The microphone covering was not typical, it was done on the fly because of 40 mph winds. They cut the foam out of their instrument cases and put it on to try to shield the wind. Check out Jimi's song Machine Gun, live at the Fillmore East 1-1-70 off the album Band of Gypsys to see the sheer magnitude of Jimi's other worldly talents.

One master influencing another…when SRV was asked about being compared to Jimi, he famously said Jimi is Jimi and I am Stevie. SRV was so humble and loved, respected, and paid tribute to all the old guards.
They're both great but Stevie was only a teen when Jimi died...he couldn't have been an influence on Jimi.

Jimi Hendrix is the GOAT, SRV knew that. Jimi songs, studio versions: 'Purple Haze', 'Voodoo Child', 'All Along the Watchtower', 'Are You Experienced", 'Red House', 'Little Wing' etc. It's a deep rabbit hole. Great reaction!

He adopted some of the changes Jimi made when he plays it live, now, and has said when he plays it it's essentially an homage toJimmy. But yes, most people know Bob Dylan wrote it & I would never pretend he didn't. He's written some great songs!

SRV's performance at Austin was much better too so yea there's that.
SRV was great in his own right, but Hendrix was his idol. He wore the same wardrobe as Jimi, played all of Jimi's music catalogue, and he himself said Jimi was the best ever. Also, Jimi was the first to do all of these things and didn't copy anyone. Jimi changed Rock music overnight in a small London Pub. Oh yeah, did you know that Jimi is left-handed, but plays his Stratocaster guitar upside down, and all of the chords backwards? Look closely at videos of Jimi playing, and you'll see his guitar is upside down. Insane! While growing up as a 9-year-old kid in Seattle, Jimi 's dad got him a cheap Bargain Basement guitar at the local Sears store. One problem, Jimi was a lefty, and almost all guitars, like Baseball gloves, and Golf clubs, are made for right-handed people. No problem, Jimi just flipped it over, and began to teach himself how to play everything upside-Down, and backwards. That right there alone, puts him on a different level than anyone else. Take 20 minutes, and listen to Jimi Hendrix at The Fillmore, play "Machine Gun" live. It's all you have to hear.
Let's not forget that Stevie played a guitar with 13's on the high E string, and completely manhandled those cables he called strings, bending and manipulating them with absolute control. I think that puts HIM on a level above everyone else! In regards to the idolizing of Jimi, Stevie actually had many influences---including all the great blues masters, especially---and in particular Albert King. Jimi certainly was an incredible player and musical innovator on the guitar, but I'm certain that he had heroes and influences too. Every great musician, artist, athlete, or whatever has/had role models, heroes, and influences in their lives. Anyway, Stevie will always be the GOAT to me. Also, he was WAY too modest of a man to have ever declared himself the greatest guitar player. That made him that much more of one to be admired. Anyway, I respect your opinion on the matter of the Jimi or Stevie argument. Blessings!
Jimi Hendrix did play a right-handed Strat left-handed and started the trend of putting the necks on guitars upside down to emulate him, but Jimi did restring the guitar where the E string was on top and the B string on the bottom so it chorded like a left handed guitar.
Right handed guitar flipped but it was re-strung to leftie. Making sure you have facts. Other players still thought it contributed to the Hendrix sound.
Reaching the highest fret on the high E is much tougher with the cut-out in the wrong place and the tremolo bar having to be left a turn in-threaded.
Loved them both. Hendrix was very creative and being a lefty, maybe that gave his guitar fingers the heads-up! SRV gives you blues and passion!! His guitar work was slamming and unsurpassed! Too bad we don’t have duets from these two GOATS.

I don't try to compare these two. SRV was incredible, no question, but Jimi will always be my favorite. You should check out the long, studio version that nobody ever reacts to: Voodoo Chile (not Voodoo Child Slight Return), the 4th track on Jimi's Electric Ladyland album. 14 minutes of pure bliss!

I love them both...Jimi was a little more of "throw everything at you at once"...SRV seemed more controlled with clean crisp notes but still fast, accurate, and the channeled soul was just unbelievable with both of them and both hardly ever played a song the same way twice....cant go wrong with either but SRV is my personal goat! I could listen to/watch SRV's Texas Flood live from El Mocambo on loop for days...just unbelievable...

Yeah, to me, their respective sounds were quite different. Jimi had that sort of "outer space" psychedelic element to his playing. Whereas Stevie sounded like the blues on steroids. Both were absolute guitar masters. But I'm a Stevie guy all the way!

The creator gets all the credit. Without Jimi Stevie wouldn't be playing this. Stevie ray was a 1-4-5 Blues shuffle expert. He had to play Hendrix and a few other artists just to mix it up and add something else. Hendrix played a wide variety of music.

What's crazy is that they both had VERY short lived careers ending in their untimely deaths.
Both Jimi and SRV learned their chops in dive clubs and bars to local theaters with other bands until getting record contracts on their own with their own bands;
Jimi Hendrix first recorded as a contributor in 1964 with the Isley Bros. but 1966 was when he and the Jimi Hendrix experience began their reign until 1970.
SRV also came up the ranks the same way and then formed SRV and Double Trouble, debut in 1983 until 1990
So basically Six and Seven years respectively of recording history of these two GOATs for the world to hear and love.

Jimi was the essence of transcendental guitar solo on Voodoo Chile. The fuzz and feedback style back in the day was new and fresh. Stevie obviously could do the same but was a bit crisper on the strings for a bit later audience. When I listen to the albums cuts of these two guys playing Voodoo Chile I prefer Stevie’s, but only because I prefer that cleaner style. However I can’t really compare the two guitarists. They’re like two different branches from the same massive tree.

We can all be fans of either of these 2 great guitarists and everyone can have their own opinion about who was the best guitarist and that’s all fine and good, but the one thing I will always respect about SRV is that he never compared himself to any other great guitarist and never disrespected anyone one including Hendrix. He never gave any attention to rankings or comparisons. If you can find any of his interviews you’d see how humble of a guy he was and never bragged about his talent or people trying to tell him whether he was as good or better than Jimmy.

Jimi Hendrix never compared himself to another guitarist in a disparaging way. In any interview I've ever seen (or heard) him in, he was very complimentary when speaking of the skills of other players. Jimi's songwriting and compositions were just as important to him as his guitar wizardry. He had it all...and then some.

Great reaction Stax. It’s impossible to compare. When Jimi did his original, it was absolutely raw, groundbreaking guitar work in which nothing of the sort ever existed before it. Stevie is showing his love for one of his greatest influences-- and he did it in a way only Stevie could do-- the ultimate technical proficiency. Jimi was a free flowing guitar master.

I don't know if you noticed, but Jimi was playing left handed. Since it was damn near impossible to get a lefty electric guitar back then, most lefties learned how to play right handed. Jimi just turned his guitar upside down. It's insane how good he was. It's such a shame he died so young.

I personally think Stevie Ray was a better guitar player than Jimi but Jimi was the innovator. Without him, Stevie Ray Vaughan wouldn't be who he was. As far as this song goes, the live version by SRV is way better but I will choose the studio version by Hendrix over all of them. It is one of the greatest recorded songs ever.

Although Jimmy Hendrix did NOT originate a lot of his tricks, he was the first to piece it altogether as music, as complete songs.
First as R n B songs that the Chitlin Circuit dismissed and always got him fired from his bands, and then he introduced it to ROCK......the white mans plastic rock, which Hendrix transformed into a credible rock to match the original rock from the Red Houses ....
He also taught the white world how to play electric guitar as a solo instrument of many sounds, tones and moods.
Before Hendrix, rock guitar was one finger picking like a beginner.

Jimmy Hendrix wrote this song. He was a master at that guitar . . . check it out, it’s UPSIDE DOWN he was a south paw. Also he did a version of the Star Spangled Banner (National Anthem) that was controversial at the time that you should take a look at.

Stevie Repetitive Vaughan is nothing compared to Jimi Hendrix. Technically great and passionate for sure but always the same licks and Jimi never repeated himself. Jimi was an open source of unlimited musical imagination. So many people are impressed by the wrong things.

Tricky thing to compare.
Problem is both Hendrix and SRV both perform this song in different ways each time live.
Another issue-sound quality and tech is different on existing videos. That doesn’t help Hendrix in comparing.
I really like SRV’s version in Austin 1989 best-full of energy and distinctive.
SRV is a guitar master; BUT,
if we were to hear only one version of “Voodoo Child”, it would have to be Hendrix because he was the original genius creator of it. I am sure SRV would feel the same.

The filter is for the wind not a pop filter. Just something they had to throw together because the wind was to strong. They had pop filters back then but that would not help in this situation.

You can't compare them because Stevie Ray Vaughn, who was only a teen when Jimi died, modeled himself largely after Jimi. Not that he didn't do his own thing, but you can't compare the original, who changed guitar playing and rock music to a musician who took all that he could learn from that person. And Jimi's live performances are great, but to hear his 'songs' as they were recorded, with a structure & his focused vocals, you have to listen to the studio versions. His live performances were very loose & he did extended solos and jammed, so to understand his songs (the vast majority of which he wrote the music & lyrics himself) you should definitely check out his studio versions.

Please listen to Jimi’s Voodoo Chile(Slight Return)original album/ lp(long player)recording version. I love the live grooving to this but original shuts it all down.
SRV wouldn't have done it later without Jimi. That being said, the Maui version isn't close to the best. It was an impromptu concert on the top of the mountain with stupid wind. It took 30 years before this got released.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check out the Woodstock version and do ALL Hendrix for a while.

ANOTHER COMMENT: This is outside your usual genres but how about Me and Bobby McGee by the creator Kris Kristofferson and the person who re-made it famous, Janis Joplin? If you're feeling frisky, throw in the Waylon Jennings version because Kris wrote it for Roger Miller to perform. And Roger was much more famous as a song writer, not a singer. Even more complex is the fact that Kris got famous by luck, sitting in with country stars as a janitor at the studio but later became more famous as an actor. Is that compelling enough?

Jimi's performance is even more impressive when you listen to a performance like that and hear him carrying the band the entire time. He hired Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding because they weren't good musicians. He was pissed at his label and he wanted to prove that he was so good he could be famous with mediocre musicians. You can hear them struggling to keep up with Jimi the entire time.

Comparing Jimi and SRV live is kind of difficult, because Jimi played very loosely live, extended solos, tangents etc & he didn't care about his vocals much playing live. His studio versions are where he shines. Jimi's got way more soul, the music is coming from another plane of existence through him. His vocals, when he was in the studio, perfectly fit the music & lyrics he crafted. It's pure otherworldly energy & I'll take that over precise notes any day.

I think the Jimi vs. Stevie argument will endure forever. Personally, I'm an SRV guy. His playing was always more technically precise and controlled, despite playing a guitar with extremely heavy-gauged strings and high action. I've read quotes from other noted guitarists who said they tried playing Stevie's instrument and couldn't bend those strings to save their lives. Yet Stevie completely manipulated them to achieve that unmistakably deep, gritty tone. Plus, Stevie displayed just as much showmanship as Jimi---AND had a stronger singing voice. Everyone gets to have opinions, though. I'm simply expressing mine.
