic"
**snickers**
Hello ...very god job
Please continous
Just curious, what's your reasoning for using the tablesaw to cut those pieces to length instead of the compound miter saw? I see a lot of youtube woodworkers doing that, but have never heard a good reason.
Smaller pieces are more easy to manage at the table saw.
officially the best music on any woodworking channel. Whats that track on the opening?
Hey Jay about how long did these take you to make? It's hard to judge from the 6 minute video! Thanks!
A couple hours.
Hullo young man, Smashing wee video of the project and your workshop but, no more of that music please. People will say just turn the sound down but I was a bit wary of that in case you said something. Oh and could you ask the camera person to stand still. I thank you good sir.
Muted the music...played Push-it by Salt-N-Pepa during this video. Only seemed right.
hahhahaha
Tasty
Salt and Pepper shakers Part Deux ?
Отличная у тебя мастерская! Вери гут!
