- An Unshaken special episode featuring a Sperry Symposium presentation by Jared Halverson. In it, he discusses the difficult balance between orthodoxy and harmony, or between the First Great Commandment (loving God) and the Second Great Commandment (loving our neighbor). What do you do when those two imperatives seem to come into conflict? Whether in political issues, interfaith dialogues, generation gaps, or conversations between Church members and former members, how do we prove these contraries?

If by change someone you love moves too far from either side of the path, and falls off the cliff. Let’s be first responders, not judges.
Be at that bottom of the cliff and bring that person safely back to the fold and let the judge of Israel decide what is best for him or her. Let us just love, that is our job as first responders.
We are to minister and bind up wounds.
Let’s be ministering Samaritans.
Oh my goodness this has been such a revelation to me today right in time to meet my family tomorrow for my father’s 95th birthday party … with them being not members of the church or religious at all and usually mocking me for who I am and what i believe. Thank you thank you brother halverson that was fantastic. Its been an answer to my prayers today of asking for heavenly assistance how to deal with tomorrow.

Witnessed this speech in person- it blew my mind. The same was true when I was first introduced to proving contraries by him. Bro Hal was right when he said that when you look for contraries, you see them everywhere. After listening to his talks and my own experience, I find we all either have a zeal for justice or for mercy and it isn’t until we embrace the other that we’ll be His people again. It’s Christ who marries justice and mercy together. Therefore, it’s only through Him that we achieve it. I hope Bro Hal gets called as a general authority and gives this talk in General Conference- we all desperately need to hear it.
Jared, I know what you taught is true. And it helps me to know how to be a better therapist, a better wife, and a better mother. i’m being trained as a Gottman marriage therapist right now. I have learned that relationship masters have a 5 to 1 positive to negative ratio of their comments toward each other during conflict. During the positive times the ratio of positive to negative is 20 to 1. The highly talented couples always are able to weave humor and connection through their conflict.

I was exhausted this evening, but then I came across your Unshaken special Episode: Harmony in Pursuit of Orthodoxy and found a place of learning and growing in just the place of my quandary. What a challenge it is to stay balanced and aware of those you come in contact with who are also God's precious children. Thank you for putting so much of your heart into helping those searching to find a place to start!! Kind of sad to be starting in old age, but as long as I live I hope to be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Thank You Jared for helping me feel like it is possible, always staying within the Lords' teachings. God Bless You
Great talk. Thank you. I was just reading the Oct. 2021 Gen Conf talk by Elder Renlund and he eludes to this same principle.
“Inspired by the example of his fellow Finns, my father chose to place his discipleship of Jesus Christ above all other considerations. The Finns were no less Finnish; the Russians were no less Russian; neither group abandoned their culture, history, or experiences to banish enmity. They did not need to. Instead, they chose to make their discipleship of Jesus Christ their primary consideration.”
This message made me think of Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, MLK, and countless women forgotten by history… “I destroy my enemies by making them my friends”…great leaders who understood this concept and brought to pass great changes in society.
I remember a quote by Joseph Fielding Smith buried somewhere deep in my earlier years files stating that if we ever err in judgment it should be on the side of charity. This was significant to me when serving as a RS President at BYU. Thank you Brother Halverson for your sensitivity to the unorthodox and helping us “straight arrows” to better love and understand them.
Such a tender mercy to stumble on this message. The Lord’s timing is divine. Thank you for sharing His message of unity and peace.

Wonderful presentation. This has been a wrestle of mine for sometime now.
It seems that the example of Captain Moroni was one where the orthodoxy and even the possibility of freedom was about to be lost. And in this case, harmony was not a possibility until the orthodoxy of freedom was once again established. Without freedom all other orthodoxy was lost.
Now it also appears that we are in an age where politically we are not so much left/right debate as it is establishment(kingmen) against freeman.
Our Ether 8 moment is upon us. And in this our Ether 8 moment, we as a people are reticent to acknowledge that a society of natural men almost automatically order themselves using secret combinations. This is a pervasive theme and orthodoxy in the Book of Mormon that has become silenced in being harmonious. While "conspiracy theories" need to be discerned carefully, still we ought to regard this portion of the Book of Mormon as meaningful and not deny it for sake of harmony or even perhaps simply popularity.
Again I express my appreciation Brother Halverson for this wonderful presentation and hopefully present some orthodoxy in the most harmonious way I know how 🙂

Near the end of your talk, I thought of Doctrine and Covenants Section 138 vs 36-37:
"Thus was it made known that our Redeemer spent his time during his sojourn in the world of spirits, instructing and preparing the faithful spirits of the prophets who had testified of him in the flesh; That they might carry the message of redemption unto all the dead, unto whom he could not go personally, because of their rebellion and transgression, that they through the ministration of his servants might also hear his words."
The orthodoxy was that the Savior could not go among the spirits who had already rebelled against Him and His proohets, but harmony (mercy) provided a way for others to do that.
Yes, the Spirit World seems to have similar socialality that may allow some to be more influential than others. Obviously the more we learn in this life the more we will be able to serve in the next.
Bro. you hit the nail on the head!!! Thousands are leaving the church exactly because of this! Bless your heart for taking this issue head on and guiding us through with wisdom.!
I am so grateful of you for teaching by the Spirit. With 7 children, children in law and grandchildren you have open my heart and eyes about how to navigate between justice and mercy. There is not enough thank you I can write to let you know of how I feel.
I don't know where you find the time, but I'm so grateful for the sacrifices you (and you family) make for all of us. You have changed the lives of everyone in my family and we all love you for it. My oldest granddaughter will be in your religion class at BYU this spring. She is beside herself with anticipation. It will be great preparation for her mission this fall. Thank you for this, Bro. Halverson. I have been struggling with this very issue in my own family. I want to love as taught by the Savior, and I don’t want to seem like I am accepting or condoning sin. Between this presentation and Sister Runia’s talk from the Oct. conference, I’m getting a better understanding of how to apply love and mercy and keep the lines of communication open, all while standing by the tree and inviting through both my testimony and my actions. Sister Runia made such a great point in her talk that none of us has Christ’s power to condemn and we don’t have His power to redeem. What he has given to us is the power to love. I hope you are feeling better. Thank you to you and your lovely family for the sacrifices it takes to put out these podcasts.
I watched this the first time alone and the second time with my hubby. It gave us pause to reflect on our relationship between ourselves, some family, and others and what/how can we "repair" damage w/o disharmony. We thank the Lord for His grace as we struggle to "digest" the core of your message: the balance b/t doctrine and harmony. I will need to listen often to this presentation to build on my grasp of its message. I can never thank you enough for your insight, your testimony, your wisdom and willingness to tirelessly share with God's children these profound truths. HUGS

Brother Halverson, we "feast" on the words of inspiration you have to share about the Gospel. Thank you for doing all you do. The living words of Christ and all the prophets and apostles take on a clearer understanding with the guidance you help provide.
I really appreciated the last five or 10 minutes or so of this talk. I think you did a wonderful job showing how difficult this really is when the rubber meets the road. President Holland recently talked about abhorring the sin and loving the sinner. Separating the value of a soul from the sin they are committing, will help us to choose the best approach and help that person to come onto Christ.
I am so grateful for your presentation. As always, I learned so much. Thank you for your sacrifice of your time and effort to continue to teach us how to walk and stay on the straight and narrow path following our Savior.

i’ve been trying to find a way to address some of my family members that are not members of the church about doing temple work for aunts, uncles and cousins that have passed on. I am very concerned that if I don’t address it correctly, I could compromise our relationship or even cast a shadow on their perception of our church doctrine. Thank you so much for your time and talent that you so willingly share. I am truly one that needs it and I’m grateful for it! 🥰😊

This is the way to build Zion and gather Israel. I remember giving a talk many years ago and describing the wrestle between two seemingly opposing doctrines in the scriptures, and subsequently using an S. Michael Wilcox quote to help clarify the answer was in fact to use both…that both apply. That Christ does both and is both. I knew it was both, but for years didn’t quite understand why or how. etc…and now it seems only fitting to have you, Bro. Wilcox’s nephew, bring this revelation and insight to light in a way I can clearly understand. Thank you for your years of wrestling and for bringing this to light and sharing, helping to pave the path forward. I sat giddy on the front row of this presentation at the symposium with my sister and my dad, and couldn’t help but feel this was a moment to remember. Thank you for helping us to! Praise God!

This has been a Blessing. I have a Calvinist Friend, and another Friend who have been very Open about how they Feel about my Beliefs, and all I keep getting that comes to Mind is. "If ye are not one ye are not Mine." This balance between Orthodoxy, and Harmony is Truly what matters the most, and that Verse in the Book of Mormon resonates with me like never before although I must admit I've only been a Member a few years now.

I love this way of thinking. I was taught this example in the temple when Adam is faced with the decision to keep the vertical law, or to remain with Eve and love her. I’m so grateful he chose Eve with the faith that they will find a way to make it back to God. A great example of how spouses should deal with differences.. God does have a right way for situations, but he wants spouses to do it together. And sometimes He will be patient with spouses not doing things the right way, but at least they’re doing it together and can be molded and find their way to the right way.
I'm really loving this! I came across it on YT when it was first posted by BYU. So invigorating! 40+ years ago i learned from Stephen R. Covey, Put God first anf He will tell you what comes second. It has been so helpful and seems to go along with what you are saying here about Orthodoxy and Harmony. Thank YOU so much for all that you do to givr us inspired instruction!

This is also my biggest striving, to maintain my covenants and belief in the fullness if the gospel and still hold esteem in the agency and love of all men. The first and second great commandments! This has been MY message and hope! I long to help bring Zion and the world to this balance!

This has helped me so much in my ministering, family relationships and just daily interactions with people from all walks of life. I have been a member of the church all my life and now, in my senior years, just feel like I am starting to really know and understand what this life is all about. Thank you so much for sharing your insight and helping me develop my own along the way.
This might be the answer to my many prayers. How to help my sons and daughters, come back to the church. I pray this is the inspired answer I am looking for. It is hard when as a parent I know the "right" and they don't see it, and they are kicking holes in the walls of our house, but maybe if I can foster a relationship that creates trust, then when I teach truth they will be more apt to listen and hear. As missionaries we first tried to build a relationship then teach the gospel. When things worked well that is what happened.

In data communication there is a principle, strict by the sender (orthodoxy) and permissive in the receiver (harmony).
I am having some difficulty finding a reliable name, it may be called the “Asymmetric Schema Principle”.
This would equate to erring toward orthodoxy for yourself, and erring toward harmony for others.
This is perfect wording and the way I try to walk because it’s how I’ve always perceived my Savior to be. So very Merciful to me.

Maybe you're too young to remember the show, Kung Fu, starring David Carideen. It was one of my favorite shows growing up, next to Star Trek. Anyway, Grasshopper was always told by his mentor, "Balance, Grasshopper." That concept has been a guiding influence in my life ever since. So much so, that several years ago, when I was studying the martial arts and preparing to become a Black Belt, one of the requirements was that we had to write a thesis paper. The style I was studying was Taekwondo, a Korean art. The title for my paper was..."Pilsung Through Balance." Pilsung is the Korean word for Victory. I just stumbled across this presentation and am early in watching it. I have a previous Bishop of our ward who is clear and vocal about hating the right and Trump in particular. He is openly critical of any Republicans when he teaches priesthood lessons. His wife taught RS two weeks ago and went on and on about Taylor Swift and her lover football star and how they are tremendous role models. I was taken aback as I have not watched or cared for Taylor Swift, the way she dresses, dances, rails against Republicans, and openly insults others who do not believe the way she does. I don't know anything about her boyfriend. When teaching a lesson on role models, my thoughts would be more like Elder Holland and his wife. I am struggling with what others are teaching in this Ward. I am not shaken just confused as a 70-year-old who has been on a mission, married in the Temple, married 43 years, raised a great family, 5 times HP group leader, two Bishoprics, countess times as GD teacher. As you can see I am probably in need of this presentation. I will respond after watching this talk several times to see if I get it.

PLEASE MAKE A NON-DENOMINATIONAL VERSION OF THIS! It's absolutely amazing. I want to share it with everyone I know, but I'm afraid that alot of people would reject it out of hand simply because a "Mormon" gave it. I have friends who have left the church, I have Evangelical friends. This is so important that the world should have it. Oh, that I were an angel, and could preach this to everyone on earth. ;^)
I had to look up the definition of “orthodoxy”. With the amount of passion that you gave to this topic I could not stop and ask myself if you’re having a personal issue or perhaps with a ward or stake leader? It’s not up to us to decide whether or not someone takes the sacrament. A bishop has the keys for that decision. You never once mentioned the gift of revelation. The spirit trumps horizontal and vertical. I would never put my children in front of a molester of any degree, and yes, even if it hurt that persons feelings or they left the church. I’m in the “Bible Belt” nearly my entire 64 years. What is going on in the state of Utah?

This is the crux of discipleship. As Bro Hal said, Christ is the perfect balance of both and thus is our calling to follow Him, to be one as He is. My question is, for a friend, if you are a hardcore Orthodox how do you gain some of that harmony? If you are hardwired to focus on the rules and people's feelings are immaterial to you, how does one gain some of that mercy?
Get on your knees and pray to ask for some of Jesus' mercy given to you until you understand it and feel it for others yourself,❤️🙏
Once you have experienced His love and mercy, then you can extend it to others. We can't give what we haven't received.

I love you, and I've loved listening to your Unshaken videos for almost 4 years now. I recently watched your recommended special episode “Harmony in Pursuit of Orthodoxy.” I think I got the essence of your wonderful message to default to mercy to preserve relationship on the way to unity with God unless prompted by the Spirit to use orthodoxy first. Yet I feel urged to share some feedback about two of the pictures you used towards the end of your talk, particularly the last one.
As you confessed your error in impulsively saying to a student “Just don't err”, you were grateful to revise your answer the next class time. However, to me, the picture you used at the end of your talk still says “Just don't err...or else!” It felt scary because I couldn't see the Savior's relentless redemption that you mentioned portrayed in the picture. I don't see my Savior going before me, shepherding me. I see a dangerous path, with my Savior behind me, bidding me walk ahead without Him by my side, with no hope on either side for rescue or survival if I should err. I do not like that picture at all and was sorry I had to see it at the end of your presentation. I don't think it fit the essence of your revised message at all.
Now I'm wondering if the idea of proving contraries has swung too far to one side and needs to be balanced more with some wisdom of the heart and soul for that journey along that strait and narrow path, like “Follow me.” “Walk with me.” “I will not leave you nor forsake you.”, D&C 84:88, etc. which offers more assurance than just a whisper from Isaiah.
The same goes for the political image. I don't see how political differences in ideology will ever be solved by facing each other trying to prove contraries until the enmity influence of the serpent on members of both parties is overcome by repentance and looking upward to Christ for a change of heart. I would love to see some angels floating above the donkey and elephant, and I think the rope in the picture could/should represent the serpent's role in it all as an influence interfering with the balancing effort.
Anyway, I want to erase or modify those pictures now in my mind; and if you used AI to design them, then I can better understand why I see only difficulty and danger and feel no soul nor hope in them. Your recent picture for 2 Nephi 31 on Unshaken shows the Savior leading the way on a path without the precipitous cliffs on both sides. I find that more enticing with love and assurance rather than so much danger and fear. I love this quote by Robert Vallet: “The human heart feels things the eyes cannot see, and knows what the mind cannot understand.” I suppose academics requires focus on the mind rather than intuitive feelings, but perhaps that's a contrary to be balanced also.
I've tried to give this feedback in as much love and truth as I can. You help so many with your gifts of intellect and scholarship and concern for people and their faith, especially in crisis. Thank you for that! Your gifts are a powerful influence for good. With much love and respect, a fan.

Most of this went over my head. Which in some ways worries me that I am not finding this balance you speak of. I have a hard time understanding what it is being asked to balance.

Thank you so much for this video. It's is extremely helpful! However, what I struggle with more sometimes is not the vertical or the horizontal. I'm supposed to love my neighbor as myself, I can't figure out how to balance those two things. I'm in a good spot between me and Heavenly Father, the vertical part. How do I love others AND myself? How do I prove the contrary between compassion/service to others and my own sanity/inner peace? I can't pour from an empty cup. 🤔
