Oh my why have i never seen this before.its only just come up.what a gem and those three girls singing ive not heard that song for a few years.R.I.P. Luke. Ronnie. Barney.Ciaran.Jim Mcann.thank you for the many year's of wonderfull Irish song's.never to be forgotten.
This is priceless! I knew of this film, and had seen short excerpts, but I didn't know the whole thing was available. I fell in love with Irish folk music when I discovered the Dubliners in 1969. I was a fifteen-year-old English grammar schoolboy then, and I have loved them ever since. It’s a pity Luke Kelly is not in it. He was touring solo in England at the time, and Bobby Lynch took his place. Thanks, thanks, thanks for uploading!
O'Donoghues now has flags/tarps to capture the heat and keep the rain off the tourists. In the deep , warm, cosy parts inside it's still a gem on the good nights.
How I wish I had been alive in 1965 rather than getting born, 4 years later in 1969 and also had I been born in 1965 when classic Dr Who was on in monochrome and starred Bill Hartnell.
Matty and Mick Molloys dad John was in this,,Ronnie worked with him in the early 60s in the Gayity theater ,which one was he theirs a photo in o Donohuges.
"The film and ballad is based on the strange but true premise that in Dublin jails the tradition grew up of the family and friends being allowed to wake the deceased when he was still alive (!) the night before the hanging as they would not receive the body afterwards as condemned prisoners were buried in quicklime pits in the prison grounds. This may seem strange today and it was a courtesy only extended to “Common Criminals” (Not murderers or political prisoners) at a time in the Georgian era when over 200 crimes, mainly against property, attracted the death penalty. Similarly families were allowed to bring food into prisons otherwise the prisoner would starve. Finally the hangman would be paid to get the prisoner drunk so he wouldn’t show fear on the scaffold." more here www.skibbereeneagle.ie/dublin/odonoghues-opera/

I was recruited as an extra in this film back in 1965, and it is really wonderful that the Opera has been rescued and is now available online.
Thats very interesting did you appear in what's left
they need to release a DVD
Were ypu sober when they filmed this, or they paid yer extra stout just to stay on as an extra paddy
an amazing time capsule, truly a gem
So sad a classic like this only gets 93 views while a kitten licking its tail gets half a mill !!
Yep / video killed the radio king and the internet destroyed conversation and reading . Ireland should never have joined the EU .

Ronnie Drew's voice is one step above amazing, and thank you very much for putting this wonderful movie on the tube.

The world is in need of more folk operas, but only if they can be at least half as good as this one.
I really hope some day Criterion Collection gets a hold of and revives The O'Donaghue's Opera.
Very nice upload. Keep sharing this one, it's not a museum piece, it's living history.
Extreme Weather in
Amazing. So much talent. Thank god it was not lost forever.
Good to see Bob Lynch in the group, followed the Dubliners since 65. Stay safe.

Thank you for uploading!
Would be a disaster if this were lost.
Archive preservation is so important, agree.
Ronnie would have made a real great villain he had the character to be anything he wanted he would have been a loveable rouge
Brilliant Stephanie
A nice bit of history...was that Tony McMahon on the box??
Has anyone got the song list or track list for this film? Amazing
I've posted the times and song
I'm not confident about the names of the singers.
Where have you posted them
Is that Annie Briggs playing the cartoonist with Johnny Moynihan?
Back when you could do your homework in the pub.
Constance, take a bow !
good find!
Great
Can anybody tell me the name of the song at 11:30? It starts right after Ciaran and Ronnie get into an "argument"
The Song at 11:30 is "Port Lairge"
I love Ronnie Drew's acting! But there doesn't seem to be a clear narrative in this picture.
Probably has something to do with the fact that it was never finished.
