- From Episode 11 of our Discovery Channel series "Rocket Science": The Apollo Lunar Module was so fragile it could only be fully flight-tested in space. That was the mission of Apollo 9, whose crew put the craft through a full shake-down flight in low earth orbit a few months before the first lunar landing. Spaceflight is risky business.. much respect to astronauts and all those that make it happen 👍
Thanks for this video
Great video, but both the narrator and Robert Godwin made the same erroneous statement: "They had no way home, other than a successful docking with the Command/Service module." That's not correct. Gumdrop and Spider didn't have to "dock" for all three astronauts to safely return to earth; they had to make a very close rendezvous. As stated earlier in this very video, Schweickart and McDivitt could spacewalk from the LM to the CM in case the docking procedure failed. That's why he hand holds are on the outside of the Command Module. One of the main goals of Apollo 9 was to prove that this spacewalk could be safely accomplished.
Interesting. I wonder if another spacecraft could've docked with it and somehow used it for some purpose, like the orbital lab the Apollo Applications Program considered?
They have got to get back in business!!!
