Growing Oaks - A LIVE & Willamette University Collaboration

In 2022, LIVE’s Executive Director Chris Serra read about Growing Oaks, a Willamette University student-led organization, in a local newspaper. Among many other efforts in advocacy and education, this group was collecting acorns and nurturing them into saplings to then distribute to community members. LIVE was encouraged by their work and saw an opportunity to help expand these efforts by connecting Growing Oaks to the wine industry - a pivotal player in the legacy of this keystone species.
The Oregon White Oak, which houses over 200 wildlife species, is rapidly declining. Less than 3% of historic oak habitat remains today. With roughly 98% of the remaining native population (in the Willamette Valley) being on private land, vineyards hold a lot of responsibility and power in the destiny of this keystone species.
