I can relate as I worked in health care, my husband is an engineer I worked 12 hour shifts and so did my husband usually the opposite shifts. If that wasn’t hard try raising children in a house with shift workers. Especially when you could not get people to watch your children past certain hours. Often I took them to work with me until my husband could pick them up. If I was extremely lucky my in law would entertain them for an hour or two. I loved my job but 12 shift were hard.

I’m a nurse and if you do get to eat or drink anything during your shift you’re lucky I used to work three shifts when I started nursing and when I was on midnights I didn’t sleep for the whole two weeks finally I wasn’t allowed to do midnights anymore I just couldn’t handle it so I work days and evenings but it’s hard it’s hard on your body and it’s hard on your mind. It’s very hard for your body to adapt to two or three different schedules.
Thankfully I only did day shift. I'd be brutal to be in night shift. When your hours change, that's another story. One thing all employers should do is ask new people who go from one shift to another how their health is. Circadian rhythms and digestion all take a toll. If the shift causes health issues, paid time off. As for taking 10 years of their life comment, it depends on the condition of the person going into the profession. Another idea that should be mandatory is if you have been with your employer for a minimum amount of years, time off for 3 months. First responders, unlimited time with counselling if needed.
Another great video Randy! Great tips! I know how detrimental shift work is. I had to leave a job because of it. It was made worse as the rest of my household worked 9-5. Even though I was still eating healthy and being active, the evening shifts totally thru off my metabolism. I'm so respectful of all 1st responders who are able to make shift work work for them.
Thank you for the valuable tips again Officer Arsenault. Out of curiosity, can employers have employees work consistent shift work schedules? I do not mean to sound cruel, but I have seen doctors during the duration of covid specify that keeping consistent work schedule improves circadian rhythms, eating schedules, and helps plan ahead for their "life" portion off work. ❤ Which as you evidently have cited, decreased organ diseases and increases a proper healthy lifespan.
As someone that has worked shift work and also has irregular shifts, I must say that this is stuff I need to do more often. Thank you for sharing. It is easier said than done. Thank you for your service Randy! :)
Yes I can relate my husband a locomotive engineer has erratic hours .. very difficult to manage especially when our boys were little. Hard having family time but now empty nest a lot less stressful. We had no schedule he come and goes.. but I made sure we have decent food so this way our moods won’t fluctuate.. omg wait when PMS and Menopause collide .. finally light at the end of the tunnel when my husband retire .. now I make TikTok funny.

Every job has its own challenges. Police officers deal with stressful situations every day throughout their work life, and it may cause negativity in their personal lives, especially when they have cases involving kids. I have huge respect for police officers; they are always at risk, and because of them, we are safe and can sleep well. Thank you so much for the video, and God bless you, Mr. Randy.

Wish my husband had followed some or all of those steps. Twenty five plus years of shift work, some times doing doubles, suffered a stroke. Forced into early retirement after that. Always thought it was no big deal , effectually it caught up to him.

It’s true, it’s not natural. People do what they can to cope but it’s just very hard on a person. Thanks for the input.

💯 accurate!
I think its actually more than that. I think I have lost more than that :(
