Everyone hates on the Card system but as a lover of card games I found it so fascinating to make decks to take on new threats and Riku was a nice reward for finishing Sora's story.

Same. I felt the same way. 😎 Too many KH fans slept on this because of the card system but don't understand that it's part of the story and takes place AFTER the events of KH 1.

One thing I appreciate about this game is that we get to play as Riku for an entire story! I also enjoyed playing as him in DDD but omg his final boss battles were tough lol.

I prefer Riku's story because I feel it is better written than sora's and it also has given us a better look at Riku's personality.

Hey a sidenote if you asked me about what the true nature of relationship of Sora and Riku , I know that they are best friends, etc. but there are certain moments I feel they are more like brothers and there are certain moments I feel like Riku is acting like if he is Sora's older brother and he might have admitted it indirectly in dream drop distance.

  • @cantrip7

I vastly prefer Sora's gameplay on GBA. It's not super balanced, but I find it much harder to break than Re:CoM, and it still poses a challenge on boss fights. Re:CoM's arenas are way too big. Basic attacks and early game sleights whiff constantly. Battles feel longer cuz of how often enemies jerk slightly out of range.
Riku feels better in Re:CoM with the added sleight variety, and the slanted and corkscrewed movements of his attacks make more sense in 3D. However, the Duel mechanic overwhelms. Riku's side should focus on combat fundamentals. So I'm kinda split. I think the GBA is more tightly designed, but Re:CoM is more immediately fun.
I think Re:CoM does an admirable job adapting the cutscenes, but I prefer them on GBA. Always people talking in rooms standing awkwardly far apart. And very wordy, too. They work better with sprites and at reading speed. "I'm me, he says!" sounds better when you read it to yourself, you know? Lol.

Quick Save is there for when you told your mom "5 more minutes" but it's been 10 and your last save was 3 floors back. It simply acts as a temporary stopping point so you can turn off your Gameboy; once you turn it back on you'll go back to that save state, but you will lose your progress unless you Quick Save again or drop a permanent save in a Moment's Reprieve room or out in the hallway.
Also, I like both games, but absolutely prefer the GBA version to Re:CoM.

You script your videos and present them in such a way that anyone who is trying to understand the series can actually understand it! I never knew this about Riku after watching some let’s plays on my first watch and this video taught me a lot of things I didn’t know and clarified some of things that were foggy in my memory! I feel the GBA version lacking voice acting did add to the feeling of isolation the game was going for. The GBA version's music is very ominous and I think helps with the game's atmosphere of thinhs just feeling "off" and not right.
I also feel it works better as a bridge to 2 for emphasing Sora's physical growth in the year since KH1. The GBA game just reused voice clips from KH1 so he still sounded and looked young, making the jump to 2 where we see he has physically gotten taller and sounds older more impactful. It can be a bit jarring to see the baby-faced Sora from KH1 so shortly after that story wrapped up but sounding much older.
Obviously this couldn't be helped as Sora's English VA recorded this some time after KH2 when he went through puberty but it is something I feel is sadly less impactful if you play Re:COM instead before KH2.
I do love the story of COM and seeing Sora actually act a bit selfishly at times trying to find Naminé over listening to his friends he had been travelling with. It's cool seeing someone talk about it a bit more at length.

The GBA version is best and I don't see how the remake can be better unless you just dislike the graphics of the GBA one. GBA feels a lot less grindy and is much faster. Also the combat works way better

Okay, I was there for the original release of CoM, KH2, AND KH2FM+. I loved CoM and KH2, so I was shocked when KH2FM+ was announced with a remake of CoM. I moded my PS2 and played KHFM in anticipation for the release of KH2FM+. I felt like reCoM was truly a huge DLC type prologue to KH2FM, the save files interacted with each other. It feels like a cheap remake because it was basically a free remake that was the new prologue to KH2FM. I was severely disappointed when reCoM was released in America as a solo game and honestly even more disappointed with it was still pushed as a separate game in the hd collections. ReCoM belongs as the start of KH2FM IMO and I'm sad the majority of the public will never see it that way. ReCoM being is own solo release outside of Japan feels like if Nintendo tried to sell Bowser's Fury as a solo game. ReCoM will always be massive DLC expansion for KH2FM in my mind. You can still see reCoM Sora and Riku in the KH2FM box art.
I never see anyone bring this up in retrospectives and I think it's an important part of kh history.

So to say what I said in the premier for this (And to explain more about it since I don't have a low character limit) in the og PS2 version of RE:COM KH2 keyblades were in the room of rewards instead of 358/2 days ones, (The org XIII member cards were not changed) in Olympus you got monochrome instead of total eclipse, in neverland you got follow the wind instead of Midnight Roar, in traverse town you got hidden dragon instead of Maverick Flare and in destiny islands you got photon debugger instead of two become one, (Bond of flame was unchanged) and you just needed to beat Sora's story to get them instead of having save data for KH2.

I've played through the GBA CoM a couple of times and wanted to try the PS2 Re:CoM, but ended up disappointed in how the combat and card system translated to the PS2 and 3D environments. I felt like with the GBA version the overall card battling mechanics worked much better for the 2.5D sprite environments. The movement is fluid and meaningful, but limited, and that's a good thing. With less freedom of movement it allows the card mechanics to shine without having to focus on an extra dimension of movement and camera controls. I feel like Re:CoM should have just used the OG action RPG battle system from KH 1.

  • @thehighlandfox
    @thehighlandfox 10 месяцев назад +2

I played Re: CoM as part of the collection just so i could understand the story before heading into KH2. I really didn't like the game that much on my first playthrough mainly because I was still trying to play it like KH1 and every boss gave me way too much trouble, but I did really like the story. after a while I revisited the game to go for 100% since I'd done it for every other game in the collection and was pleasantly surprised, once I actually learned more about how the game worked and started experimenting with new sleights I had a lot of fun, and the story was even better on a second playthrough, I love CoM Sora's character and Riku's story is also incredible and Marluxia was a really cool villain. long story short once I learned to adapt to the card mechanic I used to hate I can now appreciate it even if I don't prefer it over regular KH gameplay and I learned to really love this game and can now say its underrated

    Pretty good Video
I played the gba version much in the past when it came out back then. I saw an article which explained the game and was very hyped for it, because I liked kh1 very much. I have beaten it back then multiple times and had very much fun with it.
For now I had started to beat all KH Games from the complete edition on my switch on 100%.
KH1 is done and I'm currently on Re:CoM. The biggest difference besides the grafic is that the fights are now in 3D which is a important factor. I think that evading attacks is easier in Re:CoM than it was in the gba version. Besides that I think there is no important difference and both versions are worth playing. I understand the problems some players have with the card system, but I'm happy that this was never a problem for me.
So for all which has maybe never tried it or stopped it before completing the story, just give it another try. It may be not that easy to get in the card system but the game is worth it

One thing that should be heavily considered is Sora's voice.
I know they didn't have much of a choice, but Sora's voice being deeper in Re: Chain of Memories both doesn't make sense (CoM takes place literal hours after the final events of KH1), and kinda spoils that surprise in KH2.

I actually think the original gba version is better, simply because it doesnt look like a lesser KH1.
Being on a weaker system means that everything just appears more unique, the sprite work is different, the card system plays more like a beat em up rather than a clunky kh1, the soundtrack has a different vibe to it.

21:04 This style of Quick Save was quite common on the GBA and was pretty much the predecessor to the DS's Sleep Mode, and isn't actually a true save.
Also suprised this wasn't brought up at all but even the earlier bosses are a lot more dangerous in Re:Chain with my favorite example being Axel's Flame Wall. In GBA it was a slow moving attack that was easy to see coming and easy to avoid just hide in a corner and/or dodge roll through, but on PS2 it has an obtuse tell and is very hard if not impossible to dodge roll through, either needing a 0 or a higher value sleight to beat it. And Larxene being even more dangerous, essentially being on the level of KH2 Crit Roxas if you don't use sleight spam, especially with a lightning attack that is essentially RNG to dodge as just one of her basic attacks.
