- In the most detailed interview on the Indian Air Force Rafale fighter, former IAF Western Air Command chief Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar speaks for the first time in vivid detail about the acquisition he participated in, the enhancements, the politics and more. An interview that answers most questions people have on the deal, the jet and what comes next.
He also speaks at length about comparisons between the Rafale and Chinese J-20, and why he has his heart set on the LCA Tejas Mk.2 as the true jet to look out for.
For those who don't know...
He was an ace fighter pilot , he lead the formation of Mirages that bombed the Tololing top during Kargil War....which destroyed enemy's command & control base in that sector and several enemy officers and soldiers were killed !!!
For a civilian the most telling and chilling part of the interview was to hear it said very simply and matter of factly that the Airforce we have didn't act as a deterrent to Chinese bullying tactics
To think that this vulnerability is a consequence of political mischief is even more infuriating
Unforgivable, absolutely unforgivable
India inducted rafale after 23 years of induction of sukhoi 30mki..
@@sinner5632 the vunerability is not at the full scale warfare level. the chinese still dont believe that they can win a full scale war. what they do think is that we lack detterence at the sub conventional level of warfare. (read as weak perceived political will) . i dont see how the congress can be blamed for weak perceived political will in 2020. That being said , the congress was super sloppy when it comes to defence procurement , i do realize that.
@@sinner5632 bro, Ive read the comment.
the squadron strength of the IAF would only matter in case of a war, the dispute hasn't escalated to a war...... This means that the current squadron strength of the IAF (although not ideal) is sufficient to deter a war.
But the Chinese started this galwan valley affair only since they believed that they could get away with it in the first place.
That fact that they believed that they could get away with a limited conflict shows a lack of detterence at a level lower than war. (not due to a low squadron strength - cause otherwise they would have escalated to proper war. )
Basically, the galwan and doklam standoff can't be blamed on low IAF numbers. I feel that the Chinese have perceived the government to be unwilling to respond. Ie. Lack of detterence at a level below war.
This is my point. I don't have much else to say.
No your air Force or army doesn't have any will to fight an aggressive encroachment when an opponent is of your size, yet a nation that is 3X smaller and has 9X less in defense budget will break your jaw even for an inch of their land. It's about will, and deny your enemies with any Force possible.
@Chirag Amen to that
Thanks to Shiv Aroor Jee for this interview and special thanks to Raghu Nambiar Sir. Jai Hind 🇮🇳

One of the best defense talk show I had ever watched...Thanks Shiv... Air Marshal Nabiar was wonderful listening to.....
An interview I thoroughly enjoyed. AM Nambiar answers brilliantly and with honesty and clarity. Thanks Shiv for a great experience. I am so much wiser now.
Thanks a Lot, Shiv Aroorji, for this Gem. Today, I got 'Gyaani' in many things(And I thought, I know something).
Justifying his first name, My Respect to Nambiar Saheb, for giving us this 'Gyaan'. Glad to have such Patriots. May Raghu Ram Bless him.
Air Marshal Raghu Nambiar, seems to be an University. I have learnt more about aircrafts, air defence and airforce capabilities through this discussion, than my entire research put together. Thanks for putting this discussion together.
Superb interview. A truly quality interview. Very very honest and heartfelt.
The best interview to get a complete perspective of IAF !! Thank you Sir for your valuable inputs & also Thank you Shiv for arranging & giving us the opportunity to understand our IAF.
JAI HIND.
Thanks Shiv Aroor for such a factual journalism 🤩🤩
I was hoping sir will become our chief. Salute to you for operation सफेद सागर
This is the kind of candidness one expects from a person of his stature. Much appreciated Shiv. It is a privilege to listen to someone like Mr.Nambiar and thanks for interviewing him.
Best information ! Salute to you Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar ! Jai hind
Listening to raghunath Nambiar sir is such a delight🔥
Such a articulated and informative speech by former Air Marshal IAF...👍🙏🇮🇳🙏
Thanks a million Shiv for this very informative session with Air Marshall Nambiar.
It is always exciting to listen to him speak the fine details 👍👍
We wasted 2 decades on idiotic political squabbling! I just hope the emergency purchases from Russia currently underway will be retrofitted with indigenous firepower and we slowly minimise all dependency of expensive foreign hardware. No single country should have this monopoly on our defence procurement.
We need to encourage students to get into metallurgy and aerospace. Even for pure electronics.
@Fo We Atmanirbhar means both Indian PSU, Indian private companies also
Nambiar sir very nice gentle and good human being.
AM Nambiar is so supportive of Tejas & AMCA...... & Abhijit Aiyer Mitra condemns them & advocates F 21 & F 35.
He's also so dismissive of the IAF's efforts to upgrade SU 30 MKI and other fighters in the inventory& generally of the ability level of the IAF top brass.
Would love to see a discussion between them both!
Abhijit is not a weapons platform expert. Keep that in mind 😎
thank you shiv for such wonderful conversation.
I would definitely want Mr Raul to sit, see and listen (not hear) this interview. .. Good job Shiva
He doesn't have that much IQ to understand this😎
Very informative. Its a delight to listen to domain experts.
This is gold!!
The MRCA is a waste of time !! Just go forward and get 5 more squadrons of Rafale!!
Edit : Fantastic Interview !! Please keep doing more of this 👍 👍👍
After everything included the per aircraft cost is roughly $200 million dollars..if we procure 90-100 aircraft..our whole defence budget will be doomed..I hate to say this but we can't afford it..we are not US or china..we would probably go for 70-80 million aircraft which most probably is a single engine aircraft..we need QUALITY AND QUANTITY.. we can't send 4 rafale against 16 aircraft
@@Utsav_03 200 millions with spare parts, maintenance, offset, weapons, training, etc... It's a little more expensive than F-15E (171 millions $)
The Rafale bunit cost is around 90 millions $.
@@neage59 first of all..what u gonna do with just unit cost? Are not not gonna buy weapons, maintenance or training etc..u gonna put it on museum or just fly at airshows.. what's the point of saying..look but per unit cost is around 90 million.. so is f-35.. or maybe a little cheaper..we are 3 trillion dollars economy not 15-20trillion..we can't afford 90-100 aircraft..mmrca 2 is probably gonna go for single engine aircraft which are cheaper to build and operate..
@@Utsav_03 @utsav You said "we would probably go for 70-80 millions aircraft" you gave the unit cost of a single engine aircraft. So you take the global cost of the Rafale and you compare it to the unit cost of a single engine aircraft like Gripen E. It's why I told you the unit cost of the Rafale.
For F-35, 90 millions is the manufacturing cost, not the flyaway cost. The flyaway cost if far more expensive according to GAO.
Agreed. 😂👍
Very engaging conversation Shiv 👍🏻
Shiv Aroor. Excellent presentation. But you forgot to include another super specialist. Have you heard his name. Air Marshal Rahul Gandhi. The super fighter pilot who can talk on everything.
Mr Aroor I am reading your India's most fearless it's an excellent compilation. Waiting for third part
2023 and we're still contesting for 114 jets...
What a great interview.
Nambiar sir makes it so simple and sublime.
Thank you sir for your service to the nation.
A wonderful and highly informative discussion. Hope it's heard by our policy makers and a right decision is taken/
Excellent interview. Thanks Shiv Aroor.
Very vivid explanation to the listener concerned. Thanks to Air Marshall Nambiar and journalist shiv aroor
Air marshal Nambiar presented a very hard hitting truth and kept it as it is. SM is flooded with multiple fighter programmes may it be AMCA, MWF, TEDBF, ORCA the list goes on and names keep changing. That's some reality check right there.
Pragmatic Interview overall, a person like me with no knowledge could understand many things out of this interview in many aspects.
Brilliant interview, learned a lot on Air strategy and future of procurements and immediate threats.
It's really an eye opener
Thanks SHIV for the interview with a brilliant air strategist like AIR MARSHALL NAMBIAR
One of the most enlightening and informative interviews I have ever seen on this subject. The eloquence of both these professionals is astonishing! Needless to say I have always been a great fan of Mr. Aroor, now I am a fan of Mr Nambiar too! Besides, I have seen him in action piloting our TEJAS in several Air Shows in Bangalore.
Many thanks!
Air marshal Nambiar is saying what many others are saying for many years, STOP BUYING MILITARY EQUIPMENT FROM RUSSIA.
You get much better military equipment at the same price from the US or France.
Russia is a third world country with a GDP per capita of only 10,000 usd, not even in top 10 economies of the world.
A wise person once said "I can never afford to buy cheap." If you buy a cheap product that is designed to get the job done but not last, you are inevitably going to have to replace it frequently. So, if resources are scarce and you are going to use the product often/on a regular basis, then it makes more sense to get something that is not only better in quality and reliability but is going to literally last a lifetime of use.
Ironically there is a quote from a Russian entrepreneur that makes the same point - Vladimir Gendelman, “Growing up in Russia, my mom used to say, 'We're not rich enough to buy cheap things. ' She meant that cheap products are likely to break or need replacing, so buying one high-quality, long-lasting item is a better investment."
Russian engines were not designed to last as they figured that in a serious conflict the aircraft were most probably going to get shot down in 3 months time, so it did not make sense to equip them with engines that were built to last.
I think the only engine they made that was superior to the west and that was used by NASA in their Atlas rockets was the RD-180. I am not aware of any other engine that the USSR made that was superior to what the west or the Japanese produced or produce till date. I am more of a car guy, and I think even my first car, the Premier Padmini was better built than what the USSR had to offer at the time.
But Russians made world class missiles and submarine even USA never want to see them in fight also air defance systems
@@j__c1955 Let me answer you Indian style - But that is why only we are purchasing the S400. ;)
Yes we hear him, but NATO commander said during Syria war that none of the NATO jets matches Russia in the sky, why did he made such statemsnt, not sure whom to believe is it NATO commander who spearheaded Entire NATO jets or Air Marshal
@@j__c1955 exactly US doesn't even have supersonic missile but the Russians have supersonic and hypersonic missile
Very interesting interview....👌✌️🇮🇳
Spread this channel as much as possible...

Brilliant analysis Sir! Thank you for your service to India 🙏 Respect 🙏 🇮🇳
Excellent renderation by Air Marshall Nambiar very level headed. Nathan Sekhar Sydney Australia.
Thank you Shiv for having such legends and enlightening our minds on projects and situation awareness.
Yes Air Marshall Raghunath Nambiar. We will be successful in producing AMCA. I might be overconfident but I wish or See my Daughter Flying AMCA. I am pushing hard my daughter to be in IAF . She is in Third Standard right now. Jai Hind 🇮🇳🇮🇳. Let's see if my Daughter gets into IAF. Just need your Blessings on the future Generations Kids of India🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳. Respect and Salute to you. Its good to see Nambiar uncle after a long time.
Hope to see interview of Ace Pilot when 100 MK1a will be signed & he would explain bit more about maintability & weapon package compared to latest miragees
I was in school when he was commandant of ASTE. Humko bhi pilot banna tha. Sir retire ho gaye, hamara AFCAT bhi nhi nikal raha.
Shiv pleased with your work related to defense. Please could you make videos on electronic warfare as our country is not taking it seriously.
People who are a part of IAF including me are strictly instructed to not reveal such facts in media. But when it comes to officers, they are free to do anything. They keep such rules in their pockets.
Why Congress was sleeping from such a long time. So basically we are flying 40 years old aircraft OMG!
Abbe ghonchu... Congress wanted to buy 126 Rafales. Chinese agent came and reduced that to 36 so that it could benefit chota ambani and put national security in danger. Now there is a shortage and govt had to approve additional Su-30 and Mig-29 which are old gen aircraft.
@@vijeth12345 if they wanted to buy why no Rafale was brought till 2014 ?
@@vijeth12345 Abey chutiya Chinese agents wanted to buy 126 aircrafts when our total squadrons would have fallen to 10. Smallest double digit possible.

Thanks to the IAF technicians & maintenance staffs putting huge effort to keep these aged fleet airworthy despite issues like lack of spares, repeatative snags etc.
Awesome Interview 👌👌 many technical, political and factual things which people don't know. Loved it, looking forward for similar interviews by Shiv sir
Indian armed forces or MoD is acting like engineering students who study whole syllabus in night before exam 😂😂
And those who secure very good marks even after that?
@@gtanj good marks are hardly metric of good skill.
@@avi4606 They indicate some degree of fire and passion.

Thanks brother 👍
additional Rafale M-MRCAs need to be procured, instead of 114 MRFAs of a brand-new design.
Shiv Aroor, is it time for another interview with AM Raghunath Nambiar on the 114 MRFA and possible options such as follow on options for the Rafale to be tied in with the IN's MRCBF contest? Also would be very interesting to get his opinion on the Tejas Mk2 and AMCA and also whether the IAF should be involved in an Air Force variant of the TEDBF, an ORCA.
Very informative..Thank you sir..Thank you Shiv..
6 things we need to develop ourselves 1. Engine, 2. Ew Suit, 3. Pods, 4. Ejection Seats, 5. Helmet, 6. Cockpit to call the plane truly Indian. Hope for AMCA we will integrate our own parts.
Yes and we need to encourage more engineering students to enter metallurgy and aviation . I am an ECE student in a premiere engineering institute in India and I noticed that during counselling, seats for metallurgy and aerospace were just left out to be grabbed by children with lower ranks because children who fell into the initial cutoff took admission in some other college for computers. More than 60 percent of seats were filled in the open for all session . Unless we show these fields in the same light as computer science a fully indegenious AAMCA will remain a dream.
@@confusednsutian7100 well said 👍
Thanks Shiv - one of your best
Great knowledge, clarity and hope this will shut up those who are just hawking in hands of enemy strategy of demoralising IAF
Thank you Shiv for this informative interview.
Shiv bhai many thanks. You are fast capturing growing space of defense journalism in India. Thanks to Rahul Gandhi people have interest now.
Big fan of yours...
Wish you all the best Shiv..👍
Extremely extraordinary. Explained with total honesty and not only professional knowledge but also very very high operational experience. The government needs to make professional team of highly calibrated experienced professional personnel even the retired once and heed their advice and catch up with lost time in coming years. Babus from government should not get involved in technical matters and their job should be to provide necessary funds and other support as per requirements. All defence or high value defence contracts must be government to government. Period.
Fantastic discussion.
Good video. Mr. Nambiar has a vast knowledge and he speaks from his heart.
Voice of an honest soldier.

Very insightful, intersting & informative. Thanks Aroor.
Grab this opportunity to get the private sector involved in our defense production. They are capable of identifying and employing the best engineering and manufacturing talent.
Thankfully the interviewer was intelligent enough to let Mr. Nambiar do most of the talking..Unlike other interviewers who hardly let their guests speak & keep butting in with their half baked inputs just to appear intelligent to the audience.
Very Good insight
Very informative and factual coming straight from Air marshal
A very pertinent question to ask the ACM when it was mentioned that the strategic partnership model has broken down... was to actually go ahead and ask about procurement for at least another two sqd of Rafaels in order to make up for the envisaged 114 MRF to a certain extent. Can’t believe how you could’ve missed that very valid question Mr. Aroor. Ok I agree it’s the govt of the day which makes the decision and CCS approval and finance Ministry all that circus needs to take place first... but what is IAF’s view on this? Are they happy and satisfied with just the 36 number emergency procurement ? Have they informed the government in crystal clear and no uncertain ways that more procurement of Rafales is the order of the day and to be considered pronto? Would be a really sorry and sad state of affairs if another new ac type say Gripen is somehow procured as part of this 114 mmrca 2 contest. Especially tragic to think about it when so much of effort and backroom work has already been put in for the Rafale ISEnhancements. Also the groundwork in Ambala et al are ready to absorb more squadrons of Rafales... then why oh why oh why is IAF brass even thinking about kickstarting another new contest? Just hit the ground running with more sqds of Rafale. Why do we always need to shoot ourselves in the foot with all these multiple ac logistical chains? No other country with aspirations of becoming a superpower operates so many different ac types as iaf does. Doesn’t make any sense in terms of teeth to tail ratio to have another new type of ac join the orbat... just can’t wrap my head around the thought process in air hq and south block.. makes me so fuc#ing frustrated
So this was a very valid question to ask instead of amca and other hypothetical sh#t which may never see the light of the day before 2051 or so....
From the interview i understood that IAF is in a mess
Brilliant interview...☺👍👍
Super very informative program
mindblowing superb salute air commodore sir
Air Marshal
I was sad to see Air Marshal begging our govt nd stupid BEAUROCRASY to buy aircraft 😔
23:30-Shiv to AM-'Your perspective as western air commander of chinese air force'
Really enjoyed the video. Also, great moustache!!
Abhinandan was beaten up because his Fighter Jet didn't had SDR, Secure Real-time Data link, Electronic warfare systems, long range Air to Air missile. His communications systems were Jammed and he flying blind into trap. Its a shame for entire India to watch Abhinandan getting beaten up. Who is responsible for this?
Modern day Fighters win with electronics, IRST, IFF, Targeting Pods(laser designator, an integrated navigation FLIR and high-resolution imagery), AESA radars, Real time Data Link sending huge amount of data, imagery and live video feed, AWACS aircrafts and AAM missiles. We in India are talking about Ferry Range, Service ceiling, Top speed, G limits, weight etc.
Talk about AESA radars, SDR, RWR, electronic countermeasures (ECM), electronic protective measures (EPM) and electronic support measures (ESM).,EM operations like intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) and signals intelligence (SIGINT)
EW suite have MAW, LWR, RWR, ECM, TRD, SPJ systems.
Below are the best fighters in the world because they have best EW systems:
Rafale = Thales Spectra EW system
Euro Typhoon = EuroDASS Electronic Warfare suite
USA F22 = AN/ALR-94 electronic warfare suite
USA F35 = AN/ASQ-239 F-35 EW system
Swedish JAS 39 Gripen = EWS 39 electronic warfare suite
USA F18 Growler = AN/ALQ-218 EW system
So you think our IAF is not aware of it?
In fact from the starting point of Tejas project back in the history IAF specified integrated EW suite in it. But later in 2007 due insufficient internal space issue in Tejas mk1A IAF opt for external SPJ form Israel. While Tejas mk2 will possess internal EW suite.
FYI, our Mig29upg has an internal EW suite ie. D-29, a JV of DARE & Elisra, supported by internal jamming pod EL-568 from Italian company Elletronica (this very same pod is used in EW suite of Typhoon tranche 2, in 2011).
Our 100% indigenous EW suite is ready back in 2015 & will be fitted on MK2 with further enhancements.
We have our SDR made by HAL, & actually inducted in su30s, but are not good. So, now IAF ordered around 1000 Datalink cum SDRs from Israel for all the fighter jets.
EL/M-8221/2 SPJ is already there, but procured in less quantities & that's why Avinandan's jet didn't had it, but his wing man had it. (Unfortunately, Abhinandan had to break the formation, got out of SPJ operational range, so, it became vulnerable to missiles & got hit.)
IAF is well informed & has excellent vission, it's just civil officers who impose red tapes on procurement leaving IAF vulnerable.
Kindly check the first reply, from James faloon, its a slap on your face. Kindly don't be a typing tiger, the Indian airforce is aware and doing their best with all funds that is provided.
It's E/A-18 growler not F/A-18.
Brave abhinandan pissed on a f 16

Very practicle analysis by Air Marshal. Govt. should spent more on air-force and immediately take decision to purchase more Rafale Aircrafts for our immediate needs.
Best Explanation
Shiv do a video on bhramos areospace and their future plans regarding bhramos 2 etc..
Why are we comparing with transport aircraft and not fighter aircrafts in case of payload fraction ?
What about su35 of china. .
Shiv you could come up with a story on Bombers, China is having and why We are going for it,what are the advantages and disadvantaged
Shall do sir
Air Marshal Nambiar sir, should you recommend that MMRCA II scrapped off & we should buy two more squadrons of Rafale before going for indigenous ORCA/TEDBF??
Development of LCA MK 2, TEDBF/ORCA, AMCA, LCA SPORT in hands ADA alone.
Production of LCA MK 1A and MK 2, LCH, LUH, HTT 40, LCA SPORT in hands of HAL alone.
Edit: Even almighty can't save us.
They are going to sell them
Undoubtedly the best of them all. He should have been the air chief than RKS Bhadauria
This guy is honest enough to indirectly admit Pakistan air force with F-16s n JF-17 Block 3 is way superior than what his comrades are to fly, very surprising!
Thanks Shiv, watched the full 48 minutes riveted in my seat. Only thing is I just can't understand his view on Tejas. He says it has everything including composites and glass cockpit but doesn't commit on it as a worthy replacement of current aircraft. Just can't figure out why they designed the wing that way and keep complaining that it doesn't reach high AoAs and can't carry a lot.
Why don't IAF acquire Cheap,Affordable,Cost Effective Single Engine FIGHTERS like Gripen NG or F-21 in large numbers quickly to boost the declining squadrons strength ?.
Sir gripen fighters jointly developed by 3 countries. If any one country is not ready to supply logistics in war like situation or war our aircraft will be wasted.f21 fighter is the upgraded version of f16 only some modifications in this plane.already our enemy pak is using them, they are experienced this plane comparred to us this is draw back
MMRCA 2.0 deal kya hoga
Hi, I wanted to start a defence manufacturing industry which manufactures rifles, grenades and attack drones, but I don't have any idea how to get started and what and all procedures should I do to get the license and how do I get the technology to make these??
I really followed the mmrca competition if the Congress or the upa 2 had shown some spine we could have easily got 126 rafale aircraft they took 2.5 yrs or more for cost negotiations .
We got just planes nothing else.
nice conversation ...
Agar India ne su 30 ki jigah f15 liya hota toh aaj woh BHT advantages dilata h and ab toh wo aur advance hogya f15ex banke even rafale se bhi Jada rating di gayi h usko
Change MMRCA to just MRCA, like it originally was.
