Manual Push Mower and LONG GRASS - Bosch AHM 38G and Scotts Push Mower

  • Grass in the yard has grown long. About 12 inches especially at the edges. Great opportunity to test to see if the manual push mowers can cut it as it is common understanding that push mowers are not able to grass that is too long. Check out the video to see how the Bosch and the Scotts perform.

I just used my bosch hand mower for the first time today. It was so easy, even kind of relaxing and therapeutic. I grew up using a hand mower but the old ones were lot heavier to push. I prefer a hand mower to a noisy petrol motor. I've had both. The lawns not perfect but it's good for in between the landlords lawnmower mans irregular visits :)

Thanks for sharing. Agree that the old ones are heavier. Good point. The Bosch is lightweight comparatively. And don’t have to deal with batteries, cords or petrol.

Yeah, I used mine today, and the grass was long. It was easy going, but sometimes I wanted to pick up the push power and throw it against the wall. I think I'll need to use it regularly to avoid the frustration. It's a nice machine.

I have a Bosch AHM 38 G and it cuts like that "Scotts". I still use it - once every few days in Spring and summer, on lawns that are quite a bit bigger than that one, are sloping, and full of weeds. If I let them go a week or more, I can't use the Bosch - it's too hard to push, slips and jams all the time. I was wondering why until your video made me check - I bought it in 2018 and haven't sharpened it in all that time... must do that tomorrow!

I've recently started using a manual reel mower on a one acre lawn after previously using a gas push mower.
The passive mowing with the reel mower, it is nowhere near as noisy, doesn't vibrate due to a motor, and requires far less maintenance compared to a gas push mower.. oil changing, blade removal and sharpening, pull rope replacement, filter replacement, filling with gas, etcetera.
Plus, push mowers don't like to start hot so you have to mow all in one go. With a reel mower you can mow more passively at intervals, and as needed when the faster growing grass in your yard needs it.

After trying to mow my lawn with a reel lower, before purchasing one, please know this. If you have a yard with slight hills, bumps, _please_ get a gas mower or riding mower. It gets extremely difficult with a reel mower. I spent 6 hours outside on a small-medium lawn yesterday, went over the grass several times, and I still couldn't get my lawn looking decent enough.

    That's a workout!.........................for such a short space............I bet your heart sounded like a DRUM!
The Bosch is either new or you've done a really good job of sharpening the blades.................the Scotts needs sharpening.
When you let it grow that tall, the mower blades end up cutting the same blades of grass several times and that's why it takes more effort.
At first I thought you had mulch around the edges but there's no way the mowers would have handled mulch.......................mulch stops the blades from turning.

I like Reel Mowers, but they really only do well on shorter grass. If you’re cutting every couple of days they’re worth it over a gas powered. They have real precise cutting, so on like short turf type lawns….they make those look amazing. Anything other than that…..they suck.
