As someone who has only a little G&S exposure and wants more, what's the most accessible place to start? What performances, and are they available online?
The three most accessible are HMS Pinafore, the Pirates of Penzance, and the Mikado, although the Mikado is a bit controversial. Just looking at the libretto, the Mikado is clearly a satire of Victorian England set in an only slightly connected to reality version of Japan. However, over the course of its life, the staging of the play began to take on so many racist tropes (again, not found in the original) that it's gotten something of a bad name. However, recently, some companies have begun putting on productions satiring that very accumulated racism, using a cast of actors of Asian descent in Victorian garb. It's a strange turn, but I'm just happy the excellent music and lyrics are being salvaged from their unfortunate past.
I'm sorry for the delay in response, Lazy! Your question made my day however. I love talking about G&S haha. Unfortunately there are very few quality recordings of G&S music out there. There are many reasons for it, but to my understanding, it has to do with the fact that G&S were Victorian, and Victorians were frowned upon in the world of art and music, because they leaned more towards family friendly content, as opposed to the risque operas and art that were being produced in that day. That was exactly the reason why G&S wrote what they did. There still remains to this day a general disdain for G&S in the musical community, which in my opinion has absolutely no grounds. Some of their works such as Yeoman of the Guard have some of the most excellent music in them, to match that of any other great composer! I would recommend you check out all the overtures in their original orchestral form- I can name a few here in the order I'd recommend them: Ruddigore, Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, Patience, Mikado, Yeoman of the Guard. There are more but that's a good place to start! Also check out the King's Singers album called Here's a Howdy Do. Some of my favorites in the album are A British Tar, Ah Leave Me Not, With Cat Like Tread (which theme appears in this overture!) but all the songs on the album are great. Some other favorite songs I love are Nevermind the Why and Wherefore, I am So Proud, There Grew a Little Flower, Then One of Us Will Be a Queen. Like I said you may have trouble finding great recordings, but try to look past that and open your mind to some astounding musical genius! Good Luck!
I've never heard anyone play Arthur Sullivan better on piano than you. Truly next level. It's (better than) like listening to a full orchestra. Such beautiful intonation.
If I could go back several decades in time to my teens or 20s to learn piano more seriously, i'd be satisfied just to play this, other G&S overtures, and ragtime.
This is a great rendition of that amazing overture! I’ll be writing a story about two high school kids who’re part of their theater club, starring in the school’s production of “Pirates.” Love how you “get into character,” very cool-and inspirational! Thanks! 😊Good stuff!!
Heard this overture in its orchestral version on the radio earlier today - and then exploring, tonight, on RUclips - find this piano arrangement of it (way beyond my abilities, may I say) and what a wonderful performance !!!
I mainly play organ and just a little piano. G & S I have heard since early high school days but didn't start hearing, on vinyl and later seeing entire operettas firstly on stage then others on VHS when several were released on video here in Australia. I liked Pinafore, Pirates, Mikado, Gondoliers, Rudigore, Sorcerer and pretty much all the rest. I find now if a Sullivan tune is in my head it sometimes turns into another from an entirely different G&S operetta. A lot of the melodies have very similar phrasing and structure. You play very well, thankyou for making these available.
I came for Final Fantasy. I shall stay for Gilbert and Sulivan. HMS Pinafore is a personal favorite, although I can actually sing an almost halfway passable version of the Judge from Trial by Jury.
Very nice performance! I was looking for original cast recordings going back as far as the late 19th century, but the piano and performance here was good! Thank you!! Oh I forgot the little ditty of "salt" from pinafore in the middle section. Well salted Sullivan!
Well done. I haven't heard this since we performed PoP in my senior year at high school. I wanted to play Frederick my choir teacher said no can do, I was needed down in the orchestra pit to play the difficult pieces our motley orchestra couldn't handle. This one was done in a 2-piano arrangement. It's fun to hear it again after all these years. Thanks, Kara.
When I was in middle school our school performed the Pirates of Penzance. I still remember most of the songs we sang. However... Whenever I think of The Pirates of Penzance now, I think of: "I am the very model of a scientist Salarian! I've studied species, Turian, Asari, and Batarian. I'm quite good at genetics (as a subset of biology), because I am an expert (which I know is a tautology)." God, I love the Mass Effect trilogy. (If you don't know that version of the song, do yourself a favor and look it up, it's only a couple minutes and it's really fun.) I really appreciate that you do more than just video game music, Kara, and it was great to hear this song again. I haven't heard it in years.
@@KaraComparetto Mordin Solus in Mass Effect 2 sings a parody of the Modern Major General song, and then in 3 he sings snippets of other parts of the play. Totally one of the highlights of the series which has a multitude of highlights.
Major General: “Do you know what it means to be an Orphan?” Pirate King: “Often (Ophten)” Major General: Yes, do you know what it means to be one?” Pirate King: “Ophten! Ophten! Ophten!” General Major: “I think we misunderstand one anoother. When you say ‘Ophten’ (Orphan) do you mean someone who’s lost his parents ‘Ophten’ (Often) frequently?” Pirate King: “Ha ha ha, I beg pardon! A-frequently!” Major General: “Ah ha, you said Ophten (Orphan) frequently!” Pirate King: “No! Only once!” Major General: (annoyed) Yes yes! You said “Often” frequently, only once!”
Major General: Why do I sit here? To escape from the pirates’ clutches, I described myself as an orphan; and, heaven help me, I am no orphan! I come here to humble myself before the tombs of my ancestors, and to implore their pardon for having brought dishonour on the family escutcheon. Frederic: But you forget, sir, you only bought the property a year ago, and the stucco on your baronial castle is scarcely dry. Major General: Frederic, in this chapel are ancestors: you cannot deny that. With the estate, I bought the chapel and its contents. I don’t know whose ancestors they _were,_ but I know whose ancestors they _are,_ and I shudder to think that their descendant by purchase (if I may so describe myself) should have brought disgrace upon what, I have no doubt, was an unstained escutcheon.
