    As a recently retired touring sound engineer for well over 40 years Jon does a really good job here on how to become a good engineer. As Jon says, learn something new every day of your life and never settle for own performance. I always regarded myself as the extra member of the band I was working for. The band will want to get to know you if you're upfront with them from day one. At 24 minutes he mentions my own personal bugbear with most sound engineers in that the backline is often too loud, especially bass. I worked a few years ago with Cleo Laine and went to her in the soundcheck and asked her to sing at me directly without a microphone and P.A. to hear what her voice really sounded like. I couldn't believe that after 60 years on stage that I was the first sound engineer ever to have asked her to do that on a live concert. The main problem is the increase in the stage sound once the gig has started. I worked with a band where, especially in small theatres, the bass player would constantly increase his amp onstage volume which I often couldn't mix everything else up to get to his level. To help this I used to switch my desk mic on and tut down the drummers monitor speaker which was a pre arranged signal to get him to tell the bass player to turn down. .... So be confident of your own ability and make sure that the band realise that you're with them and not against them and listen.. As Jon says, do a good job and write the band members names down so when you're on the desk you can call them by name when you want them to do something and they will appreciate it that you've made a point of remembering it. Also get cards printed and hand them out at gigs to management for future engagements..

      Thanks for the great comment. Yes, getting anyone ti turn down on stage is always an entire art all of it's own!

      Hi Darryn, the great thing about being an experienced sound man is that pro bands know that the soundman can make, or break, a band quite easily on a live gig. If the soundman thinks the band need explaining why he wants the band to do X Y or Z and makes his point in a confident way they will normally listen and do what he requests... thanks for your feedback..

    • @darryndelasoul3167
      @darryndelasoul3167 6 лет назад +1

      Indeed. And an experienced band will also know to listen to what the sound *person* (lol, sound ladies exist you know!) says. When one or the other has less experience then things go wrong...

    • @jamesappleton7390
      @jamesappleton7390 6 лет назад

      You're quite right Darryn, lady sound persons are out there although most of them are in-house rather than touring. One exception is the Soundgirl with the Chris Barber Band, her name is Becky and she is Albert Lee's daughter.. She's been with Chris for at least 10 years and drives and humps her P.A. in, with the help of a couple of the band guys.

      Actually I think you'll find that there are quite a few women touring these days. Still not as many as men, of course, but the number is growing all the time :)

    I can't believe no one is standing up to pass you some water.. 40min in .. if the organisers can't pick up on it, how many people in the audience...? It's painful to see that noone makes a move... and its the topic you are trying to cover...to be helpful...
    What a legend you are John and your talk is amazingly well structured. Thank you.

    Hey John, great vid. I'm a yank engineer, and although I don't have any Euro experience, I can absolutely attest to your claim of the poorly installed systems over here. The first thing I'll ask the house bloke is, "where is your crossover point?" The answer they give lets me know where the work starts. As I've started to get gigs where I'm assigned an apprentice or assistant, ideas like the ones in your video help me articulate to those who are learning how to have some success in this awesome field of work. All the best.
