I have always been the person that arrives for work early, does my job well, recommends improvements, thinks outside the box. I have amazing experience in so many industries. But in 2019, I was made redundant ...... Twice .... And am still now unemployed having finished up in late December. Exercise is very important, so is reconnecting with people. Volunteering is something I'm considering. I find peace at the library, it's just great there. I must say, you raised many good points . I have a very structured day, I get up at the same time each day "as if I was going to work", but I do tend to have an afternoon shirt nap sometimes. I walk a lot down at the beach , I find the mornings almost like I'm on holiday. But I find the afternoon s very depressing. I also don't spend more than 1.5 hours a day looking for jobs. It's exhausting and if there's nothing to apply for you tend to , if not managed , just apply for jobs that are completely unsuitable, and that is not helping anyone. Also "if you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got". Try a different approach each week. Check jobs in other places that you don't normally check. Walk around a commercial area and just ask business owners for a job. You don't need 10 offers you need one interview and one offer. Good luck to all and good luck to me . 🙂

@@AliMalik-yt5ex I have a harbour town about 30 minutes away from where I live. I'd drive down there a couple of times a week, and go for long walks. I'm a 37 year old solo parent. I have been working for such a long time and unfortunately I can't continue my job because the employer can't pay anymore. My only child is 16, he has a part time job and is a musician. I just stay at home now and feel like I've gone so backwards. I cook, clean, tidy up, run errands and of course job search. i love u ty ty ty. I thought being unemployed would be nice until I was unemployed for too long... I hate seeing my applications withdrawn so I end up avoiding filling up applications.
Being unemployed for 3 months now.. barely have money to buy food. Starting to learn that I might not be able to eat today, just so I can eat tomorrow. Maybe I'll last a bit longer living that way.
This is really helpful! I really liked the way you said “You’re not the job you do”. I think a lot of people who judge unemployed people unnecessarily, putting a lot of pressure on them Should hear this.More power to you! God bless
I was a crane operator for 15 years and I owned the crane. It was 24 years old and finally wore it out. I didn't want the debt of a newer crane so I tried working for somebody else as a truck driver. I should've stayed but I just couldn't see myself there for another 15 - 20 years. I tried day trading for 4 years I only made money in one year out of 4. When I got serious about getting a job I couldn't get an interview. Nobody would talk to me. I'm 51 and been self employed most of my life with a 4 year gap. I have two jobs now both part time still don't make a living but it's a start. I'm just glad that I don't have a family to support.
I don't work. I've created a life on my own. Some days it gets reaaaaaaallly boring I mean it. That's why I'm looking for hobbies to do and food to cook. But on a limited budget. Spend wisely. The guy is a smiling person. I love his positive personality and I'm drawn to his charm. Hehe! Way to go. :)
Been unemployed for just over three years now, all of my friends have decent jobs ..I really don't want to end up working in a sweatshop getting spoken to like shit or cleaning toilets for a living. I have an arts degree and feel I'm worth more than that! I'm also living at home at the age of 41..its embarrassing. Being in this situation just stresses me out constantly, my family just keep pushing me unto things I hate..like getting a trade. Things I want to go into I just don't have the experience or know the right people.. I also have a disability, trying to get support but honestly no one out there will help me. Most other people get that break, get a leg up but I feel like I'm completely on my own. Nothing ever works. People say to think positive but day to day I am just finding that impossible. I feel totally lost.
Thank you for your words! I haven't graduated yet but I feel like I may be unemployed given the rough time that everyone is living in. 太好了吧!!今年疫情国内内卷成了什么啊!天天失眠脱发!
It's even harder when you got serious anxiety which makes it difficult to even apply for a job. I know I could get a job from the same place I worked at earlier, but now when time has passed, it's so damn difficult to go back. I know it's my thing and I'm not ready to study anything new now, so I should just try.
Much appreciated video of advice. Only problem is I don't feel like exercising, meeting friends or meditating because I don't have a job to talk or moan about while they all do. Just constant responses of declined application emails. Doesn't really make for good company.
That does suck. In that case, as counter-intuitive as it may seem, take a break from applying altogether. I do actually mention this in the video. Limit your search to 2 hours a day or whatever suits you, otherwise it ends up being unproductive and soul-draining. Best of luck to you.
@@OliverCowlishaw Thanks a lot. Plus quick reply. I will or at least to more applicable jobs. I would also add doing courses which I'm considering as that helps spice up the CV. But will try ur steps and maybe do and read things I enjoy.
@@mohamedzaki7127 Anytime, my friend. Also it helped me to remember that all of this is a temporary phase. It won't last forever and you will find employment at some point. A great help is to have that trust in yourself, you're tougher and more resourceful than you think. Much love
I know it sounds cliche but having or building up faith I should say has helped me tremendously. It's a hard pill to swallow when you see everyone else smiling and having a great successful time on social media as we are drowning in a glass of water. It's hard but we are not alone...none of us are. I mean if you read all the comments you can get an idea of just how many good people out there are struggling both physically and emotionally. Have faith I like the last part of this video. You are not your job thus not having one doesn't mean your worthless. It just means unfortunately we have to find a way out. Easier said than done I know I'm one of you but one thing I refuse to lose is the hope in myself. Food for thought.
People fear unemployment and this enigma has taken many good souls. I am in a debt trap and definitely loosing my job will be very big blow but let's think what if it is a chances to make my saving even it is one dollar to 5 dollars then grow it eventually it's is not easy rather it requires more hard work than our current jobs but atleast we will be free from dependency... People think jobs are our ultimate goal yes for some it is, for some it is way of paying the debts.... People here who are in depression or feeling like loosers let me tell you don't feel sad or disheartened this is the time when you need to get your shit together and find a way to make money ... It's all about money in the end .. once you discover it then a new beginning will start for you...

@@Marsha-be hello! Thank you for your comment. Hang in there. It’s really disheartening. I’m trying to stay positive and keep my chin up during these difficult times.
I hate being unemployed. I'm not unemployed by choice. I quit 2 jobs this year because I felt taken advantage of. I hated management complaints about speed. My last job was to be faster when it did have folks to do the job. My job only have the direct manager doing the when I took on the job. They borrow someone from other departments to do the work. The employee want go back her job because she didn't get along with the direct manager. So the direct manager only have herself. So why store complaining about speed. The place was a mess. So I quit. Now my feelings are bother me. I can't take being unemployed.
Was very helpful, love the video. I am unemployed at moment due to having an accident and breaking arm. Also found out I have serious back problems. Never thought I would be unemployed at 53. I do what exercise I can in the day, always in pain. I have been reading a lot, doing meditation, praying. I checked all my fiances and I am coping on benefit money. Some weeks are tight tho. It has forced me to be more creative. I make my own clothes, soaps, washing powder and such. I don't buy junk food at all. All meals are home cooked using cheap cuts of meat and cheap in season veges. I have a craft idea which I am going to work on, could make money at the markets. I am also looking at getting back into novel writing. Yes, this time off is making me more creative.
I'd really love if you bring up the topic of guilt and shame of the past, of something you've done but that now you deeply regret and wish you hadn't done it and that now eats up your peace of mind. How do we cope with that and continue on? Of course I'm not talking about homicid and dark stuff like this. I'm talking more of when you really hurted someone emotionally or over expended the money you didn't have and now you're stuck up with bills and can't find a way out of it. I feel like it's really hard not to condemn yourself when in such situations you know. And even though you're growing out of it, I feel so hard not to let of such things, I guess it's because you didn't only demaged yourself but others also.
I decided to know myself instead of accepting very first job offered and I found many faults and strengths inside me, it was amazing to know myself. But now I think I should seriously get a job.
I basically quit a soul destroying job in a call center towards the end of last year and basically spent 3 weeks chilling and not doing much productive. Then I applied for multiple jobs in places slightly out of my established skillset (primarily teaching English abroad) and in January got rejected across the board. A bit disheartening but no biggie, I then applied for the job I'm in now which was fine at first but is in essence just a slightly better paid version of what I was doing before and don't see myself sticking around much longer, so the cycle may just repeat :/
I've been unemployed for a year now due to the economic recession brought by covid. I lost my job and got injured at my previous work. I'm in a position that no one even wants to hire me anymore because of the previous injury I sustained from my previous workplace. Hopefully, something comes up for me soon.
Wow! Thanks for the video. It was everything I was feeling after I resigned from my job due to a long commute to my company. I am actively seeking employment now. But in the meantime I am going through everything you just said. So this info will definitely help me understand the new person I am right now and change my mind to get through this time in my life. I’m gonna hit play again! God bless.
Just keep it real, and be useful with the little you have, don’t blow it over cigarettes and alcohol. Some days take your self out, speak to people in your community, go city-centre some days and spent time with family. And these we have smart phones, stay in touch family members or friends in parts of world. Stay real. ✌️
I have been unemployed for years , however i am self employed and work for myself which means i am still unemployed i look for my own cash , i invest on the sharemarket those sorts of things , no way i could ever go back to a “JOB” ever unless i am working for someone very special which is fairly unlikely in this society, being self employed is incredibly hard you basically just cover expenses and work for nothing anyway , and that is why i INVEST as well !
I have to quit my job to go back to school in my home town in a week, I’m having a really hard time with this decision because I will only be attending to 2 classes (one hour and a half each ) each week. My hometown is really boring, I have no friends here and I overall feel really lonely. I hope I can make it through this tough period

Hey Grace. Sorry you're having a bad time of it but I'm glad this helped. Ping me a message on Instagram if you want to talk more. Great channel btw! X
It did thanks :) I watched a few of your videos your content is great, really helpful for mental health. Thank you! x
i love u ty ty ty.
Spend time with friends? All my friends got job buddy except me. So they are busy not talking any more. LOL
This is really helpful! I really liked the way you said “You’re not the job you do”. I think a lot of people who judge unemployed people unnecessarily, putting a lot of pressure on them
Should hear this.More power to you! God bless
I've noticed people tend to treat you way worse when you're unemployed.
I'm just glad that I don't have a family to support.
kingmike40 u didnt marry?
@@nogodbutone2450 Maybe he didn't find the one. Maybe he didn't want to get married. Why are you so concerned about a stranger being single?
I don't work. I've created a life on my own. Some days it gets reaaaaaaallly boring I mean it. That's why I'm looking for hobbies to do and food to cook. But on a limited budget. Spend wisely.
The guy is a smiling person. I love his positive personality and I'm drawn to his charm. Hehe! Way to go. :)
I have been unemployed for 5 months and until now I am starting to feel bad... :(
Been unemployed for just over three years now, all of my friends have decent jobs ..I really don't want to end up working in a sweatshop getting spoken to like shit or cleaning toilets for a living.
Dont give up,i wish you a really nice day and a good life
It´s like starting from zero again, great video!
The worse feeling is when u get to a good stage of meeting a head to head recruiter but then get blanked by them. Gives ur confidence a big hit.
Much love
@@OliverCowlishaw Much appreciated bud. Yes fingers crossed I find something soon. One needs to keep faith in himself even when things are down.Cheers
Oliver thank you for this video btw it truly made me smile.
Realising shared humanity is a powerful thing. No matter how much it may feel like it, ultimately, we are not alone.
You forgot no Job means barely any food and you are always at risk of being homeless
Been unemployed as in a fulltime job for 2 years (on and off have small freelances)
struggling to keep sane and suppress suicidal mood
I feel you, brother. I wish you luck in your search.
@@OliverCowlishaw hugs. Thanks.
Hope so.
thank you for this. i just quit my job today because i am extremely unhappy there now. and this will definitely help me out in the next couple of months.
My pleasure sweetheart. Your channel looks cool 😘
Thank you for this video. All the best on your job search. In May of 2019 took the leap of faith and left a stable job to be a freelance photographer and am now enrolled in a career transition course. I aim use this course to find employed work as a photographer. The tips outlined were fantastic, totally agree with tip # 1 exercise is so powerful! I will share your video with friends who need practical tips on how to work through being unemployed.
I’m going to gym daily and reading , meditating and so on , but honestly this unemployment gonna kill me I’m in a very bad anxiety, depression and stress. 😭 god please help me 🙏🏻
Praying for the same myself, Hope things have become better for you
Been unemployed for several months now but feels like you have helped me for the time being to feel better about this experience. Something I have to keep reminding my self that being unemployed isn't so terrible. Thanks Oliver!
No problem Onam!
Corona made me lose my job and I am thankful I found this video.
Thank you Oliver for your advice. I am trying to keep a routine of exercise, creative writing/music, and job hunting to help keep my spirits up thanks to you.
My friends are at work.Ive done reading. But I'm running out of stuff to clean at my house.Dishes done them all ready vaccumed done that cleaned the bathroom done that .I miss working my away from home.
This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my RUclips channel 6 months ago about self development. Now I have 352 subs and > 100 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I couldn’t have learned without getting started in the 1st place.
That's amazing to hear 🔥

youre so sweet for making this video. Im freaking the F O right now feeling so down for being rejected despite my great qualifications :(
It's a game where persistence wins. It's tough but keep going. You're being tested.
Oliver Cowlishaw ❤️🙏🏽
I needed this video! I have been unemployed for the last 6-7 months and honestly, it’s been real tough!
This is me right now, it's so disheartening. I hope things have become better for you.
@@Marsha-be hello! Thank you for your comment. Hang in there. It’s really disheartening. I’m trying to stay positive and keep my chin up during these difficult times.
9 months unemployed now, feeling quite useless actually. My trade is pretty much obsolete, so who knows what 2021 holds.
Lack of confidence and being over weight are my issues at the moment I haven’t worked proper for the past 10 month because of it
Dude email me I'm serious. Let's sort this out.
Yes, this time off is making me more creative.
i clicked on this vid with a lot of scepticism...but this is exactly what i needed to hear. Thanks
Can you do a video on how to stay sane in work?
Great advice. It is a period of interia. Need to understand ourselves better🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I'm stressed and often have high anxiety because of unemployment. Any tips?
I got unfairly dismissed from my job i worked for 4 years now find myself on Universal Credit, Absolutely kills me!.
Thank you, I needed your perspective to keep my momentum.
I greatly appreciate you.
And I appreciate you sharing that. Thankyou 💚
What do you want to do? In this day and age, upskilling to the point where you can be paid for the value you provide is always a possibility.
God bless.
This can be an important time of growth in your life IF you use it wisely and don't give too much energy to those worrying thoughts.
Just keep it real, and be useful with the little you have, don’t blow it over cigarettes and alcohol. Some days take your self out, speak to people in your community, go city-centre some days and spent time with family. And these we have smart phones, stay in touch family members or friends in parts of world. Stay real. ✌️
This guy 🔥💚
I have been unemployed for years , however i am self employed and work for myself which means i am still unemployed i look for my own cash , i invest on the sharemarket those sorts of things , no way i could ever go back to a “JOB” ever unless i am working for someone very special which is fairly unlikely in this society, being self employed is incredibly hard you basically just cover expenses and work for nothing anyway , and that is why i INVEST as well !
There is nothing I hate more in the entire world than applying for jobs.
I here you it absolutely drives me insane I hate it so much
I have to quit my job to go back to school in my home town in a week, I’m having a really hard time with this decision because I will only be attending to 2 classes (one hour and a half each ) each week. My hometown is really boring, I have no friends here and I overall feel really lonely. I hope I can make it through this tough period
Comment: It comes across as though barely no one in society worries about the employment seekers . It's a constant struggle . Why aren't high schoolers taught on how to correctly job hunt? It’s such an important issue.
Wow, thank you so much! :D You make something like unemployment seem like its not a big deal. Thanks for all the positivity and love, its really really helpful, thank you! :)
This was lovely, thank you. You deserve more views.
i love having nowhere to be lol. excercise helps for sure. everytime im unemployed i always work on my own stuff, I produce alot more content when im unemployed

I really appreciate you helping me with this
Brilliant video im going through this now
Thanks for your tips, I am currently unemployed and have been for 4 months now. I will limit my Job Search hours. thanks
I work in the Airport and it’s a 0 hour contract, so sometimes I’ll be working for a month then I’m sitting at home for like 3 weeks then I’ll get a random 2 shifts then I’ll be off again for like a month, the last time I went into work was 9th March and currently since then I’ve been sitting at home bored out of my mind, it’s not fun at all when your friends and family are all working and at college and you’re just at home feeling like a total bum
This made me feel so much better, thanks.
It's a tough spot to be in. But we are not alone.
Love the video so much. Thank you ❤️ wish you all the best.

Thank you so much for this motivational video. I have to higher educations and 2 years in marketing, but still I don’t get a job. Had a mental breakdown when I found your video so this helped me before I dug myself to deep under the ground. 🙏 😊
maybe because you say "to" instead of "two"
I love how I can watch this video and then implement your tips in my life while saying right to my Christianity even thought your tips are from "zen perspective". Cool video - a lot of obvious things I wouldn't and didn't think about.
Its not just unemployment, people often lie about what job they do.

Jobless at the moment myself as well and I honestly dont know what to be doing with myself but some really great tips, very helpful thanks!
Thank you so much for this video, its really helpful.
How are you today my friend? I hope you are great.
I don't have a lot of jobs near me.. so I most likely have to move away and start living a long distance relationship.
But I am looking for over a year now and I don't have the luxury of waiting any longer to find a job in my area.
And all my friends have moved away/living somewhere else/ are away on weekdays.
I had an idea what job I would like after uni... but they are all gone now... I just want any job that is somewhat related to my studies.
And this is the part that breaks me the most.
Dude, this is great - thanks so much..
On point !!
Thanks for this. Helpful ❤
Great advice thank you so much ...was let go 5 weeks ago ....needed some motivations
