The only thing that matters in the sprint is who crosses the line first. When the pace starts to pick up, being behind is actually an advantage, as you can draft the rider in front to conserve energy for the final sprint - so up until someone decides to sprint, it's all a game of cat and mouse - trying to get behind the other rider to gain the advantage.
The race was over at 2:58. Hoy let Bos go up track and at the same time, left that hole for Bos to dive thru (apron side). When the world record holder for the flying 200 (Bos), has several pedal strokes and bike lengths on you, there is nothing you can do. Matched sprints are like watching prize fighting, where two men square off and go head to head. It's really exciting and the highlight of any world's.
@3112rider1. Damn!! That is huge! When I was riding, most of us clocked around an :11, and used a 93" or so. A 52x14 is a 100", and I am guessing that is why they are hitting sub 10's. We didn't have the power to push that huge of a gear. But, I never used enhancing chemicals, either. I'm not saying Bos or Hoy do, but I"m pretty sure some are. Back in the 70's when I was on the velo, we just had good 'ol steel and alloy stuff, maybe some titanium, bikes around 15 pounds, spoked wheels.
@chenshiwei: in the sprint riders don't go all out, until the bell (usually). this race is all about tactics. the ideal is to be the man behind and then get the jump on the lead guy. thus, the lead person will do trackstands and other maneuvers to get the person that is behind to go to the front. hoy did something highly unusual in that he started the race behind (in the coveted spot) and then moved to the front. not sure why. after the bell they do a full lap at FULL speed
Right, a sprint is usually 1000m (I think), whoever crosses the line first wins. The rider starts on the inside has to take the lead for the first 1/2 lap... but he doesn't want to be in the lead, as it's a disadvantage in a sprint, so they go slowly, trying to get the other person in front. They do eventually have to sprint for the line of course, but they wait until one rider sees a good opportunity to surprise their opponent, and then sprint for the line. Or there abouts.
Can anyone tell me why for the first half of the video the two riders did not even do any hard effort after they were released by the race officials? All I saw was just some trackstands and both riders following each other vertically up and down the velodrome. Can anyone explain what Track Racing is all about? Sorry, I don't ride track.
It's all just tactics anyway. The best case scenario is to be riding just behind your opponent in the last few hundred metres, so you can ride in his slipstream and expend less energy. You can then power past with your fresher legs and overtake just before the line. The first 3/4 of the race is all just tactics, trying to manipulate your opponent into taking the lead, with you following just behind. These are the basic tactics of the race at least.
hey i ride the velodrome quite often , your welcome to come if you live in the uk to herne hill velodrome , in the holidays ie: summer or easter holidays there are go ride sessions on thursdays 10am , tthey are great fun and your very welcome there
At this level, even with a huge gap like that, the following rider should make the effort to chase. The repachage is not a good reason to just quit. This is not a local weekend race. The Worlds are everything to a track racer!!!

Pretty cool sport. Starts with slow, tense strategy and manoeuvring followed by an explosion of speed and power

Chris Hoy is BEAST !

What an awesome sport. i love how SLOW they start and just poke and prod at each other to start and burn themselves.
two best track cyclists in the world right here

Its where the term "track stand" comes from. Used to be the case these would go on for 20 minutes.
Ecco perché mi piace la pista.
good move..caught him..i need to learn this sport too. some serious tactics right there. to get your opennent out of position
I still don't fully understand how the starts work. I thought each rider was to hold the lane he started in?

Was this not the first in a best of 3?, if so, I'm dying to know who won!
thats a hell of a draw for either of them to get the other in the 1/4 finals
Does anyone know what size gear these guys use?
OH' MAN, DID HE HIT HIM HARD..!
when the race starts??? the time counter??? confused

slipstream.. big advantage if you can get right behind your opponent
Tactics and aerodynamics.
Wow! Very well played tatically buy Theo Bos!!
@PianoLerner yep

what gear ratio did they use ??
At this time, I bet around 92-96.
Pure tactics won that round.
Why is it Bos can't beat Cavendish on the road sprints ? Cavendish would stand no chance against Hoy in this kind of track race..
lol
Bos's last 200 meters is only slightly slower than my 200m TT w/ flying start
i still dongt understand y its better to be behind?wen the bell goes then u can just go fast and ull win
The slow-mo at the start of the race was a little unnecessary
And I thought "Sir" Hoy was all that!
you think that's taunting? watch the run-up to a boxing match.
@pepatung09 probably 53-14
haha indeed x
yea right! Bos is faster.
лол
i have ever done a match sprint. looks like u gotta make a sneaky jump.
