Richard Kalani Iliwaalani is our great grandfather. Married to our great grandmother Mary Wailehua. Great story!

I was a 6th grader at Lanakila Elementary school when I learned to sing this song in 1960. Our teacher Mrs. Kulaniakea owned that ukulele like a god. This is the first Hawaiian song that pops into my head whenever the uke is passed to me. Mrs. Kulaniakea did not tell us this beautiful story about the author of this song Richard Ili or his boys club, or the connection of Maui and Haleakala. Who'd a thunk Maui was a Waianae boy. LOL
I love this story and your video which brings so much more meaning and appreciation for a song I already love dearly. Mahalo for putting this up!
