The Porter's Gate - Wake Up Jesus

- In July of 2020, The Porter's Gate Worship Project quarantined a small group of musicians at a farmhouse in rural Virginia to write and record new worship songs around the themes of justice and lament. The result is two albums "Justice Songs" and "Lament Songs."
This song is based on the story in Mark 4 when Jesus is with His disciples, asleep on the boat.

God the Father spoke to me. I was sitting on my friends covered porch in the Texas heat smoking cigars. Right by me a storm blew in. Thunder crashed as rain fell. I cheered it on then it all stopped and I said aloud "Thank you Father" and HE responded "I thought you'd like that". HE knew I'd like it but said "I thought". So humble. Miss you DEAR FATHER!
We are the ones that are sleeping
I suffer from bad depression and anxiety. At times, when it gets too much I meditate on the Psalms. The honest cries of people in situations that can be too much. Nothing changes, yet everything changes. The anxiety is still there. The depression is still there. But so is Jesus. This song reminds me of those times. My mind cries out to God, my soul sleeps in peace with my savior. Thank you so much for putting into words the love of God.

Been really going through the fire lately and it hasn't been easy just lost my last hunting dog and buddy of 17 yrs last week. Thank God for mom sending me this song and musicians willing to play this beautiful music! May all praise be to God!!! Where would we be without the Master!!!
Resonates so much with me looking at the state of all our countries and people. At the same time, reminded us of the nuance - that Jesus wanted the disciples to be confident in His power, and so, fearless, even in the raging sea, even when it looked like he was asleep...
This brought me to tears❣The hearts cry of so many who feel unheard,unseen and unloved.Thankful we have a Savior who never sleeps.

Lovely music and sweet voices... I'm so sorry that your Jesus is asleep. The Jesus that saved me is alive, awake and saving lives. Perhaps the sentiment should be more like "PEOPLE, when are you going to wake up, realize and confess that you need to let Jesus into your heart"
I had exactly that reflex when I heard the first few notes of the song, and then realized that they were referencing actual scripture. So what did that mean when Jesus was sleeping through the storm? Was he waiting for people to cry out? Or did he know it was going to be fine and wanted to catch a little rest? Either way, every time I hear this song I think about pre-judging someone's flawed theology, and then realizing it is pulled directly from the gospel and my view was just to narrow to see the full character of God.

Thank you for continuing to make such beautiful and theologically rich music. Mark is by far my favorite Gospel. Not only is it short, but it is vivid and it's themes written towards a suffering audience. Even though this song revolves around the calming of the storm in Mark 4, I am brought back to Mark 1 in which the Leper says to Jesus, "If you wish, you can make me clean." and Jesus, moved with pity, responds "I do will it. Be made clean."

I love this commentary on Mark 4, & while we usually focus on the courage of Peter (Matthew 14) to get out of the boat & other connected retellings. It's worth remembering the other disciples were frightened humans. We can't *all* be Peter *all* of the time.

Good tune but the theology is off, Jesus does not sleep nor does He slumber...He is seated enthroned at the right hand of the Father ever interceding on our behalf (Roman's 8) vs.34 states it emphatically.
We who claim to be believers in Jesus Christ must humble ourselves pray, study His word, and submit ourselves before His sovereign reign as Jesus deminstrated while He walked among humanity. 2 Chronicles 7:13-15 is a promise by God Almighty that will never change.

23 Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord?
Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever!
24 Why do you hide your face?
Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?

I agree that the Psalmist isn't saying something about God (that he's literally asleep). Rather the Psalmist, like these singers, are crying out to God and Jesus to act.

Here's the Scripture reference of the song from Mark 4: 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
