- The AIM-120 AMRAAM, which stands for Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile, is capable of all-weather, day-and-night operations and has a beyond-visual-range capability. It is scheduled to remain operational beyond 2050.
“The AMRAAM missile is arguably the most sophisticated air-to-air weapon in use today and for good reason. It has to be in order to address the complex threats we’re seeing from our adversaries,” said Paul Ferraro, president of Air Power for Raytheon Missiles & Defense.

The new AIM-120D 3 was just developed quietly to match and excel over the PL-15 recently. It was done so as a stop gap while the AIM-260 is finished and produced in large quantities. The AIM-260 is almost done and will be entirely new. It will be next gen and far outperform the PL-15 giving the US the tech gap they tend to prefer. There are also several other missile programs like Peregrine in development so I wouldn't be surprised if we see a dedicated large extra long range AWAC killer missile as well.
Lockheed was working on a missile some were calling the half-ram. Same 7" tube but only 6' instead of the AIM-120 12" with no explosive. Hit-to-kill. A new F-35 could carry 12 of them. A B-21 could probably carry 100.
I am wondering why they can use smartphone circuit board technology for the guidance etc..... Why can't they extend range by using staging technology which developed for space rockets. PS...computer AI can control it better now...

Calling those Chinese fighters Stealth is questionable, considering the US Navy was able to detect and intercept them with F35s.
Depending on angle they don't look particularly stealthy at all. Especially the ventral surfaces. They don't look any more stealthy than an F-15 from the bottom.

@@weizhang1913The F-35 pilot was literally looking at the J-20 as it was coming towards it, it had detected it long time ago, plus that was block 3 F-35 not block 4 that is coming up.

I love the videos on this channel. The narrator has the perfect voice for this type of video. Just a couple suggestions though: you gotta work on the closings! So often the video ends and it sounded like you were in the middle of a thought. And every once in a while it’s like the script-writer’s English is just a bit off (nbd) but it hit my ear funny every time lol
pretty sure the f35 can carry aim 9, meteor and aim 132 AA missiles, not just limited to the amraam
F35 can carry aim 120 to but not that many so they don't use it cus it better to have more aim 9. But rython made a new version that's smaller to fit 2 extra missle in it's bay with the same ability as the aim 120 just smaller.

We've upgraded this thing multiple times, and it's basically adjustable to work in almost unlimited situations. All foreign planes are useless against our most advanced missiles.

the missile has developed the ability to know where you are
AIM-120C3 is good, AIM-120D has a lot better range via lofting but the current best medium-long range AA missile is the Meteor which is available on Typhoon & Griffin with F-35 certification coming with TR-3. The no-escape zone of the Meteor is at least twice as large as the C3 and still probably much better than the D since neither of those AMRAAM variants can accelerate in the final phase of kill. What JTAM will bring remains to be seen.

Ya, most everything advanced they have was basically stolen US technology. They have a few things a little different, but they're not nearly as advanced, or lethal as ours.

From what I understand it won't integrate in with the soviet systems. Although they did apparently develop a tablet or phone app to guide western A2A missiles from the soviet era planes. Sounds pretty clumsy though.

Ukrainian pilots are being trained to handle the F-16s; jumping from old MiG's into modern planes is like swapping seats between a 70's car (no matter which one) and a 2022 Audi, BMW or some other "land spacecraft": you wouldn't even know how to start the damn thing! It took one and a half years for our Romanian pilots to train on the F-16s in Portugal, so no, the Ukrainian pilots wouldn't have a clue how to use the new jets, not to mention the infrastructure, spare parts and overall knowhow required to operate them.

Those 5 aces killed nearly all of the NVA airforce. That is why the u.s had air superiority. An aims120 was not used to shoot down the balloon, it was an aims9 sidewinder, and it hit the balloon destroying it (I looked it up)

My most favorite fighter jet is the F14 , with a skulled pilot would dominate any of these new age fighters due to payload. A F14 super Tomcat has far more capability than any of these current fighters combined.

You mean PL-15? But PL-15 is 40% larger and certainly one of the heaviest. It don't have the same maneuverability of older dual thrust AIM-120C or a ramjet hybrid like Meteor. Its is only useful for larger and slower aircraft like tankers and AWACs. Its also why AIM-260 JATM maintains the same form factor of AMRAAM to preserve some of its kinematic performance.
@@johnsilver9338 all variants of the AIM 120 use a single solid booster engine while the pl 15 uses dual booster, one to boost it up to a top speed of mach 4.5 and another to help it retain its speed, similar to that of a meteor. maneuverability in a bvr missile does not matter that much unless if its significantly worse which it is not. bvr missiles are usually notched or defended kinematically, having to dodge a bvr missile is rare and hard since you basically cannot visually see the missile. on paper, the pl 15 is better than the latest AMRAAM but America is aware of that and is making a counter to it and I believe the meteor is better than the pl 15, its ramjet engine is insane

@@OscarZheng50 The D variant uses a single booster. Not the C. Hence why Lockheed Martin's AIM-260 JATM is a good replacement for the D variant as it uses a dual-pulse propulsion to extend its range. Similar to PL-15, JATM will have a range around 250-300km, but has a better seeker as it has 3 terminal guidance while also being smaller. It's the 1st BVRAAM to use an IF seeker.
Raytheon's Peregrine missile on the other hand will be a good replacement for dual-thrust C variant as it uses a multi-stage rocket propulsion due to its modularity. It's basic form can already reach 120km at minimum while only being half the size of an AMRAAM.
took 2 of these to shoot down a 5000 dollar Chinese balloon. First one missed. No big deal as they only cost around a million dollars a shot.
How do you know it missed there's literally no source that says that anywhere and this missile has seen alot of combat and shot alot of planes down clown 😊
