  • SO, I wanted to build shelving for my kids playroom closet and honestly I could NOT find an easy beginner tutorial ANYWHERE! Then we finished our basement and I built both my kids closets out a year ago and gained some on the job knowledge. This closet still needed finished out so I thought I would make a quick tutorial in case someone else is looking for the same thing!
    Materials:
    Lowes has precut and bull nosed shelving that is quite helpful.
    www.lowes.com/pd/97-in-L-x-0-...
    5 - pieces of molding
    1x4x8 primed mdf
    1 - Piece 1x2x8 primed trim for the brace
    Finish nailer this is the one I have - amzn.to/36ocete
    Nails - 2" 18 guage nails
    Loctite glue - amzn.to/2ZTGqdb
    Zinsser bullseye primer - amzn.to/2FlWk72
    Zinsser bullseye primer TURBO - www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-B...
    Rustoleum paint - amzn.to/36BV4by
    _________
    These will be the perfect for large toy bins and I am super excited to start organizing and putting away all the clutter. MY NEXT PROJECT will be a huge barn door to cover this closet! I have some amazing plan and I am pretty exited to get it done!
    As always let me know if you have any questions!
    Super easy and fast!
    That’s it! Thanks for watching - don’t forget to like and SUBSCRIBE It makes my day and helps me keep doing these videos. THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!

I think this shelf would be bad ass to add to the nursery!!! Greetings from the other coast, Dirty Jersey out!!!! 2:58

    This was a great help as I'm trying to layout my linen closet. I envisioned doing the extra support just like you did so thank you for validating my thought for creating the brace from wood instead of buying a bracket to hold it. I have one question. Where the side shelf and the long back shelf come together, how did you support the side joins, or did you? In the video it looks like you had an extra support piece but I couldn't tell how it was done. Thanks for sharing! :)

    • @EternalHarvestDecor
      @EternalHarvestDecor  3 года назад

      You are so welcome! this is a great question, I should have showed that a bit better in the video. I didn't add an extra 45 brace below the seam (but I think I should have) I just used a 1x4 underneath glued and nailed to each side. It was strong and maybe it would be over kill to add more but I think I would if I build them again, which I will. HAHA good luck!

One great thing about barn doors, is that you can actually make it any size you want. I had a 50 inch entrance from my Master bedroom to my walk in closet, and i made two barn doors. I was surprised myself how it turned out. Anyhow, great video, thanks for sharing.

    Can I ask why you chose 45 degrees for your brackets? I imagine the angle should be changed according to the shelf's width but is there a way to calculate that or just trial and error?

    • @EternalHarvestDecor
      @EternalHarvestDecor  4 года назад

      So the angle would stay the same but the length would change of the shelf was deeper. A 45° is the easiest to calculate and anytime I need a brace on a table, pergola or anything I throw in a 45. 😉 it it’s deeper then the board would just be a bit longer. Hope that makes sense

    Hi. This is a great video--thank you for making it! Quick question: for the middle bracing, did you also fasten the molding to a stud? What do you do if (as I imagine is common) the stud isn't centered in the closet? Seems like it would look pretty bad off center...
    Thanks for any help!

    • @EternalHarvestDecor
      @EternalHarvestDecor  3 года назад +1

      Great question and thanks for watching! I did not actually nail into any studs at all, the glue and nail into drywall is plenty. If you’re planning on loading the shelves with more heavy items I would do a vertical brace that attaches to the front from floor to ceiling. I added the braces mostly to prevent sagging since these are pretty long. Hope that helps!

How can I be sure to reinforce and make them extra stong for clothes rack and heavy items on the shelves?

  • @blairdawson
    @blairdawson 3 года назад

    How did you support the left and right ends of the long shelves where they but up to the return shelves ? The ends aren’t resting on the cleats.

    • @EternalHarvestDecor
      @EternalHarvestDecor  3 года назад

      So in the corner its easier because you can add cleats to 3 walls, so it is braced on 3 sides of the shelf where it buts up against the wall, if that makes sense. The long front shelf only had 2 cleats the wall at the left side and the long back wall, so it needed an extra cleat in the middle to add some extra support. Also because it was extra long I felt it needed something to brace the middle to prevent sagging. Hope that helps.

    For sure that particle board shelf is not going to last, and will bend and bow, and the fact you didn't run it all the way to the end, you'll be ripping that out in a couple years, if not already.... I would have bought 3/4 plywood and be done with it. You could then cut it as a U shape, and then add some softwood trim edging ending all the way to make it look pretty. The middle support makes it look like a 70's closet.

      HAHA well we are all learning and doing our best and unfortunately RUclips wont let you edit a video after its been published so there are so many times I publish and think I have it, only to see later that I made mistakes. Oh Well, thanks for watching anyway. Im getting better and better at production but man its SUPER time consuming. haha

    Just imagine what you could do with a man for a husband!

      Haha! I think I’ve done a pretty good job showing I don’t need a man to accomplish anything 👏🏼

    How can this be diy beginner friendly? I don't have a miter nor space for small machinery.
    Also I highly recommend you REMOVE the annoying background music. It covers your voice and very distracting!

      gee thanks for the kind remarks, in my experience most beginner diys have a few tools to begin with but if you are looking for some recommendations I can totally help with that. A miter saw is a must and a brad nailer as well. Thanks for watching

    Bug poop primer is some pretty awesome stuff. It’s also kinda expensive. Personally, for a beginner video, I’d have painted the shelves and supports outside first with a roller and a can of the stuff - it covers a greater surface area, it’s cheaper than the aerosol version and doesn’t require the American Psycho plastic sheeting or all the PPE. Great video though.
