Simple and Easy way to transfer photo from inkjet printer

  • A little explaining
    First take a transparency (OHP) sheet and roughen the surface with a 100 grit sand paper in Vertical horizontal and diagonal directions. THIS IS TO ENSURE THAT THE PRINTER INK DOESN'T SMEAR AND FORM DROPLETS LIKE IT WOULD ON A REGULAR SMOOTH OHP.
    You can polish this rough side with a very little Vaseline (too much will spoil the printer and the printout) using a cotton cloth so that the ink comes off easily into wood.
    Use normal inkjet printer with dye (water) based ink to take print on the rough side.
    The printout should be in LEAST RESOLUTION (draft mode) as more ink will cause droplets on the print and spoil the detailing.
    Prepare the wood by sanding it first and then apply some Fabric glue. Normal glue has too much water and will cause the transfer to smudge and smear.
    If using normal PVA glue like fevicol make sure to let it dry for a while before placing the Printed side onto it.

    I’ve watched multiple methods and think this method is brilliant! You can actually see where it goes and to add print on top of print for depth of color, awesome!

    So I finally tried this. I used PVA glue on the wood. I didn’t sand the OHP sheet as one side was already textured. Worked pretty well.

    Video is great about transferring photos to wood. Obviously (to me anyway), this video is not intended to show you how to use photoshop. Just as it doesn't show you how to use a mouse or how to use a PC or how to use a printer, or a camera or any other way to prepare an image. Personally, had it included full details of how to edit an image - in a printing video - I would have skipped it onward. This is a great concise video of the method to print onto wood.

      @@Cutart Since there are so many programs that could be used to produce a photo you probably could have left the Photoshop step out altogether. It just seems to confuse people. People who know how to do it don't need it and people who don't know how to do it can't learn from this tutorial on printing, so I would just focus on the printing aspect. Thanks for the video. I'm going to give the dry method a try.

    Amazing project! The only issue is that no matter how residual, that very thin layer of Vaseline will start to accumulate on the printer rollers and ink heads. I can't imagine that after time your rollers, or inkjets, will survive well. Dust will stick to that stuff inside the printer. I'm going to try this but with a $10 used printer off Craigslist.

    • @Cutart
      @Cutart  3 года назад +3

      You are using too much adhesive. Try not using any adhesive, just rub a wet cloth on the wood, to make it "moist" not wet. And transfer without shaking the sheet. Or if you are using adhesive, let it dry out a bit before transferring. The excess water causes the prints to smear. Less is best.

    Use the "Contrast" adjustment before you print to make the image bolder. Also, if you let the glue dry a little longer it will absorb more of the ink. And would vellum work? It has a slight texture so you shouldn't have to sand.

    • @Cutart
      @Cutart  6 лет назад

      +Gary Myers Hi!! Those are good inputs. Will definitely try. Vellum is something I haven't come across. If it absorbs ink then won't work. Has to be plastic as that would keep the pigment loose on the surface.

    I love your video. I am very calculated and exacting like you were but what did I do wrong? I followed it to a T, hundred grit sandpaper every direction both the transparent film and the wood, which is already a pre-made craft wood very flat Vaseline, but not too much And it printed fine, but it wasn’t very dark at all and it’s brand new ink and a very good printer and then when it transferred it was pretty smudged. I don’t know if I maybe went a little overboard with pressure as I was transferring it once I saw it was ruined. I quickly wash both and after sanding, I can give it another run, but do you have any ideas? Could it be too little fabric glue too much fabric glue type of fabric glue, the vasoline?

    • @Cutart
      @Cutart  Месяц назад

      Don't use Vaseline. And wait for the ink to dry a bit before transfering. The wood need to be just slightly moist and not really wet for a good transfer.

    • @Cutart
      @Cutart  5 лет назад

      The fabric glue is a lot more dense has lot less water. You can use PVA glue but have to wait for it to dry a bit before placing the Print to avoid smearing of the print. You can simply dampen the wood also. By wiping it with a wet cloth instead of using any glue. Any excess water will smear the print.

      +Amanda Henderson hi!! No that would not work as printer throws small droplets of color ink on paper to create an image. As the drops are put on a smooth plastic sheet they just merge and roll around spoiling the image. Rubbing sanding the sheet creates a lot of small valleys that hold those tiny drops in place preventing smearing and merging of drops of ink.

    Thanks.

    • @Cutart
      @Cutart  6 лет назад +1

      +DMKA100 No you don't have to use Vaseline every time.. just once. It helps ink come off much faster and easily into the wood. Also prevents the Plastic sheet from sticking to the wood.

    hi, after the surface dries up, how smooth is the finish?
    do i need to sand it down further?
    can i apply a coat of poly urethane or lacquer spray on top of it to prevent it from spoiling further?
    thanks

    • @Cutart
      @Cutart  6 лет назад

      +R Thomas hello, no you do not have to sand it.. it's really smooth just as much as the wood itself. It will not spoil for a long time... Still if you wish you can apply a clear coat if you like..

      Cutart tried this method, but in the first attempt the image got smudged (probably too much fevicol). In the second attempt it did not transfer properly😢. I had used fevicol SH, could that have created the problem?

    • @Cutart
      @Cutart  6 лет назад

      +R Thomas sir did you use the Fevicol Shoe Fix?? That won't work as it's synthetic. You need to use Fevicol fabric glue. It has the right viscosity and adhesion for the purpose and is water based. Also try transfering the image on a thick paper sheet dampened (just moistened) with a wet cloth..

    • @thomasajita
      @thomasajita 6 лет назад

      Cutart I used fevicol SH used for wood joining. I'll try with fevicol fabric glue

    Can you use a gel medium like modge podge brand, instead of fabric glue?

    • @Cutart
      @Cutart  6 лет назад

      +Katie Dunlap We here in India don't get modpodge. So haven't tried it and made this video as an alternative to modpodge. But you need a water based medium to transfer water soluble ink used in inkjet printers. Modpodge is used for laser printer and sublimation Ink printers that are not water soluble.

      +Kurnia Saputra yes you can. Has to be high viscosity. Too much water in glue will spoil the print.

      Yes regular Elmer’s. Most dont know that modge podge is just glue with water but thats for like gluing napkins. But regular old fashioned glue, not the newer tops of washable kids glue that they sell on back to school sales.

    can i use laminating pouches the same way? in not whats the difference between Transparency OHP and laminating pouches?

    • @Cutart
      @Cutart  4 года назад

      Lamination pouches have to be sturdy and thick enough to tolerate the sanding. Also should be soft enough for the printer to be able to bend while passing through the roller. I haven't tried them.
