I think it was more so a baby's instinctive recognition of accepting the challenge considering Steve grew up to be a wimp. But subconsciously Steve would soon grow to surpass his father.
I'd say Stan genuinely loves Francine. Roger annoys him, but he loves him too. He dislikes Klaus but he's the glue, so he's necessary. I think he loves Hayley more than Steve. They're a lot alike just focus their minds & energies on opposing things which is what disappoints Stan. He comes through for Steve but usually it's for selfish reasons. His own ego mostly. Not wanting to be seen as a failure as a Dad & of course whenever he can try to manipulate Steve's desire to be closer to him so he can help and/ or save his ass
There are a few episodes where he's just honestly a good father that loves Steve. Notably the one about Astral projection comes to mind. 0 BS from Stan and him just honestly wanting Steve to grow up to be a happy adult (and not knowing how to reassure him there) and later just wanting him back.
I know this is old and not exactly the focus of your comment, but Stan and Klaus have a pretty good friendship in private. It’s been stated on more than one occasion that Stan likes Klaus, he just pretends to hate him when they’re around other people.
I was looking for this comment, when he made mouthless hayley in heaven it ‘spoke’ volumes. It does come across that Stan and Hayley are EXTREMELY similar they just have opposite interests. Bust steve is too brainy and sensitive for Stan, Roger is much more of a father figure to Steve. It likely stems from Stan’s horrid relationship with his own father, he does not know how a father should interact with a son and gets cagey and defensive whenever Steve, the sensitive type, tried to show affection. Whereas Hayley, always headstrong and intense, matches Stan’s energy completely. They might butt heads but Stan is always way more comfortable around his daughter than with his son.
How about a compilation of Stan reading a book describing what he's doing. Like "Reading While Waiting" or "Fancy Page Flipping". Seriously, he does it all the time but nobody notices!
Stan: You idiot, you may have killed my son. Roger: There's still time, now where did Steve say that the hot-dog contest was? Stan: God I don’t know he must have told me a thousand times. Roger: I Know me too. Stan: I totally, I just zoned out when that kid is speaking. Roger: Well you have too, is the only way you can get through dinner.
