    Great idea with the cloche baskets. I'm going to try putting them over where I spread my poppy seeds bc my cats love to go digging around where I've sown seeds at times. I had about 75+ huge Orental poppy that showed up last year, and I literally collected thousands of seeds from them. I also ordered varieties from BC this year. I bought 4 scabiosa plants last year, and they actually did better and grew over winter. I absolutely love them. They are just huge, so I bought Fama deep blue and Fama white seeds from Johnny's so I can make many more. I live in PNW 8b, and many things can over winter here. I'm also growing lots of Echinacea from seed. They say they don't usually bloom first year, so I'm sure after watching your video on them, I'll end up buying a few if I find the right varieties. You can never have too many.😊Thanks for sharing❤

    LOL! 😄 I hit the subscribe button when I saw you holding the black mesh trashcans. It's my first time watching one of your videos, but we are clearly simpatico!
    I have a bunch of those from the Dollar Store and I pin them down to keep the darn squirrels and raccoons from digging up newly planted perennials. I have too many plants to purchase the cute chicken wire cloches, so Dollar Store to the rescue!
    What a coincidence...right now all my cheapo cloches are covering heucheras too. Over the larger newly planted areas I spread bird netting and use the mesh baskets to help prop up the netting somewhat.

      Hi Marina, Ah yes, sounds like they "heaved" out of the ground. Happens with cycles of freeze and thaw. I had that happen to a few perrenials. The comments I've received indicate they like moist shade. I have mine in part sun/sun in a dry area. If they come back, I'll have to move them.

  • @SharkSandwich451

      Thanks so much! Yes they do prefer those conditions. I was pushing it with this spot hoping the japanese maple near them would shade them enough, but its isn't quite big enough yet. I will see if they come back, and if they do, I'll move them to a moist spot thats more shaded.

    Your property is so beautiful! I use the black trash containers over my plants as well. I added some drawer knobs that I had to the top so they look like cloches. I think I will try poppies again, as they are so pretty. A few years ago, I had no luck with them. I just hope I can find the seeds locally. They were hard to find.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Год назад +1

      Thank you so much! Oh that is genius! what a great idea to add knobs. They really do look like cloches that way. I'm sure you can find poppy seeds locally. I commonly see burpee hungarian blue at the home depot and lowes. They do benefit from cold stratification though. So you'll need to throw the pack in the freezer for a couple weeks to increase chances of germination. Otherwise, you can always try next season. Thanks for watching!

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Год назад +1

      Hi Kim, Poppies like a period of cold stratification. Part of the reason its most often suggested to sow them in snow. One reason is for the cold, which they benefit from. The other reason is due to the moisture, which helps them germinate. Since we weren't getting any significant snow this winter, I popped the seeds in the freezer for about a month to help with the cold stratification part, and hopefully now with the Spring rains we get germination 🤞 Hope this helps clarify.

    Hi! I watched this video with pleasure, now it's time to work :) I want to ask: usually poppies sow their seeds themselves and then many seedlings germinate. This kind of poppy doesn't reproduce like that? Thank you in advance.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Год назад

      Hi Alexa! yes Poppies do readily self seed. If you leave the pods to dry on the plant, the eventually crack open and drop their own seed. I collected seed pods and they hold hundreds of seeds. So to ensure I'll get them again, I sprinkle my collected seeds. Hopefully after a few years, I can let go of having control, and let them seed themselves lol

      Hi Sue! I'm hopeful about the invisible deer sticks (zappers). They are supposed to train the deer that they don't like your garden. They have these little scent pellets on them, that smell floral. If they sniff them, it gives them a zap (like a static electricity zap), and scares them off. And because they mostly travel in packs, if one scares, the others scare and follow as well. So far so good, but were heading into Spring/Summer, where I'll have lots of tempting things blooming. That will be the real test. I'll keep you posted!

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Год назад +2

      Hi Anna, The baskets work great! Because Poppies are pretty tall 24-48 inches on average, if you have a shorter variety it may work well in a pot. Otherwise when you sow them closely in ground, they sort of hold each other up (lean against each other). I hope this makes sense. Shorter varieties could work in a container, for example the california poppy apple blossom. I have winter sowed poppies before. That method also works great for them as they benefit from cold stratification, and love the cold winter weather to help get them going. With winter sowing, I didn't like teasing apart all the seedlings, and felt that they flopped a bit when transplanted. I figured I would go with direct sowing them going forward. Hi Steph! Excellent, informative video. That's what makes you stand out! I also noticed my new growth lamb's ear underneath all the dead growth. It seems to be coming up in separate plants, not all together. Is yours like that too? I really love this plant. It does so well for me, spread a lot in two seasons and I'm hoping I can transplant some of the separate plants if that's what I'm seeing.. When would be the ideal time to do that? I'm also in zone 6, Massachusetts. 6A for me. I guess we're just a little bit colder here. Thanks!

      Thank you so much for your kind words Lauren. Yes, that is exactly how my lambs ear is coming in. My guess is that as the foliage grows and the leaves get larger, it will look like one layered plant. I'm going to wait a few weeks to divide & transplant mine. While i do think it can be done now, I will be waiting a couple more weeks until night time temps are staying more consistently closer to 40 vs the low 30's we've been getting this week. Should you decide to divide them, and we get a freaky frost predication, you could always use empty plant containers / nursery pots, flipped over the plant with a rock to weight it down, until the frost passes. Shoud insulate the transplants enough for them to make it as they are pretty hardy perrenials. Hope this helps.

      @@HookedandRooted thank you so much for replying. I'll definitely wait. Our spring weather can be so unpredictable.
      After your video I look through my seed packets and found pom pom poppies! I immediately put them in the freezer! I'll wait a few more weeks on those too. I'm so excited!

    Hi Steph!
    Thanks so much for this video. Quick questions regarding poppies - have you ever seed started indoors for poppies and are they invasive ?
    I am planning on growing them this year!

      Hi Anu! I have never started them indoor. I have only started poppies using the winter sowing method and the direct sow method. While I don't think the varities I've grown are invasive, they do readily self seed. So if you let them dry out and they seeds slip out, they could germinate and continue on in your garden. The seedlings are easily enough to weed out. Try them out, they are beautiful and worth it in my humble opinion 🥰

    I have those same baskets for covering tender plants that get eaten! I love them! Thanks for the reminder! Gotta start pruning my hydrangeas! Take care!

    I meant to ask, do you cover the poppy seeds back up with mulch or leave it off?

      Hi Michelle, They need light to germinate. So you just scatter them and leave them.
