Wow, this is such a bad DIY video. Please ppl, do not follow this.
What they are showing is joints repointing.
    1. Go deeper into the mortar joint to repoint it.
    2. Do not use the stuff they are showing. Actually, never buy your mortar from a place like Lowes, they simply do not have repointing mortar. The consistency of repointing mortar should not stick to the tools, the consistency they are showing is for when you are building a new brick wall. Use the less water possible. The mortar will have a sand-like consistancy with some cohesion to it.
    3. Be sure put enough water to the repointing zone. The existing mortar as well as the brick must absorb the most water it can, and you can rest assured that brick can hold a lot of water. Please be careful to do this job during the summer, because the brick will hold water for a long time and if cold temperature are coming, it may cause freezing inside the brick and damage it.
    4. Don't splash mortar on the whole brick like they are showing, you will just stain or worst damage your brick (especially if you used their mortar). One has to have the right repointing trowel to do the job. Be careful when applying mortar into the joint, and compact it well.
    4. With the right consistency (sand-like), couple of minutes after it's been applied, it should be possible to work the joint finish with a round bar or the tool you want to make a visually pleasing finish.
    5. Keep the mortar wet for the next couple of days with a spray of water from time to time. The mortar need water to have a good hydration of the concrete. It will make joints that are a lot more sturdy.
