    I am no plumber but I don't see a drip leg on their gas line..... that would def fail inspection and when/if they go to sell their house, they'll have to remediate that! In many places nowdays, you don't need one on your dryer or even stove (as many newer model's have features built in to eliminate debris in the gas lines) but a minimum of a 3" sediment trap must be installed for all gas furnaces and water heaters.
    Awesome HVAC videos by the way! ^_^

    I've taken a few HVAC classes and did some troubleshooting repair work on and off throughout the years. Never had the confidence to do an install on my own and that has stopped me from getting into the business. So much so that I decided to learn how to drive a truck and have been doing that for the past 15-plus years. You have really helped me out!! I have been waiting for a full install video and this is so informative from start to finish and has saved me from going back to take more classes and wasting more money on what I already know. I would have LOVED to have replaced mine by myself. Have a EPA cert for autos (took 20 min of study to get). Used to get refrigerant in 30lb bottles, but no longer can because I'm not affiliated with a shop. Appears you can order the stuff from online sites that is a Mexican brand where its still legal to manufacture. I was giving it serious considerations after calling about 2 dozen local HVAC companies and NONE of them had real R22 to top off my system. ALL of them wanted to mix refrigerants, which is both illegal and from what I've read will kill your compressor. Real shady people out there. Most of them were trying to pass off the compatible stuff as R22, until I really pressed them if it was real R22 and not the replacement stuff. None of them offered to pump down my system and replace it with the replacement stuff, which the only real option they should have offered if they didn't carry R22.
      I've read that many of these places are purposely not carrying (probably all in cahoots with each other) to force the customer to upgrade, and perhaps score a huge payday for them. Perhaps another reason they're doing mixing is secretly hoping it does kill off your still running R22 system so that you'll be forced to buy a new unit, with either R410A or perhaps even the newer R454B stuff (if you can find any actual systems in Jul 2024). All I know is dealing with these companies (in S. FL) can be exhausting and immensely frustrating. Finding an honest Joe in the bunch is next to impossible sometimes.

      @@dominicfaillo6547 That is covered already in the base house visit fee and/or per hour time & labor estimate. I believe he was talking about the uncharge for the refrigerant over and about that. And yes, the public can also purchase refrigerant online and have it delivered. We just have to check a box that says it is being purchased for someone else (with an EPA license) to use.

    I'm a little late to the show but glad I stumbled on to these videos. Question, as your camera took a break during the coil install, why did you struggle to install the coil and all associated parts together instead of removing the coil first to save some weight? I'm about 40+ years older than you and always look for the less strenuous way of accomplishing something. My 3 ton heat pump HVAC is acting up at a mere 17 years old, sometimes the coil freezes, sometimes the outside fan won't shut off unless I flip the breaker. New run capacitor that I keep here doesn't make a difference so I am taking a RUclips crash course on troubleshooting and repair while it still works.
    Thanks for providing information in easily (mostly) understood language, not too much HVAC jargon that the rest of us don't use on a daily basis.
    I subscribed so I can go through your library and try to match my units symptoms with a solution.

      same question

    • @LLCStreetwise
      @LLCStreetwise Год назад

      @@anthonynguyen8031 So I found out that both external condenser and internal fins need to use the same refrigerant. So the older is R22 technology, newer is R-410A and uses synthetic oil and higher pressure. So like me, you'd need to find a R22 condenser unit (most likely used) that would match up with the fins that are in the unit itself. You can find some used R22 condensers with the freon already in them, so whomever hooks it up for you wouldnt need to recharge the entire system with new freon, rather "release" the R22 that's already in it. All that is above my pay grade.

    I've done so much DIY on my old Goodman unit, from 1998, that I feel like I could pretty easily do everything in the video, up to and including buying the gauges and getting an EPA universal license just to legally buy and put in the refrigerant. The real issue for me is the whole permitting process. Where I am, in S FL, the consider an AC replacement as a "construction project" so they can make even more money on permitting fees. So if you don't pull a permit that you are running afoul of the law. And you will also decrease the resale value of the home if they cannot find a record in the permitting office that the system was both permitted and professionally installed by a licensed contractor. And if you do pull a permit, you will then be subjected to inspection. Which is even more $$$. All of this makes it really hard for the advanced and handy DIY homeowner to do the changeout themselves. Which I guess is the point. And forcing them to pay thousand extra to do something they could have done with the proper research and time as a hobby effort.

It might be a good idea to do another video series that shows how to plan out what an AC system needs because without the planning the installation information can't really be used effectively.

      @diyhvacguy  2 года назад +1

      Noted! I’m in the middle of filming a full install with a txv so I will explain that! Thanks for the tip. The txv will allow your system to run more efficiently, allowing the proper amount of freon in the system depending on the demand. I personally prefer the piston as there is just less to go wrong, but the txvs are used in a lot of systems and will lower your monthly electric bill.

      A heat pump will have a reversing valve. If you look down in the condenser, it looks like a cylinder with two perpendicular pipes coming off of it and some wires going to it. You don’t have to, as long as the coil is 410a. If it’s r22 you can’t run a 410a condenser. The r22 coils are not designed for the higher pressures unless stated on the coil itself.

    • @diyhvacguy

      Totally. I should make a video answering that question. I’ve replaced a condenser because the compressor locked up, and left the Evap coil and it ran for many more years. It all depends on if the compressor has a burnout or not. You’ll know if it has burnout immediately after opening the lines. It’s the worst burnt smell you’ll ever smell.

    What if that suction line was smaller due to the older unit specs, and the new 410a Coil calls for a 7/8 suction line, what would you do??? Run a new line set or keep the existing one and use a reducer?

    • @diyhvacguy
      @diyhvacguy  Год назад +1

      I’d run a new lineset. If it’s 3/4 lineset you could do a reducer, but I did one not too long ago that had 5/8 suction and the new one called for 7/8 so we had to pull a new line set

    • @diyhvacguy

      If your existing system is r22 only then yes, if it’s labeled r22 or 410a then you can more then likely just replace the condenser, but the r22 coils will not work with the higher pressure of 410a

    • @diyhvacguy

      No, you do need to flush the lines however, and the coil will probably need to be replaced unless it states r22 OR 410a on the case

    Great video. I have two questions please. Is this unit using the fixed orifice instead of TXV?
    Why do you have to change the orifice from .65 to .7?

    • @diyhvacguy
      @diyhvacguy  2 года назад +2

      Because the condensing unit dictates what orifice is needed. That’s why all new condensing units come with one stuck to the side of it. And yes this unit is using the fixed orifice. Much simpler and less to go wrong.

    So basically what you are saying is rather than find the leak you just opted to sell a new unit? Compressors usually get noisy when they're low on refrigerant and oil.
    I would have located the leak and given the customer the option of repairing or replacing. I'm sure you did that along with recovering the freon with a reclaiming machine.

    is it necessary to replace the ac coil?

  • @That1GuyOnYoutube
    @That1GuyOnYoutube 2 года назад

    I have a 20-year-old system that I want to change. My system uses r22, but I noticed a lot of newer systems use 410A.
    My questions are. Why didn't you completely change out the air handler? And if i just replace the evaporator coil like you did in this video, will it make it an issue with running 410a in an air handler that was originally r22? I'm just wondering if I should make sure the blower motor is replaced also and not just the evaporator coil.

    • @diyhvacguy
      @diyhvacguy  2 года назад +1

      The blower has nothing to do with the coil. It’s completely separate. If it were me I’d replace everything. The customer just didn’t want to replace the furnace that’s why we only replaced the coil and condensing unit. No harm is done if you just replace the coil and condenser. If you need help finding the right system, feel free to email me and I’d be happy to help. Stojicrepair@gmail.com

      Yes, it’s very hard to flush the Evap coil so my recommendation would be replacing. You can however flush the lineset and be ok. A burnout is pretty uncommon though.

    Is it possible to install a new unit directly up against the wall of the house? We have a small patio and the old unit is smack dab in the middle so we want to install a new one right up against the house. Even better, wish they made wall hanging units!

    • @diyhvacguy

      You could get creative and hang the condenser up height with some brackets, but for it to be up to code it needs to be at least 6” off the wall.
