Martha Argerich, Klavier | Mischa Maisky, Violoncello
EN / Martha Argerich and Mischa Maisky LIVE from the Görlitz synagogue
The synagogue in Görlitz is one of the most exciting cultural monuments in Lusatia. It is not only an art nouveau building of exceptional beauty, but also has an eventful history, because it is one of the few synagogues in Germany that did not fall victim to the pogrom night of 1938. The two world-class musicians Martha Argerich and Mischa Maisky, who have a special affinity for this unique place due to their personal history, will make the former synagogue resound - almost half a year before the planned opening to the public .
    Works by J. S. Bach, L. v. Beethoven an M. Bruch
Martha Argerich, piano | Mischa Maisky, violoncello

Unglaubliche Darbietung.

Beautiful concert. (no audience). I heard several recordings of Mischa Maisky playing the Bach solo cello suites. I notice he plays the prelude in G major much faster than in his early years. This is more reminiscent of the way Rostropovich played it. I prefer the slower tempo in truth. That said, an excellent performance as always from the maestro. Thank you all for allowing us to hear this concert in a splendid venu.

This beautiful concert brings a twist to my emotions. This synagogue Was built in the early 20th century .It was set on fire by the Nazis in 1939. Half the Congregation left Germany, half were murdered by Hitler . It has not been used as a synagogue since and was left to decay by the East German Govt. In an act of faith Protestant students led a movement to restore it. The isolation of the performers due to Covid adds to the eerie feeling ,understanding that a whole community that used to worship here was destroyed. Maisky was himself imprisoned by the Soviets partly because he is Jewish. He understands the evil that can occur when Governments become agents of hate and tyrannical control.
I am sure the performers understood the importance of this concert and Argerich who hasn't played solo in a concert for years does so for her friend Maisky. What better music to ponder the almighty than Bach and Beethoven ?

because he ??? I'm sure it wasn't good. an yet over 40% of the American electorate would vote in a similarly brutal regime in the USA in 2024. Terrifying on a human scale, part of the cycle of destruction and creation from a universal point of view. As a human, All that is good in human society cries out, "DON'T!!!!!"

Reverberation overall is a pity. It muddies the clarity of Bach’s lines and detracts from the impact of the performances. But the concept of the concert and its setting are wonderful and beautiful. To witness Argerich’s present-day artistry is historic.

Beethoven’s sonata for Pianoforte and cello oblige in g minor opus 2. Sonata for Pianoforte with the accompaniment of a cello. Beethoven’s original titles. Cello sonata is an inaccurate term. Not Beethoven’s intention. These duo sonatas are chamber works in keeping with the piano trios and quartets. The piano gets top billing in these sonatas and variations for the two instruments.
