Liberal values are declining and populism is on the rise, with the United States becoming the main force in undermining international norms over the past decade. This is according to Yan Xuetong, a leading Chinese scholar in international relations, who says that China should give priority to "neighborhood diplomacy" given the current tensions between China and the U.S. How worried should we be about declining liberal values and rising populism? How will China and the U.S. deal with their current frictions? And to what extent will global diplomacy be impacted by this year's many elections and rising geopolitical tensions?
