I loved this story, and the art of Pepe Moreno. I loved his work in Rebel, also. Back I was deep into Heavy Metal and Epic magazine. I miss both of those mags. I learned so much from them both, and was exposed to art and artists that I'd never seen before. Those were the days.
Marvel played itself to the Nth degree shutting down Epic right around the time Vertigo was taking off. I don’t think I’d still be a comic fan if it wasn’t for the art, stories, and creators published in Epic. There’s so much more for the medium to offer - Chris
I remember reading this when it came out. I have fond memories of it, and now I need to dig these copies out of storage and re-visit them. Thanks for the discussion and reminder!
We aim to deliver the deep dives from comics of yesteryear! They’re tremendously fascinating and lingering far longer than comics of today. Thanks for listening!! - Chris
Hey, thanks for the kind words! Glad this episode was a bright spot in your day. We feel like so many of these ‘80s comics have not been discussed enough… so we’re trying our damndest to make up for that! :) - Steven
If you REALLY want your mind blown by a serialized story from Epic Illustrated, look up Abraxas and the Earthman. (or the collected edition if you can find it)
Oh, I adore Rick Veitch!! He is SO underrated and perhaps the ONLY person who could have followed Moore, Bissette & Totleben on SWAMP THING and done so insanely well. Talk about some intimidating footsteps to follow… Yikes! Veitch is one of the greats - thank you for reminding me about ABRAXAS! I am familiar with the existence of it, but I’ve never read it and always wanted to. Consider it added to our list for the show! - Steven
Nice one Chris and Steve.. I don't remember this book growing up, the art kind of reminds me of Air Tight Garage / Heavy Metal. Love the saturated colors, and also how the color palette moves from panel to panel. That kind of ink / gouache color application especially the gradients and cross hatching reminds me of Möbius. Cool book.
Glad you dug the episode! Thank you for commenting, too! And yeah, good call on the Moebius/Heavy Metal vibe… that was totally one of my very first thoughts upon seeing this, as well. Moreno’s work here is extraordinary - glad we could get a few more eyeballs on it! - Steven
Epic Illustrated was Marvel's answer of sorts to HEAVY METAL magazine. I still have a number of issues and it was a great experiment by Marvel. Really great stories and art in those issues, especially GENERATION ZERO.
Yeah, seriously! This comic is pretty much the definition of “obscure” and that’s so crazy when you look at how gorgeous the art is. Glad you enjoyed Chris’ invocation of the great Hugo Pratt & CORTO MALTESE! - Steven
I've been trying to find this for a few years. Any copy online is a little pricy, but I may have to bite the bullet. This and rebel both look astounding.
Yeah, thanks for the suggestion. I’ve seen the cover and some of the interiors from REBEL - it does look super dope! I’m sure I will check it out at some point when I need another Moreno fix. - Steve
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSS A NEW EPISODE OF COMICS ROT YOUR BRAIN I've been going thru CRYB withdraw to the point where I was going to build a time machine and just go back to the 80s and get these comics THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU CHRIS AND STEVEN for yet again saving the day
I still think that building a time machine to go back to the ‘80s is an excellent idea, tho - if you’re successful, please let us know so we can hitch a ride with you! - Steven
@@tomdulski3729 You were lucky to get the paperback while you could! I have a feeling they didn’t print too many of these puppies. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in the wild. - Steven
Great video! I've loved this since first seeing it in Epic illustrated when I was about 10, too young really but I just loved the artwork! How did you get a digital version? I'd love to have one.
It was serialized in Epic Illustrated magazine issues #17 - #23. It was also collected in a single edition and you can find some of those on Amazon or eBay but they’re kinda expensive. Might be cheaper to find copies of those Epic Illustrated issues. - Steven
HEY STEVE AND CHRIS, DO YOY GUYS SELL A T-SHIRT OF THE COMICS ROT YOUR BRAIN LOGO THAT YOU GUYS USE FOR THE SHOW? IF YOU DID I WOULD TOTALLY BUY IT AND GET MY FRIENDS TO BUY IT TOO🤩😎🤪🖤💜💕
Thank you for asking - much appreciated! Chris and I have discussed merchandise and we plan to have some soon - probably a shirt and a beanie. Maybe even an over the shoulder bag that’s exactly comic book-sized! Stay tuned… We’ll definitely let everyone know as soon as any of it’s available! - Steven
We’re working on it. Maybe by the end of the month they’ll be available here on the CRYB YouTub channel page and our website www.comicsrotyourbrain.com

Playing the video now. The right pick me up to a long day. I really appreciate long conversation formats on interesting comic book topics.

I know the Abraxas story, I didn’t get to read it all b/c I have gaps in my Epic collection but it deserves a review for this show! - Chris

Generation Zero? Hell yes, great to hear someone talking about it. Also, kudos for the Hugo Pratt "Corto Maltese" reference.

I’d consider hunting down the Epic Illustrated single issues. They might be easier to find and certainly less expensive - Chris
@@ComicsRotYourBrain Actually, the $60 collection might actually be cheaper at this point.
@@terribled Wow, that’s crazy. Well… It’s worth it!

If you like this Pepe also did a comic called REBEL while not quite as good as this it's still light years ahead of most other stuff.

It's not lost, I can see my copy of the collected edition on the shelf from here. :P
😂😂
Uh… and your shelf is hidden in the netherworld?
I only had the last issue as a teen but loved it, I went back years later and bought the TPB to finally get the whole story

Ah. I still recommend getting the Epic issues ‘cause of the John Bolton and Kaluta stories.

The enemy army is clearly just him using early 80's East German army photos and illustrating them
@@tomdulski3729 Yeah, that’s a good point. I could totally see that.

Yes! I feel like that gives the work a verisimilitude that him making up future army uniforms would fail to deliver on. - Chris
