  • This is my Dell XPS M1530 which had a bad graphic card, there was no video when i turned it on and you can see now its working, use any kind of torch which gives you a blue flame like the one i used.

    My M1530 failed the first time today... I was shocked that my lovely and faithful laptop dies after about 10 YEARS!!! I knew this is something in relation to the GPU. Just took my hair dryer and heated the GPU for 5 minutes. This 1st resuscitation was succesful. I hope it will serve for another 10 years! (4GB RAM, SSD)

    Thanks man this worked out just great!!
    I called Dell customer service, they wanted to change the motherboard and give me a new grafic card.
    You just saved me a couple thousand buck....

    I love it! Be careful with the plastic around the fan plug-in; it melts easily. And, also screw-in for video card tends to desolder, but can be expoxied back. My inexperience caused the mistakes. But, most importantly; it worked!!!

    My sister's Dell XPS M1530 was broken just this way. Searching for help on the internet, I found this video and tried the method myself. I used a cheap (~ 5 USD) pen torch. First attempt was unsuccessful, but I tried it again and voilá - screen comes on and laptop boots as before! I would also recommend adding some fresh thermal grease to all the chips under the large heat sink. Thanks for posting!

    Much thanks, Kheder! I have two of these m1530s and one just got saved from an early scrapping thanks to your brillliant video!!!
    Initially thought I had a bad inverter or screen, but after I swapped my good oen in, still no go, so I tried your pencil torch technique on the Nvidia GPU and it has bounced back to life... It's in a "burn-in" test right now... will update on future status to see if it holds up.... thx again for the informative info brother!

    Wanted to thank you for this video, I was in the process of discarding my Dell xps, 1530, and decided to do a quick check on RUclips; came across your video displaying the same issue I was having. I duplicated the same process, and Voila! my Dell was alive.
    Thanks!

    (continued)
    I had to pry the fan/heat sink off and scrape off the old thermal paste. I also cleaned out the motherboard by blowing air on it. After doing the heating I very carefully applied a thin layer of thermal paste to two of the chips using my finger wrapped in cellaphane. The third chip had some other kind of coating (spongish) which I left alone. Make sure you plug the fan back in before closing up.
    Thanks again Kheder.

  • @SGL1963

    This really does work.... It works because the heating remelts the solder on the joints surrounding the video processor 'chip' and its directly associated components. Remelting the solder gets rid of dry joints which are very resistive and makes them conductive again. There is no need to apply heat directly to the 'chip' as this will damage it! Great video and once again.... it does work!!

    I'm gonna try this, I have a dell xps m1330....funny thing is I've had that torch long ago and gave it away but now have a bernzomatic which acts as a torch also . I'm just a bit nervous to try this as I don't wanna burn it up too bad..lol But your video is incredible. I think I may film my attempt to do this as ive never even taken a computer apart before.....I'll keep u posted on how this comes out!

    Hi Kheder, I was amazed at your way of dealing with the failed graphic card., My M1530 graphic chip has just failed to respond with an on-screen display. I have purchased a torch pen and some thermal paste to coat the graphic's chip, and when the butane fuel get's delivered I hope to be able to join you in the successful repairs corner. I will tell you how I got on Kheder. In the meantime thank you

    Yes I agree with you thermal paste is very good for the connection between the chip and cooler, actually I would have used it if I had it that time, but I was in hurry and didn't have thermal paste so I didn't.
    I haven't tried the heat gun, but yes I think it's a good way to fix this issue of graphic card too. Thanks for your comment.

  • @sumoqy
    @sumoqy  12 лет назад

    @ Twinklethomas1
    I think the over heating causes this graphic card problem. The problem is you can't change the graphic card because it's built in the motherboard, in my case I wont buy a new motherboard for my 2 years old dell.

  • @FlyingSolo77
    @FlyingSolo77 11 лет назад +1

    I tried this on my son's computer and it now works. For how long who knows but thank you Kheder for saving me the cost of a new (gaming) laptop!
    The only problem I had was buying a pencil torch that worked. The cheap one I got for Harbor Freight was no good (read the reviews on the site). I got a slightly more expensive one from Home Depot. You also need to by the Butane to fill the pencil torch. I also bough some thermal past (cheapest one) from Frye's.
    (to be continued)

  • @eagles1643
    @eagles1643 11 лет назад

    @wiwbiz2
    Well cooling system doesn't solve the problem actually, because the over heating disconnects the GPU from the motherboard, and heating it again by the torch connects it again to the motherboard.

    @Twinklethomas1
    Well the secret behind this is the heating that makes the graphic chip disconnected from the motherboard and heating the chip again this way or any other way (heat gun or hair dryer) reconnects the graphic card with the motherboard.
    I took gave my computer to service shop when i first had this problem and they said it needs a new motherboard. What the hell!! it would cost me about 200 $ or more. So i fixed it myself in this way :-)

    After heating you must put a thick heat pad in so it forces the warm graphics chip to keep down.

    You got to get it around 1500F to 2000F degrees. If you dont have something to get it that hot then it wont melt back together. The one he using is rated at 2000F top.

  • @bktennisman
    @bktennisman 8 лет назад

    not sure i would use a blow torch. I'm fine with heating an old laptop to hopefully prolong life, but would probably use a heat gun. blow torch sprays chemicals onto system and may do harm in my mind to keeping the processor cool. note that if u do a reflow, i would recommend cleaning the contact point of processors and heatsink to remove old thermal paste (one forum said use isotopic alcohol and qtip). then add new thermal paste to processors (search how to do this). doing this will ensure the processors stay cool

  • @sumoqy

    The thermal paste gets hard after you work with your computer and it needs to be changed whenever you remove the cooling system over the processor and graphic chip.

  • @liudas000

    there is an easier way - just release the heat-sink from nVidia chip, press power button, wait about 1min, press and hold power button again until it power off. Repeat this until it starts and don't put on the heat-sink until it loads fully - if you will put back the heat-sink too early - it will give you system error. WARNING do not release the heat-pipe on the CPU and Bridge!

    check your video cable - if its fine - probably will be display - white means that crystals don't work at all. Why they don't work I'm not sure, because it can be GPU, cable or LCD chip, which control the matrix.

  • @liudas000
    @liudas000 12 лет назад

    well - you heat it up more than up to working temperature, so you have longer effect, I dont have how to heat it up, so I use just internal temperature, generated by the chip itself without cooling, so my case it works up to 10 days, but its good in my case, when you have nothing but you need to boot up here and now without caring how long it will work :)

  • @GoodGeeks
    @GoodGeeks 12 лет назад

    i like your method, but you could of used a heat gun and replaced the thermal paste
    i do that all the time and a heat gun will do less damage to the surface
    and replacing the thermal paste will help the chip stay much cooler

  • @eagles1643
    @eagles1643 11 лет назад

    Yes the torch will heat it enough to make it work if the problem is in the GPU

    sometimes for me it start to work after 10th or 20th attempt. Its very temporary but you can put it back to life this way unlimited times. Another way is to put it to oven for about 5min at 200C but I didn't tried this method yet.

    Had my m1530 for at least 5 years and the screen went blank today, just loosened the 2 screws over the GPU, switched on for 30s, smelt slight burning, switched off, switched on again and the screen is working again! Quickly switched off and re-tightened screws. Laptop has booted first time afterwards. How long this will last, is anyone's guess, but great tips.

    It is a temporary solution. Few days later again starting same problem. If do you want a real solution theb you should take off the gpu and clean old fcking cheap solder. You should reball again with quality ball solders, correct heating and correct time holding the heat. This is need reball machine and professional experience.
