- Up next, an interview with 80s icon Terri Nunn from New Wave band Berlin about her band’s biggest song. It was a #1 hit… It was a central song from Top Gun one of the biggest movies of the decade. It was even nominated for an Oscar! Thing is, as we’ll find out... some of the band members didn’t want any part of the song because they didn’t write it. First of all, Berlin wasn’t even the first choice. Legendary Producer Georgio Moroder had the Motels as the first band in position, but then when he turned to Berlin, the band’s principals had a major disagreement about doing someone else’s song... then when it became popular it divided their fanbase. Then when you thought there couldn’t possibly be any more drama…When it was nominated for an Oscar the band didn’t even get to perform it… Find out why they chose someone else next in this exclusive interview.

On this installment of Revelations, we have some real rock and roll drama! This 80s band came up from the underground and were rising stars when they got the chance of a lifetime… To do a song that would be featured prominently in the biggest movie of 1986… Top Gun. Only problem was the main songwriter and keyboardist wanted nothing to do with it because it was an outside song…
Up next we get the story firsthand from the singer. The beautiful and talented Terri Nunn from New Wave band Berlin… Find out who was the first choice to sing this #1 hit. Take My Breath Away and the drama of recording it. How it divided fans and the band and why the band didn’t get to perform it at the Oscars when it was nominated.
So you may have noticed that Take My Breath Away was not in the sequel. Maverick… It should've been. It was much more memorable than the main Lady Ga Ga song. and actually when the movie was released… Take My Breath Away went back into the charts.

She. Has. Not. Aged. And she still has such great inflection in her voice.
She's amazing for sure!
She certainly is still a gorgeous woman, even today.
I think she actually hotter now than she was in the 80s. Plus, that was just a fun, revealing interview. She has clarity and perspective on that time now she didn't have at the time.
She looks amazing still.
I love this goddess. And if possible, I could definitely get along with her daughter.
Wow, she is stunning almost 40 years later.
for sure!
Dude, I was thinking the same thing!
GILF central!
No doubt. I would normally stay away from a vvoman with different hair colors. But she has aged like a very fine wine. Tasty indeed.
Mighty fine genes
She always has been
How the hell does she still look like she did in the ‘80s??
Damn…. Beautiful inside and out ♥️♥️
No kidding.
Maybe because she's been stealing breaths back? ^-^ But yeah, she does look very good. I mean she is older than i am, and i look like hammered dog meat. ^-^
It’s like she never aged.
@@jeromethiel4323 😂😂…. I seriously doubt that though 😂😂
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 ikr? Even her hair? Wtf? 😂
I love how she turned around and asked how the song came across to YOU. You have proven yourself MORE than credible in the music industry - congrats!
I agree 100%. I was actually coming to the comments to say that. What a cool question from her.
He would have only been around 10 at that time. It was odd for her to ask and it looked like he was fudging his answer. Sorry.
@@erestube anyone would be awkward in that position if theyre not a huge berlin fan, especially as it was happening. I like the move though, because typically interviewers try everything to make it not about them, so to get t turned around on them is usually great.
Agree!! 100%!!!!!!
Terri is a genuine class act
Berlin had so many catchy songs, namely "Masquerade", "The Metro", and "No More Words." They're technically not a One Hit Wonder, yet they're mainly only known for "Take My Breath Away."
Yep. I think that's why the band was so against it!
@@ProfessorofRock I am listening to Nunn talk about how John was against it, and I can imagine how he felt when someone else song became this HUGE hit, devastating as a songwriter I know I would be! I would have felt low as if my work wasn't good enough! BUT as Trina Q said, it isn't like they were one hit wonders! I loved their music before and after this one song!
You missed 'Sex'.
No, they weren't a one-hit wonder group,
but radio stations that play this song
treat them like they were. Wonder
how they'd react to hearing "Sex (I'm A...)".
That's the first song I ever heard by them.
All three of those were amazing songs.
She has gotten more beautiful over time.......And what a great personality she has..
She's so fun! One of my favorites!
Right.
While waiting for a bus I went into a record shop and came across the discounted cassette "Count three and Pray". I end up buying it because of "Take my breathe away". Walking back to the bus stop I put on the tape. After listening to just the first song "Will I ever understand you", I turned around and ran back to buy the other Berlin tape they had.
Over 35 yrs later and I still have those tapes.
Terri made the right move regardless, she scored a number hit and will be forever remembered for this song. She absolutely killed the vocals and the interpretation.
Their performance, particularly the vocal, takes this song to another level. It's not fair she still looks this good and sings as well as ever. What a ride for Terri Nunn 💫
Agreed! Thanks Italrish!
What a masterpiece.
Ive never seen her daughter but shes got those genes.
One of the ultimate 1980s HOT Moms. So awesome to see she is not a conceited "star" but is a regular person. Great interview, she is very talented.
She’s got it going on 🎶

I met her at a meet and greet at the Riviera theater in Tonawanda New York. She invited people to dance on the stage to the song dancing with Berlin. I was one of them!

I've had a huge crush on Terri Nunn since the 80's and she is still absolutely gorgeous at 61 y/o. She is also a very talented vocalist and sounds great live.
It's funny how she described making the song "more fluid." And that's exactly what this song does... It washes over you & engulfs you with emotion. Just an amazing piece of work. She is absolutely stunning as well as very charming.
They certainly picked the correct woman to sing.
Ha ha! Yes they did!
IKR?
It was awesome to see Berlin in concert in 1984. They opened for Thompson Twins in their "Into The Gap" concert. I still have my ticket! :)
Wow. That's a great memory! Where at?
I don’t have my ticket, but I tell people all the time that it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended.
@@ProfessorofRock Roger from The Cure was in that touring incarnation of TT
Not that whole concert tour. I saw a show of that Thompson Twins tour too, but somehow forgot the opening act, but I know I'd have remembered if it was Berlin.
@@ProfessorofRock Salt Lake City
Big Berlin fan. I loved the song, but it was very different than their other work. To me it transcended new wave. I was married and in the Navy at the time and the song became our song. We have been married for almost 40 years now. Loved Terri Nunn then, and still do. What a genius. She seems like someone I would love to be friends with. Great interview. You should have asked about the interesting video for the song shot in the boneyard.
She doesn't look as though she has had any work done to her face at all. Very natural and beautiful. Wowza.
"Top Gun" had such an amazing soundtrack, so many phenomenal songs are associated with it. "Danger Zone," You've Lost that Loving Feeling", "Great Balls of Fire", to name but a few. ❤️🎶
It was a monster fo sure! What's your favorite song from it Trina?
@@ProfessorofRock Probably "Great Balls", it always gets me ready to boogie! How about yourself?
Playing with the Boys and the epic anthem from Steve Stevens
You can totally tell she put such deep emotions into her vocals. I'm sorry to hear it's because she was sad about not having that in her life. Funny story about turning down the Oscars and admitting it was because of arrogance. It takes a great interviewer to pull that kind of raw truth out of an interviewee. Another great episode, Adam. Thank you for giving us this back story. Have an excellent day.
Thanks Jill! I really appreciate it!
She’s candid.
I've seen Berlin in concert 5 years ago and they're amazing. Terri is an incredible front woman with so much energy. Honestly, this woman doesn't age.
As for "Take My Breath Away", it's not just timeless, it's one of the best songs ever made.
Jealous!!! I'd love to catch a show!!!
I concur.
She made me a bigger fan of hers from this episode.
From her take on the song’s inception + it’s trajectory, her chill vibe and relaxed attitude about everything, to her being a fan of Sasha Baron Cohen, and the there’s her timeless beauty.
On top of that all… *that voice*! Ugh! Goddess.
💕
110% agree. LOVE this incredible woman!
Paul McCarthy said it best though, we all love "silly love songs". Berlin proved it.
Both #1 hits!
Paul who?
I love yoooooooouuu.
Terri Nunn, is second to none. She's amazing. Her voice was mesmerizing. Very underrated.
One of my first crushes! Thanks Jimmy!
"Second to none". Kudos for cleverness.👍
@Professor of Rock A lot of young men crushed on her. Great singer, and gorgeous.
Correction: Second to Nunn!
She’s like the Queen.
As others have mentioned Terri Nunn looks fantastic! I would have said she looks about 30-35 years old in this interview. She is so down to earth and self aware. Great interview and I really liked how she revealed how she interpreted the song. She’s a true artist.
Easter Egg: At the 20:53 mark note her contribution on the album cover. ROLFL.
I was always a Berlin fan. "Take My Breath Away" just solidified it even further.
What's not to love? Great music. Great voice. And she's always been a breathtaking beauty. She still is breathtaking.
The band didn't make any money from it. Love how Terri always looks you directly in the eye when talking. She's awesome 👌
Agreed. Thanks David.
Well not directly from the standpoint of royalties, but how many more people showed up at shows from then till now that wouldn't have without that hit, or explored their other work and bought albums and etc..that part you cannot measure but i am sure it played a part in making them loads of money otherwise. But on the other side of the coin you wonder, did it set them back in a way becoming bigger or cost them another hit by the break up of the band over it.
She’s so polite.
yeah thats BS, the reason they still sell tickets is because of that song, period.
@@nwerd7584 I see them for the EP stuff, as do all my punk/new wave friends. No one sees them for this song.
That song made me love them even more , Terri is so down to earth with a great attitude.
Yes she is!
I remember Terri from before her music career. She was in the movie 'Thank God It's Friday' where she and Valerie Landsburg snuck into a disco through a bathroom window in platform shoes. Also had a then almost unknown Jeff Goldblum as a ladies man. Donna Summer was also in it and she sang the Oscar winning song 'Last Dance'.
Actually, that same year, Goldblum
was one of the stars of the remake
of "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers"
(one of the only really great remakes).
4 years earlier, he'd played a thug
in the original "Death Wish".
Yes, I bought that movie on DVD. I still love the soundtrack. I was wishing POR would ask Terri about "Thank God It's Friday."
She was in an episode of Lou Grant in May of 1979.
There's a bit of audition footage from "Star Wars" with Terri, going for the Princess Leia role.
OMG!
What a personality!
What a performer!
What a beautiful person, with such a beautiful soul.
Thank you for this interesting interview.
She has such a wide historic past, where do you start?
And Giorgio is another fabulous artist.
Giorgio was labeled the "Father of Disco" at one point due to his unending string of disco-songs on the charts & his association with Donna Summer.
I remember as a young man, hearing his song "Son Of My Father" on the radio and eventually bought it on a 45.
So, the association of Terry & Giorgio could only produce gold.
Nice work Professor.👍✌️🙏
The disco man 🪩

Terri Nunn is one of my all-time faves! Love, Love, Love Riding On The Metro!
I remember seeing Berlin at a club long before others.
Take My Breath Away was an OK song for me......... I know it was insanely popular due to Top Gun. I preferred No More Words that was released that same year.
Thanks, Professor.
Your knowledge takes our breath away. 😂
she's no Debra Harry!
No More Words was released in 1984, another cheery song of theirs.
@@donaldcarpenter5328 Probably because she’s nothing like Debbie Harry.
I got to see them in concert right after Top Gun came out and that song got really popular. Pretty cool concert... she came down into the audience (right next to me, I was on the aisle) and ended up dancing with a guy I knew for like 20 seconds or so just feet from me (not to this particular song, though). He certainly has a great memory from that concert :)
Thanks for sharing Shane! Sounds like her!
Haha, I wonder if that guy was caught off guard…
Good Lord, she hasn't aged a day! She's just as immortal as her voice! No surgery either, it's amazing!! SHE'S amazing!!❤❤
She is such a cool lady with such an amazing, iconic voice. Absolutely love Berlin, and everything she sings is Gold.
Went to a Berlin concert at the local college. While they were playing I was in the second row of seats from the stage. Everyone in the first row was dancing so she came down off the stage stood on the other side of the first row seats right in front of me , looked down at me and was singing her heart out. I just sat there legs spread looking up at her as she was looking at me and enjoyed 'our personal' space that night. I will always remember that.
😍Terri fing RULES!!!! One of the most underrated vocalists ever, she can sing damn near anything. Everyone needs to hear Berlins Strings Attached album, it’s SO fing good!!!
I agree. Amazing. What's your favorite track by them?
@@ProfessorofRock Now It’s My Turn!! The new version on Strings Attached may just be better than the original I’ve loved since the early 80s?
I heard they came out with some new stuff recently.
This is the type of interview I enjoy 😉 He allows her to talk and not interrupt her with personal commentary, answering his own questions. No unnecessary jokes or silly questions to fill the void. The Professor is definitely The Truth 👍
I appreciate her talent, but was in awe to see how beautifully she has blossomed ❤ everyone has mentioned it, but she is Gorgeous. Looking like 30yrs old max😊
The song is so iconic, I can’t imagine them disliking it so much. It does take my breath away when I listen to it so I’m baffled by the whole band/fans hated it think.
Cheap Trick has a similiar feeling about The Flame. They didnt write it, it was pushed by the label in their case.
@@chaffsalvo I understand but if it pays the bills like in the case of Berlin I totally understand
@@chaffsalvo Cheap Trick was already banking with a big following I understand them not really wanting to sing someone else’s song especially if they were forced.
It's a delicate balance. Dedicated fans -- the ones who listen to albums and not just what radio programmers allow on the air -- want to hear a band experiment and develop, but they want the band to retain the core elements that drew them to the band in the first place. I was drawn to Berlin because their energy (frequently augmented by complex rhythms) was infectious, their use of synthesizer was innovative, and by the time "Take My Breath Away" came out, Terri Nunn had established herself as an unusually versatile singer with a range from breathy sex kitten ("Sex") to Pat Benatar-level hard rocker ("Now It's My Turn"). I can only remember one previous slow song ("Torture" from "Pleasure Victim") by Berlin, and I think it's ponderous and dull. I don't think it attracted much of a following.
I thought "Take My Breath Away" was a lot like "Torture" without the provocative title. I was greatly relieved to find that someone else wrote it, so there was hope it was a one-off and not a permanent new direction. It turned out that was the case, as Berlin broke up before recording another album. (Nunn later formed different bands that used the same name.)
Terri certainly has a lot of personality and calls 'em as she sees 'em! She made the right call on interpreting the song and singing it her way. What a timeless and memorable tune! Thanks Adam!
Thanks Robster!
With passion.
she never ages,
right? You a fan of the band?
@@ProfessorofRock I like some of their songs. Not a huge fan
Love her.
Terri still takes my breath away 😍
Fantastic singer and it is so great that the band is back again with John and David. Their last two albums are fantastic 👍
She has the absolute perfect voice for that song IMO. Clear as a bell even on the high notes. I love that she talks about putting her own feelings of sadness and a certain degree of despair about love into the song, as it goes a long way toward me feeling like Maverick and Charlie's relationship was always kind of doomed to be a short-term fling, even when I watched the movie back in the 80's. (I legit LOL'd at people saying they wish Charlie had gotten at least a mention in the new movie. I doubt Maverick has thought about her much at all over the years. She certainly wasn't the love of his life or anything like that.)
"Take My Breath Away" is great and Berlin was the perfect band to perform it, but I really liked their earlier music, "The Metro" is underrated, but one of the best 80s songs.
Agreed. The Metro is a true 80s classic.
@@ProfessorofRockBeen one of my faves since then!
Another great song.
Love this song. It was playing in the background when I proposed to my wife. Great band. Great live performances.
Here’s to many more years Roy.
One soundtrack from the 80’s that I love is “Rainman” which was several great artists. Aaron Neville, Etta James, and of course…Hans Zimmer. But my favorite on there was Lou Christie with, Beyond The Blue Horizon. Our daughter was 4 when that came out and we decided between the two us that that would be our song. Then, last September on her Wedding day, it was played at the reception and we danced together to it. Got me crying!
This interview with Terri Nunn was absolutely "timeless" and such a treat to watch and listen to. When I first heard 'Take My Breath Away' as a teenager back in the summer of 1986, I somehow knew right away that it was going to be a timeless classic in every possible way. I'd never imagine (back then) I'd be watching an interview nearly 40 years later with Berlin's lead singer, of her analyzing one of the greatest ballads ever recorded and giving it the praise and recognition that it rightfully deserves. With that being said, this was quite a surreal and exciting moment. Thanks a lot for sharing this wonderful interview!
I bet it can tell you something about this lady you don't know!
Her cousin Pamela More played Mary in Queensryche Operation Mindcrime!!
Two excellent singers and related!
Very cool. How'd you know?
I need to find out more about Pamela. Thanks for the fun fact, Hayley!

OMG, Terri hasn't aged a day. This woman CANNOT possibly be 61 years old. To be fair, their version is totally iconic but I get why the band hated it. No More Words is a banger too.
Saw them live at college, front row. She came off the stage, walking across the length of the stage right in front of me. She was giving that mean look as she moved until me and my friend, and then she smiled. Was one of those moments, for me. Was one of the best shows of my life!
Berlin had beautiful exotic melodies. “Masquerade” is beautiful
The stories where a band's hits conflict with the band itself is a really intriguing dynamic. Goes to show that a song's status changes with time. Cheers as always
Shows how the impacts of music can be so dynamic.
I also loved the movie Vision Quest, starring Matthew Modine. And I believe “No More Words” was featured in that movie. It may not be as iconic a movie as top gun, but my cousin, Mark Feuerstein, who was a wrestler at Princeton, who also got the acting bug at Princeton, also loves that movie. And now he’s a very successful actor.

Love this song. Remember exactly where I was when I first heard it. Awesome interview Prof.
This is as great song that said "Here's a different side of us. We're not just a pop rock band". Good that they covered this song and made it their own; it did a lot for them, the 80s and Top Gun.
It’s always good to be different.
Did you listen to the interview? Nunn said they performed it for the publicity and the money that might follow, and because she wanted to do more work with a top producer, not because they wanted to make an artistic statement.
@@houyhnhnm1411 I heard that; I should've made it clear that the effect of doing this song was to show them in a different light.
@@stargasm1000 Ah, I see what you mean. I agree with your point. I just happen to view it as an unflattering light.
If you want to hear Berlin's artistic statement that is even more radically different than their usual pop-rock, check out "Pink and Velvet" on "Count Three & Pray" (the same album as "Breath"). Even slower tempo than "Breath," guitar-heavy (David Gilmour, no less!), more pain, death theme, 6:38 long. Gilmour takes it to the level of "Comfortably Numb," but even without him the raw emotion of Nunn's searing performance would make it a masterpiece.
That song is very personal for me (as I'm sure it was for a lot of people). The day that I proposed to my ex-wife, as I was on my way to see her, that song was playing.
Terri Nunn just looks fantastic. She seems like she would be a lot of fun to hang out with. I love that she turned the interview around at one point and asked Adam how the song was for him when it was released.
Such a great powerful emoting voice. She's still got it, wow! Loved Berlin, from the beginning and still listen to them.
I’ve always liked, take my breath away, but it has grown over the years to become one of my favorite songs of all time. I never get tired of hearing it. I like some of Berlin’s other material as well. Great interview.
What a wonderful talent she is. Trusting her own instincts to create a timeless song. Her original nich audience I am sure got over her success. Keep up the great work. 😎

I'm rather flummoxed that this woman's career didn't continue on to some sort of A-List artist status. She's deeply talented and entirely captivating.
I don't disagree with any of that really, but .....she seemed kinda drunk to me, lol.
Terri is just so nice and down to earth. I was 16 when Top Gun came out and it was the first song I'd heard from Berlin. I listened to that soundtrack so much. It was probably a year before I decided to find out more about Berlin and I just loved them. My favorite is also Like Flames, but I love so many of their songs.
I live just a few miles from the "Top Gun House" (restored, and now a pie shop in Oceanside, CA), and it's funny how something like that makes me feel much more connected to the movie ... and this song. Great episode Adam!
How I miss those years, when music was great and not like todays crap that has no passion or soul, in my opinion. Take My Breath Away is an awesome phenomenal song.
I still can't believe Giorgio Moroder wrote this. I've always hated this song, but I absolutely LOVE both Giorgio Moroder AND Berlin. (Berlin's debut album, _Pleasure Victim_ , is one of the greatest debut albums of the New Wave/New Romantic era, and is certainly one of the most underrated.)
Moroder wrote the music. More likely the lyrics were written by Tom Whitlock.
@@80ssynthfan48 Yes, and Dog People drummer Tom Whitlock, the cowriter, died four months ago.
"Pleasure Victim" was not Berlin's debut album; "Information" was. I love Giorgio Moroder and Berlin, too. I don't hate "Take My Breath Away;" I just got very tired of it, including from having to play it and no other Berlin song many times in commercial radio.
Giorgio’s Together in Electric Dreams is a must listen as well.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Hi Lilly, Yes, Philip Oakey and Georgio Moroder's "Together In Electric Dreams" is great; I have the 12 inch record of it and the "Electric Dreams" soundtrack on vinyl and CD.
She is fantastic! Thanks for interviewing her.
She is a terrific interview! And Berlin was a fantastic band
This song fit so well with their style and vocals. Their music is great, but Terri's voice, Terri's face, and the rest of Terri are the allure of the band. Still beautiful today. In short, Terri's aura is hot and smoldering sexy smart.
You got that right!
The "Top Gun"soundtrack was the first album I ever bought. I was 12 when the movie came out, and I had been listening to and loving Berlin since hearing the singles from the "Unknown Pleasures" album, both on the radio and on an American Bandstand-like TV show called "MV3", which focused more on new wave music. "Take My Breath Away" was an absolute monster hit in '86. Many artists would score huge movie theme hits later on, but this was Berlin's "My Heart Will Go On" or "I Will Always Love You". I still have yet to catch Berlin live, but they do play shows in my area sometimes. Teri is really a gem, and she still looks and sounds as great as she did when I first saw or heard her in '82.
Excellent interview and really cool on how she asked your opinion. Perfect song for the movie.
So cool that our wedding song was covered in this channel. So much back story! Thanks
I remember hearing that the band hated the song. Personally, I think Terri Nunn looks fantastic. She also has such an outgoing personality. Fun fact - she auditioned for Princess Leia in the first "Star Wars" movie, "A New Hope".
I have a video about that! Good call Greg!
@@ProfessorofRock, I will look it up. I remember seeing an early episode of the VH1 program "Bands Reunited". Terri Nunn looked gorgeous. And it was a good episode.
Carrie Fisher ultimately got the role
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980, yes, I saw "A New Hope" when I turned 10. It was the perfect age to see the movie. While I cannot see anyone else in the role but Fisher, I did see Nunn's screen test for the role.
@@gregwasserman2635 Is it on RUclips? I know she was a looker even back then, she was on Lou Grant in 1979.
Terri sang on the Sisters Of Mercy song Are You Living For Love. It's not SOM's best song, but it definitely rides high because of Terri's singing.
Did not know that. Thanks!😮
She's joined The Sisters Of Mercy this year for a gig in America. It's on youtube somewhere

The soundtrack of the 1st Top Gun was/is 1 of THE most memorable soundtracks of ANY movie ever!
