  • It’s the question I get most at this time of year, and YES for gardeners in zones 6-8 I think it is too late. Watch this video to learn why.

    Last year I planted my poppies alongside all my other plants.
    They were suppose to grow to be 3 feet tall with 4 inch flowers. They grew 6 inches tall with 1 inch flowers.. in august. LOL.

      They aren’t very heat tolerant which is why they need to be sown in winter.

    This is funny, I direct sowed poppies last February based on your video this time last year (I'm in Angier). They actually bloomed, albeit the bloom life was really short but they were gorgeous... thanks to your experiement!

    Hi Brie. I live in Central MD., zone 7a. I had Calif. poppies growing last year and some of them started new plants in about Sept./Oct. We've had a similar winter as what you've been having, i.e. a lot snowfall, ice, freezing temp., etc. I noticed that my self-sown Calif. poppies died, most likely, due to the winter weather. For this year's flower gardening, I sowed my poppy seeds in early Jan. From now on, I plan to sow seeds for poppies, etc. in mid-Dec. Sowing in early Jan. can be good enough. Sowing in late Jan. can produce pretty minimal results. I plan to experiment to see if self-sown Lauren's Grape poppies can survive the winter weather if they have sprouted in early autumn.

      Hi, I'm from the same area.
      I sewn a whole lot back in my planter back in febuary/march. They are just now blooming. Kinda sucks bc I expected it to bloom well before my lilies bloomed. However both came up at the same time.

      @@LoopyAnh Hi. Are you talking about Lauren's Grape poppies or Calif. poppies? My Lauren's Grape poppies are just now beginning to bloom. I didn't grow any Calif. poppies this year, but I plan to grow a large amount of them hopefully starting next year. I've grown them before. My oriental poppies seem to be strictly a May-blooming flower, and then the Lauren's Grape poppies and the Calif. poppies are a part of what takes the place of the oriental poppies in my succession planting. However, sometimes the Calif. poppies might bloom earlier than June, e.g. in May, and maybe even Apr., but it depends on if I sow their seeds early (like late summer/early to mid autumn) and if I don't get very freezing temps. during winter.

      @regismonkton Papaver somniferum, California poppies, and orietnal.
      Only soniferium bloomed. However the others are right behind them. Shooting up the soon to be flowers.
      It surprised me as I walked out and noticed them. I never grew poppies but learned that it was pretty simple. So I grabbed some of the poppies seeds from the jar. As well as the other 2 at a store. Figured I'd learn something about such a controversial and popular flower.

    I direct sowed a packet of amazing gray poppies in November, thinking nothing would come of it (just sprinkled them in my garden around my cherry blossom tree and a pond), but a great many of them are nice little seedlings now, like the ones you have. However…… while I know this isn’t supposed to be done, I am going to be changing that pond out in the spring and I’m going to have to transplant most of them. I was thinking of just making very big, round, deep shovel insertions around each seedling so as not to effect the tap root, but any advice on how I should do this would be appreciated. I really would like to see them bloom, but mine is a fragrance garden, so I’m not too well-versed in the ways of poppies.

    • @BrieThePlantLady
      @BrieThePlantLady  2 года назад +2

      I’ve never had any success transplanting so I can’t give advice. I think the amazing greys are also annual so if you can leave them till they bloom they will die anyway.

      @@BrieThePlantLady I just meant, e.g. if my poppy seeds, which I sowed in early Jan. haven't sprouted yet, I know that they'll sprout pretty soon and they'll be a good looking mass planting by some time in May. I do plan to do a lot of experimenting, e.g. in regards to simulating a self-sowing.

    If i sowed in june (before watching your video) is there a chance that they will germinate, later, when the climate is more conduit to the poppies growing conditions? I live in Rosarito, MX but it will start to cool off in about October. I'm really hoping they will think they r self sowed and start to grow when the time is right. Crossing fingers.

    • @BrieThePlantLady
      @BrieThePlantLady  Месяц назад +1

      Probably not because they need light to germinate and the longer the seed is in the ground the more likely the seed will get covered.

    What about too much rain and not much sun? Should I just make sure the rain can drain from the soil and hope the daylight is enough!? Is it a bad idea if it’s rains too much to place my pots in my shed that has windows..?
    Thanks

    • @BrieThePlantLady
      @BrieThePlantLady  2 года назад +1

      These need full sun, so I don’t reckon end growing indoors ever. Even with windows there isn’t enough light. As for drainage, just make sure you have a soil that drains well and doesn’t stay water logged.
