The Doocots of Yoker

- Doocot. Just a shortened version of Dovecote, a Scots version that does away with all those unnecessary consonants.
I think we're all familiar with the doocots attached to Scottish castles, like the wonderful example attached to Newark Castle in Port Glasgow. But what are they?
Doocots, or dovecotes, were small buildings constructed to house doves, or pigeons. They were generally part of castles or grand houses, where the pigeons could be used for both eating and a source of feathers.
Today, all over Glasgow, men have been constructing doocots in unused bits of spare ground. But why?
In this brief video we wander along the Glasgow to Balloch cycle path, once a railway line, in the direction of Yoker, and discover a rebellious sense of freedom in an area that has lost its past. For Yoker sits between the shipbuilding areas of Clydebank and Whiteinch, and in the absence of much of that industry Yoker, like many places in Scotland and around the UK, is struggling.
But the good people of Yoker aren't about to let a little thing like the loss of shipbuilding get them down. The men of Yoker want to build things. And so they have built doocots.
A brief insight into a fascinating architectural facet of human nature.

Hi Eddie, My pal Sam lived in brigton with his maw, it was on the top floor of a tenement, he cut a hole through the ceiling in his bedroom and made a doocot in the loft. Then of course he had to cut a hole through the roof of the tenement to make the flap to flee his doos.
Well I never! We had loads of doocots around when I was young and they did racing pigeons, didn't realise that they knocked them up like that on any available space, surprised they are so lenient but pleased as well,

Used to see these all over Glasgow, a lot in Maryhill, on cleared areas.
My cousin Daniel kept pigeons on a drawer in house in Drumchapel, his mum went crazy and my mum gave him permission to build a Doocot in our back garden in Clydebank. he had it for a couple of years. Great video, keep up the good work.

I've not been along that path. The more off road paths that we have the merrier. There's a doocot beside a farm building near me, but I dont think that its been used for decades. Very interesting video. 👍👍👍

In fact….. shipbuilding in the area (yoker, scotstoun, govan) is bustling.
There has actually been part of the Clyde filled in to build a massive frigate housing/factory
You're not wrong, but in the past there were many different shipbuilding yards, and the number of men employed would have been far greater than at present.
@@EdExploresScotland yes of course. I was brought up in Yoker. I spent the late 70s and early 80s there. A tough but good place. I know those ducats well
