So... He met satan in the park to break up with him and held him in his arms one last time? lol xD It's just about a relationship ending. Sad song, but not satan-sad- song. I think satan is a jolly fellow actually, he just failed to pay rent in heaven and due to gentrification he put all his chips on the table and bought (and swiftly moved) to an alternative plane of existence which is kinda warm.
+MrMoonwalkingBear I think it's about cheating or some big secret to keep from your partner. Basically saying that 1 lie ruined things so much he may as well of lied a 1000 times
I love this song so much that I went to Tompkins Square Park in NYC to find the inspiration behind this song. I was shocked. It was a basic park, not with much green or trees. I felt like I walked into a time machine and was in the 90s. It was darker and there were stones everywhere. Nothing like Central Park, beautiful and elegant. I wondered how this song could be based off of this park. I just listened to this song for the millionth time last night and I realized the importance of the line “I want to hold you in the dark one last time.” He wants to be alone with her. He doesn’t want this to be crowded Central Park where he can’t actually be alone with her, surrounded by so many people. This song is about a sad goodbye, an intimate one however. And that would be perfect in Tompkins Square Park, a dark park.
I've noticed that in society, people love to follow the crowd, but I like when a band evolves, it shows their true talent. The fact they can transition from a banjo to a violin/electric guitar, and still be Mumford and Sons is fantastic.
I love how there’s a rock band hiding inside the banjos. I like some of their earlier stuff, but as a mainly rock music fan, the one where they really cut loose are my favorites. The Cave, The Delta, Believe, Little Lion Man, and The Wolf are just awesome.
There isn't any song Mumford & Sons sing that I don't like. They have helped through some very rough times lately. I can't remember enjoying music so much. Thank you guys.
This song makes me cry because it reminds me of my dog. He passed away four years ago, he was with me from the age of 8 until I was 22, almost when I finished university. Every day before I left for school he would come up to me as if to give me a hug but this was no longer possible in my last week of school because he passed away the weekend before. I will never forgive myself for not realising in time what he had, for not having enough money to get him to the vet. Dear friend, you don't know what I would give to spare you the suffering of your last moments, to hold you one last time, to not have the painful memory of how life escaped from your eyes. I miss you, you were always by my side, you were the only one who perceived my sadness and was there to comfort me. You were my friend, my family. I hope one day you can forgive me and we will see each other again when the time comes. Although you were not eternal, the love that united us will be.
It's so weird how one's relationship with a song changes over time.....I used to play Tompkins Square Park on repeat pretty much whole day now I seem to not play it as much....times were tough back then, got my heart broken and that made me relate to this song so much...now I'm at a better place mentally, maybe that's the reason I can't relate to it as much....This album on the whole was pretty much my jam from the time it released in 2015! Fan of Mumford and Sons since!
Chris O'Connell I listened to this album on repeat during a breakup... so many painful emotions from this beautiful music. For me, the pain lingered for months until I felt less need to sit in it... over time and new moments of life it’s duller but years later when I listen to this album my heart still swells up a bit. Guess it depends how much you felt for this person. Good luck, and I hope you find happiness :)
While i just discovered this dope song, i also listen to heavy metal and damn it's helped me a lot in my break up. Check out parkway drive, amity affliction, they got some damn good depressing songs.
This might be my favorite track on the album. At first I didn't like any of the songs. And then I listened to it again and was like, "okay yeah I get you, some of you are cool". and then I went on a road trip with my buddy and as we were driving through the country side I played this album and OH LORD. Needless to say, I really love this album now. Keep doing cool things M&S.
Yes exactly, when skipping through their songs to find a new favourite I dont like any of them but when i properly listen to them im like "wow this is good stuff" :D
Tonight I lost my niece. I've never been so distraught in my life. This song was the first I turned to because with in the last three years of my life Mumford & Sons were and still the number one thing that keeps me from falling into a dark place. You guys are amazing and I can not thank you enough for existing. Rest in peace, Genesis.
+noth saddness Their other stuff if folk, the genre of this is rock. They used to be a rock band but he fell in love with the banjo. THEY ARE BACK BITCHES!
I love how he's singing about desiring to be with someone one more time... Proving that in a way... That flame still Burns. My experiences in life have taught me that flames very ever burn out, they just lose intensity, and flicker occasionally.... But that dimmer flame can lul you into believe it no longer can light your path, or keep you warm
If you have known love and lost it, this song will move you in some way. I can't put into words how this song effects me. It's like everything else stops and I go somewhere else.
I'm in love with their music, for fuck sake! This line :' If only things were black and white. Cause I just want to hold you tight without holding back my mind' makes me cry,
I can honestly say that of all the songs that I have listened to in my life, this is another one. Isn't it amazing how just when you think you are sure about something, that something becomes unsure about you? Confusion is like looking into the mirror, and not recognising who is looking back at you. This happened last week, the person who stared back at me called me a peeping tom. And to cap it off, my real name is Tom!! Namaste.
i can´t believe they got no commercial break . That speak´s for it self . I press play and the Music starts. I feel like in the good old days. they Love their Music . Respect.
I listened to this about 20 times today. Every time I thought of someone else I loved and spent time with in Tompkins Square Park since the riot in 1988 who is gone now. If any place in the world defines me and my life both in my photographs and in the people who played a large part in my life this is the place. I met my wife Nozomi there we split and she is gone now. Damn most of my NYC friends I met there Stanley Cohen [I was tripping on shrooms] LES Jewels too now gone. The list is endless. More photos of mine from TSP were published in NYC papers than any other place. Sad I miss the people and the Park. Everything goes. Listen to the song.
I was born a Muslim in Iraq. I was worried and depressed, sitting and looking at the Tigris River in my city.Jesus' face appeared to me in the water and told me. "Son, you're not alone" And now I'm a Christian, and I pray every day at the edge of the river.Thank you Jesus for this grace. I'm not alone right now. Jesus is with me

Driving down the West Coast blaring this whole album is one of the best feelings in the world. 10/10 would recommend this whole album if you ever are taking a road trip.
These guys are one of the most talented bands out today. Their range is unbelievable. How many bands have done a 180 and pulled it off, as they have? Going 80 mph through the mountains to Lake Tahoe this past weekend, sunroof open, M&S blasting, this song was my co-pilot.
A girl that was practicing for being a music teacher in my music class last year showed us "Hopless Wanderer", as an example of a modern band who plays folk music using actual folk instruments, and no one in my class apreciated it as much as I did. That brought me to look for their songs and since then I've always loved them, no matter the instruments, the pit of the song or the style of it, I loved every song for different reasons but every of them sharing one: the passion that has been put into the writing and performing of every song. Finally, I do not consider myself to be a part of the "fandom" since I know nothing about them apart from their names, but I enjoy them as musicians and I love Mumford & Sons.
My favorite are the bassist's facial expressions. It's just one example of the passion in each song. He literally does that the whole time during the live show. It's epic. - passionate bass player
I'm afraid i'd listen to this song too many times I get used to it. I wanna listen to it all the time yet still feel Winston's guitar pierce my heart everytime.
When the album first came out, I too was a little baffled. I started buying one song at a time. The more I listen, the more I love it. I have the whole album now.
A beautiful song from a beautiful album, produced by a group overflowing with talent. We're so fortunate to be able to listen to such lovely music! PS: If anyone else likes to listen to music while reading (like I do), I've found that this goes wonderfully with "Sons and Daughters of Ease and Plenty". They complement one another in a way I can't quite describe. Cheers!
After listening to the album version and then this version, I honestly like the live stuff better. Its less fabricated and is true to their original sound.
Heather Williamson Same here! It has everything that I love about Mumford and Sons; emotion, great lyrics and a great build up and ultimately a climax. Winston's distorted guitar is just amazing at the end. It kind of reminds me of The National which is a great thing. I don't know if you checked their BBC Radio 1 performance or not (www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05r6hx7 play from approximately 2:02:46), but they did an incredible performance of "Snake Eyes"
Had the Album pre ordered and been listening to it non-stop. This album really sets mumford and sons apart from a lot of other artists as they switched away from their classic sound but still made an amazing album. Love wilder mind and this song
"No flame burns forever..."
So brutally true
Someone had to say it !
GILKS81 ...he is talking to satan. A lot of their music is pro Jesus, anti satan...as it should be

Come on! Plz Satan. Just one last time :D
don't agree with that
I remember when this album came out and i wasnt too sure about it. It quickly became one of my favorites. Much better than Delta for sure.
I came here to cry.
Favorite line:
"Oh babe, I really wish you would not cry.I only ever told you one lie, when it could have been a thousand"
Might as well have been a thousand
But no flame burns forever no no (oh) bobobobobsen1

Breanna Allen Absolutely my favourite on the album.
So excited for the release tomorrow!!!

As a longtime fan of Weird Al Yankovic, I can attest that hearing the same artist you love in multiple genres is not a bad thing.

This song came at the exact right moment for me. God, what a heart-breaking track

The last guitar solo, it is magic! Really good good music!
Good mumford
This song grows on you ridiculously well
The whole album does
+James Kalinowski Even though their last album is their worst yet, it's still amazing. This is my favourite song from that album.

Yeah, definitely good for that mood.
