  • REBOOT! The Museum of Flight in Seattle asked to include my old video on this in their new Apollo exhibit, and when I looked at it I decided it was too embarrassing. So I redid the video, and added onboard audio! And am happy with the outcome so decided to take the old one down and put this one up instead. Enjoy! (Also, forgot to add an onscreen edit: I KNOW APOLLO 10'S LM IS IN SOLAR ORBIT AND APOLLO 9 OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T GO TO THE MOON!)

When I was a young boy (7) and in awe of the space program I had an uncle who was a Grumman engineer working on the LEM program out at Bethpage Long Island. For my birthday he took me into work to see one a mock-up of the LEM. The real deal was being built in a clean room so I couldn't see the actual LEM up close but even as a small boy looking at a mock-up it looked so small and fragile. I can remember it as if it were yesterday. Thinking back it was one of the best birthday gifts I ever received and a very fond memory.

Imagine taking a nap in that capsule and when you wake up, you realize you are on the Moon again, amazing.

one of my all time favourite Apollo moments was the eva performed in trans Earth coast by Ken Mattingly and Charlie Duke (Apillo 16). This was to recover film from the lunar survey camera mounted in rhe side of the service module, prior to jettison and re entry. After 3 days driving around in the lunar rover with John Young, Charlie got to stand in the open hatch, he said he could look over his shoulder and see the moon in one direction and the Earth in the other! I mean as if the man hadn't had enough thrills already, he then gets to do that. Lucky bugger!! There's brilliant 16mm film of the whole thing.

Just came on your page; enjoyed the video. I was ten when Apollo 11 landed. I'm a science teacher now, and I try to tell the story of the early days of spaceflight. When I see someone your age enthusiastic about what came before, I smile. Well done!

In 1997 while living in Orlando I was hired as an extra for From the Earth to the Moon. I was leaving the studio office where I interviewed, and on my way to the parking lot I cut through the deserted soundstage.Sitting there in all it's glory was the LM that was to be used for the interior shots in the series. Since the place was deserted, I thought, "why not"? I climbed up and in through a panel in the rear and stood up in the LM cockpit. Looking around I saw two EVA backpacks. One said LOVELL. The other said HAISE. It was then I realized I was in the LM cockpit set that was used for Apollo 13! I couldn’t believe where I was standing. This was before cellphones, so I could not document this moment, all I could do was stand there in that piece of history and take it in. Against all urges I touched nothing. I just stood in there for minutes, and thought of Hanks and Paxton and Bacon and the film magic that had been made in that tiny piece of movie prop, and the film moments that had thrilled millions in movie theaters around the world, me included. And I had it all to myself. After several minutes of pure bliss, I realized that it was time to go. I carefully climbed out and left the quiet soundstage and went to my car. As I drove away, I realized that my childhood dream of being up and close with an Apollo LM had come to pass, or at least as close as I would ever get.

My absolute favourite picture is the one Mike Collins took of Eagle coming up from the moon with the Earth in the background.

Andrew Chaikin's book, "A Man on the Moon" is a must read. Much of the series "From the Earth to the Moon" came right from his book. I can't imagine the smell the poor Navy diver was slapped in the face with when he opened the door on the Apollo 8 capsule. It's mentioned in the book.

Just imagine how cramped it was when the three astronauts of Apollo 13 were sequestered in their "LEM lifeboat".

Was at Redstone Arsenal this summer taking my kids to Space Camp. They have one of the trainer LMs there that you can take a peek into. Not to mention that they have not one, but two Saturn Vs there and a Saturn B1. They also have all the parts of the Saturn V broken into constituent parts that you can look at in detail and the Apollo 16 CM.

Love your channel! Thanks for tracking down all these little space history tid bits. Love the stories, perspectives and enthusiasm. I look forward to more. I've been lucky enough to work out at KSC the last 2 years. I still pinch myself going to work. It's like my Disney World. Your channel gives me more cool easter eggs to try to spot out there. Keep it up!

The Apollo 16 jump salute is my favorite. :). From the Apollo missions to be precise. All time favorite is a shuttle shot.

Just stumbled onto this channel and I love it. I was born the day Apollo 7 splashed down. My wife was born the day Apollo 16 splashed down. The space program was an integral part of my young life. I have memories of watching the launches of Apollo 16 and 17 and all of the shuttle launches up to and including the Challenger disaster.

Now with all that said, imagine how they felt on Apollo 13... Where all 3 men had to live in it to survive for 4+ days, with it powered down almost entirely aside from a small fan to move air around & radio communications...and with temperatures in the cabin around 40F. Seeing this picture from Apollo 11 and how small the LEM was, really puts Apollo 13 in a new perspective.

Even more impressive was that James Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert lived for 4 days in that LEM cabin after the accident CSM Odyssey forced the crew to use Aquarius as a lifeboat.
