This elevator more than likely has 2:1 roping, the elevator runs slower but carries more weight. Unlike 1:1 roping where one end of the hoist ropes attach to the cab, other onto the counterweight 2:1 one end of the hoist rope is anchored to the top of the shaft, down to the elevator cab looping over a compensating sheave top of the cab back up to the machine sheave loops over the counterweight compensation sheave, back up, anchored to the top.

VERY nice elevator! Either your date is inaccurate, or Dover came at a later date and worked on it. Dover wasn't a company until 1955.
