I freakin' loved playing this game for hours on end! I used to love shooting the follow/fire back enemies until they were all small. Then corralling them up and try to blast them all in a row.
I've still got my Vectrex. I got it in 1982 when i was 12 and my kids play with it now :) I reckon, i got the worlds highest score on Minestorm. I once scored over 900,000 LOL
Looks like the whole machine was worth the price of admission just for that pack-in game. I remember seeing ads for those back when I was 11 or 12 and wanting to play one SOOOOOO bad. Of course, I was never even lucky enough to find a demo model in a department store I could try. Gonna have to track down a used one sometime soon. =)
Me and my buddy ran away from home, just to visit a guy that had a Vectrex. I wasn't more then 3-4 years old at that time. He lived in a house not that far from where I lived, the problem was that it was over the road, and as a little kid. I was not allowed to walk over the road when mom wasn't with me. But yeah, there my gamingdevil was fed. When I later on turned 7, I got my NES as a birthdaypresent. That NES I still got, fully functional, and it still looks like brand new out of the box. It became 31 years old this year. So yeah, I am proud of that I kept it for so long. Because all of my mates that got their NES have sold them, and later on bought other ones, worse shape then theirs when they sold them. But mine, TOTALLY one owner piece of marvel!
When i was about 8-9, i played a lot with Vectrex. Mine Mine Storm record was about more than 100 level finished after 3.5 hour playing.. :) Greetings from Hungary.
I've been playing this game for over 20-something years. Unfortunately, there is no Mine Field 14. If you're able to get past MF 13, you'll skip to MF 15 and must shoot dots and other mines. Sometimes, the game might end after MF 13. Afterward, more weird-shaped and dotted mines, extra lives and more Mine Field skipping. The score will go crazy if you go over a million points. My brother and I were able to make it in the early 30s Mine Fields. Fun times.
You know, i find this pretty impressive even today. I mean let alone back then, this surely must have turned some heads. i sadly never played this back in the day. Then again ive though im old, im not old enough haha, 1984 :P born to late.
I had the opportunity to play mine storm today at the gamescom where a retro-game-booth had a vectrex. Actually, it looks pretty cool with the sharp lines and neon-afterglow (in real life better than in videos). A shame that the vector technique didn't win over the pixel... just imagine the games we would have today if this would have been the way all vendors chose!
well glad to know you finally learned how to comment. congratulations on your first comment ever i guess. FYI next time you don't have to number your comments. that could get confusing getting into the 100's now wouldn't it? this game is not bad though i guess. man i spend too much time on this comment to a troll.
If you listen to the Jay Miner talk on RUclips from cge 2014, he mentions that the vectrex originally was Battery powered by design. Also, there were a few Vectrex Mini arcade cabs made for bars and restaurants. There's was less than 10 made, and there's one on eBay for sale right now. For a meager $3800.
I just finished playing Armor..Attack on my Vectrex. Unfortuatly, out of the... 14(?) games I have for it, I only have the overlay for three. (Minestorm, Armor..Attack, Berzerk). I love the Vectrex.
Seriously now I've been a gamer since 1998 and played my first games on a Terminator, NES clone, on a black and white cathode TV screen, so that's pretty old school and the most cool thing about the Terminator is that it wasn't region coded or the cartridges weren't because I played US and Japanese games like Kage( still have them).
VECTREX RULES!!! Hey mark there is a turbo fire accesorie for the vectrex and a controller built for hyper chase (which is like a paddle) as well. the light pen has four related games and the giant 3d glasses (3d imager) has three games realesed, they had color without an overlay. I hope this info is helpfull altough they are not very afortable, non of them.

I like that you don't drift that much when you thrust. That makes it much more fun that Asteroids in my opinion. You're not so bound to the center in this game.
you know Adobe Illustrator used vecotr graphics too. great for resizing because you don't lose quality when you zoom way in or out or when you blow images up to larger sizes
Vetrex has a blue light neon graphics? That would be cool if there was a remake of vetrex, but a controller where you connect to a tv(those cheapo controllers with 10 video games or something you find in the handheld section in walmart or something.) And add new colors to it. Like neon green, red, and pink. Besides the plain blue color. That would be cool. It will be like Geometry Wars graphics. I can just imagine it now...
@@themagicboy6548 i know this post is ancient but my vectrex would crash at 13 also, but only sometimes! so my brother and I would try over and over until it didn't crash. It would also crash randomly on higher levels but not as often as 13 did. I have read that if you have no bullets flying across the screen as the level ends, it won't crash. Haven't tested this theory.
This is just as good as Asteroids. Homebrew maker John Dondizila made a dead-on Asteroids clone called Rockaroids and Rockaroids Remix (1996). It costs only $10 on his website. (classicgamingcreations)
Did you know that there is a glitch that makes it so that you cannot get past level 13? Anyone that wrote a complaint letter like "argh wyh wai cnt i get past lvl 13 bro?" Would get a free copy of Mine Storm 2. (Which is actually just a fixed version of MineStorm) Very few people ever did, so this makes MineStorm 2 probably the most rare game for the Vectrex
Yes if they make ports for the PS3 or 360 Vectrex games they should give the game with an overlay for your wide screen TV and I'm not kidding I want my overlay to play the games old school, on an LCD.
When i was little kid i be happy trade in my nes for ventrix even artari 2600 c ause ventrix graphics unique and i think it looks better than ugly pixels of artari. I wish i had one back in those days.
Level 218 is my best. Bragging rights! Took more than 4 hours and I was shattered when I'd finished. Don't know what the score was. I don't think the machine could display it after a certain limit. I own the U.K. version of Minestorm on my 30+ year old vectrex . The U.K. version of Minestorm I believe was released as Minestorm 2 in the U.S. probably just a bug fix of U.K. version.
indeed, if you played this in the day it did feel like the arcade. i didnt have one but a freind did and of course was sick of it so id have it all to my broke ass self when id sleep over in 3rd grade, lol
Hearing that opening tune again sent nostalgia chills!!
You are seriously bringing memories back. I miss my Vectrex!
This is a game of my childhood. Thank you for the reminder. In the afternoon I will play it after work. Greetings from RetroGameCity 😊
I had that console, bought it in 84, i spent hours on that, i miss it, it was great, thanks to bring back so much good memories. ^^
This was one of the absolute best Vectrex games. I want the return of Vectrex!
My uncle just gave me his vectrex I'm so happy lol.
Do you still have it?
Wow, this brought back memories I didn't even know I had ! I was a toddler when I played this ! THAT MUSIC !! ^^
I freakin' loved playing this game for hours on end! I used to love shooting the follow/fire back enemies until they were all small. Then corralling them up and try to blast them all in a row.
AWESOME! Man I missed the review you did for the Vectrex so I will go watch that right now. Way awesome video.
The dentist office that I go to has one of these things. I'll have to buy it sometime, sure is fun to play!
That game looks really bad ass, I love those vector graphics, they look so bright and vivid.
A very well made review of the first Vectrex game! Enjoyed it!

Really nice dude, i love your reviews, keep been nice =)
haha awesome that looks like so much fun. I want a Vectrex now! The graphics are really crisp too.
I liked Mark's reflection in the video at the end.
My dad had one of these when I was a kid. Memories.
Cool review. Thanks!
Great review!!
Does everyone spam the fire button on this game? I've always taken precise shots, to conserve space ammo, or megajoules or whatever...

Does anyone know if you can get a Vectrex's picture displayed on another TV screen through some kind of technical trickery? That would be sweetness.

I forgot to mention that there is a pretty good vectrex emulator called ParaJVE for windows. Just type ParaJVE in your browser.
VECTREX RULES!!!

the stage at 4:30 you kicked ass mark ;D
Vectrex slogan: Give up my Atari? My Intellivision? You bet your Asteroids!
you know Adobe Illustrator used vecotr graphics too. great for resizing because you don't lose quality when you zoom way in or out or when you blow images up to larger sizes
i love Geometry wars! This game reminds me a lot of it!
Hope there are some Vectrex hardware
nerds who can give the technical detail
of the machine.
The system was amazing when I saw it
as a ten year old.
Looks like this video (maybe?) has spawn a run on Vectrex units on eBay. they seem to be going for like 100 clams plus. Yowza :)
this is awesome!
I need Vectrex!
My mum bought a vectrex for my brother in 1982 who spent 2 months in hospital after being hit by a car and was in traction.
Looks good, CRT's can probably display similar with the right settings.
I was so close to buying one, then it got picked up... and out of humiliation, my used game store got a load of Vectrex games
amazing!
Can you pause Vectex games?
Best Game Console ever !
Vectrex, magnavox odyssey and Nintendo Wii are the most inovative consoles ever
Viral Dog would aprove!

Great game!
You see his face a lot in previous videos, also, all games which allow Mark to design his characters, he makes to look like him...
Playing the port on the C64 right now!
When I was a kid I made it to level 54 before my eyes went buggy.
no you didn't, minestorm crashes at level 13
no not onall Vextrex, on mine you could play beyond 30. i think the crashes @ 13 were only the early models
@@themagicboy6548 i know this post is ancient but my vectrex would crash at 13 also, but only sometimes! so my brother and I would try over and over until it didn't crash. Dont forget the overlay? Yeah... I would want to see a overlay for a 60+ inch TV. It would probably need 2-3 man to put it on :D.
well of course it's better then the 360... it's still working after 5 years... unlike most 360's.
This is just as good as Asteroids. Homebrew maker John Dondizila made a dead-on Asteroids clone called Rockaroids and Rockaroids Remix (1996). It costs only $10 on his website. (classicgamingcreations)
lol, nice review. Vectex games kick ASS!
they should make an arcade machine for geometry wars, but with vector graphics! that would be so cool!
I cant really remember but I think it was in his unboxing of the ps3 video.
lol, the overlay would have to be really big to fit my 50 inch plasma!
so amazing... and I'll say it again how can you go wrong with a game system that has trex in its name :D
Did you know that there is a glitch that makes it so that you cannot get past level 13? Anyone that wrote a complaint letter like "argh wyh wai cnt i get past lvl 13 bro?" "dont forget the overlays" lol.
what if you have like a 42 inch tv how would that work with the overlays.
Yes if they make ports for the PS3 or 360 Vectrex games they should give the game with an overlay for your wide screen TV and I'm not kidding I want my overlay to play the games old school, on an LCD.
An improperly insulated speaker wire in close proximity to the cathode ray tube.
dang. i really didn't look because wasn't really looking to get one and i don't like to buy stuff online. i don't even have paypal now.
i watch all of marks reviews in vecter graphics the wiimote rocks in glowing lines! i am serious
Stop saying First people and great review the overlay is so retro =]
best console in the world
I had a Vectrex for a few months. Like most video games and consoles in the mid-1980s, you eventually become bored of the games.
I bet Star Wars Arcade could run on the vectrex if someone tried to make it.
You should review SBCG4AP for Wii avalable through WiiWare (Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People)
When i was little kid i be happy trade in my nes for ventrix even artari 2600 c ause ventrix graphics unique and i think it looks better than ugly pixels of artari. I wish i had one back in those days.
Come back man.
0kay really now what is the point of the overlay for this game
nice! my high score is about 77000, level 7 :D after level 4 (in my oppinion) it gets easier, but then much harder :P

i know... i was just replying to the last thing the guy said in the video.. to put vectrex games on ps3 and 360 "just don't forget the overlay" lol
Much better than asteroids, imo
@thetillman45 Thank you Dr. Ashens. :P
Cut my teeth on this as my first video game system. Then Sonic took over!
the ship looks like a ummmm part of the male anatomy O_o but iv played this game and its awsome :D
Wow. You're a clever one, indeed ^_^
i got to level 32 or 33 ,how have made it know that some levels has invisibles asteroids that folows you.......is any body get there???:)

you can see his face if you watch his old videos...
Mark makes them good! (they are anyway, my opinion)
Please can I have that overlay, can I? Gimme!
This game is a lot easier when you discover what the background dots mean.
I had the original half bowl store stand whahahah
cause its the best word ever
thums up if you think mark would be happy if i gor a spaceship
Everyone does. Vectrex = Win
not that much? The cheapest I've seen a Vectrex go for online is like $150.
And they're more expensive now. In good shape, with controller, they are usually over $300.
Ahhh, I figured it was something to do with that.
indeed, if you played this in the day it did feel like the arcade. i didnt have one but a freind did and of course was sick of it so id have it all to my broke ass self when id sleep over in 3rd grade, lol
