  • The making of one of the biggest rock albums of the 80s was full of drama, comedy, secret messages, and young lust. Def Leppard Pyromania... It started out with Def Leppard having to fire their longtime guitarist Pete Willis who was so drunk he couldn’t play the songs. They brought in a hot shot rookie named Phil Collen who became the missing piece that helped make this band one of the biggest of the rock era and the only rock band outside of Led Zeppelin to have 2 straight 10 times platinum records and this was the start. Joe Elliott was revved up and ready to go with iconic hits like Rock of Ages, Photograph, and Foolin... Up next, the story of a rock song that came from an old hymn book and the origins of the iconic gibberish that everyone has tried to translate for years but came from the band not wanting to say the same old thing. The story of a record that sold over 10 million copies but was cursed to be #2 never reaching the #1 spot… Next on Professor of Rock.

Def Leppard was on a steady path of progression leading to the recording of their 3rd studio album Pyromania in early ’82. The band’s debut LP On Through the Night was a platinum seller in the U.S. & Canada, and their 2nd album High & Dry was twice as successful- selling over 2 million units in America.
Def Lep’s invaluable partnership with pre-eminent record producer Mutt Lange was forged on the High & Dry album that led to even loftier achievements on their next two albums. Recording an album with Def Leppard was always an adventure.
There wasn’t as much turbulence as there was during the making of Hysteria, but the Pyromania sessions were not without drama. The biggest soap opera was the sacking of founding member Pete Willis. The band was well into the recording of Pyromania when everything came to a head. Willis was a notorious partier, and his alcohol abuse proved toxic for his bandmates.
After a heavy night of drinking, Willis stumbled into the recording studio completely unable to play his guitar parts on the track “Stagefright”.
Mutt was disgusted at his unprofessionalism, and told Willis to go home and “dry up.” The other three members asked then manager, Peter Mensch, to fire Willis, but Mensch refused. “It’s your band, said Mensch, you do it, you’re big boys.” Not only was Willis a founding member, but he had been a very integral part of the band’s sound, especially on the preceding High & Dry.
But Willis’s drinking had been a major issue within the band for several years. Def Leppard had lofty goals, and their potential for something grand with Pyromania was evident.
The last thing they needed was a toxic relationship to wreck their future prosperity. To replace Pete Willis, Joe Elliott & Steve Clark recruited guitarist Phil Collen, who had been playing with the band GIRL. Elliott & Clark had serious discussions with Collen about joining Def Leppard a year prior, since they were losing confidence in Willis well before his official dismissal, but decided to give Pete another chance to get his act together.
Phil Collen hit it off with the core foursome from the outset, and quickly established a brotherly relationship with the guys, especially with fellow lead guitarist, the beloved Steve Clark.

I was in 5th grade at a catholic school when this album came out. One of my friends was an accomplished piano player and the Sister who taught music class would have her play while the class sang. One day, my friend said she wanted to play "Rock of Ages" and Sister was very happy to let her. So the girl played the Def Leppard version and when she finished, Sister said she had never heard that arrangement, but that it was very nice. Those of us who knew what the girl was playing were trying not to laugh at Sister!

Ok Adam, prepare yourself for this absolutely true story. Back in 1984, I went to the Lutheran Church on my grandparents block in Detroit. My Grandpa was the doorman and my Grandma played the pipe organ. The pastor is in the pulpit and says, "Open your hymnal to page 333 and we'll sing Rock of Ages." I was only 7, but my eyes lit up. My Grandma was looking down at me with such pride that I was there that morning. She started playing and I started singing Rock of Ages. Except, I was singing Def Leppard and no one could figure out what was going on. My Mom still laughs about it to this day

The band Sum 41 has a nod to High n Dry in their video for the song In Too Deep, I believe right around 1:34 or so into the video if you pause it it's the album cover of High n Dry.
There's no way it's a coincidence, the video is a comedic look at the band in a diving contest against what looks like guy's from a college diving team who are wearing red Speedo style swim trunks, if you pause right around then it's definitely a tribute to High n Dry, and judging by the comments I think I'm about the only person who caught it.
They also have a nod to the 80's Rodney Dangerfield movie Back to School when one of the band members performs a "Triple Lindy" dive towards the end of the video.
Another 80's video nod from a band from that generation is the video for My Chemical Romance's song Teenagers, it's a copy of the beginning of the movie Pink Floyd: The Wall, they reenactment the beginning of the movie where all the teenager concert goers break down the doors of the venue and storm the place, I think I'm about the only one that caught that one to.

I was fortunate enough to see Def Leppard 3 times, the first in 1981 when they opened for Blackfoot, then for Pyromania and Hysteria, they've always been and always will be one of my favorite bands, and as a young guitar player back then they had a big influence on me, but not for guitar for singing, they made me realize I had to do more than just stand there and play guitar I had to be able to sing as well, to me they will always be one of the greatest rock bands ever and I still listen to their music on a daily basis❤

The album came out in the heyday of my early AD&D days and whenever it came on the radio while we played we would pause the game to crank it up. I translated the pre-song countdown to be "Oonta, Gleebin, Gloutin, and Globin", which I used as names for four of my characters, a set of dwarven brothers.

There were three tapes that I had to replace multiple times due to stretching, being eaten, or never returned from being borrowed: John Cougar's American Fool, J. Geils' Freeze Frame, and Def Leppard's Pyromania. Pyomania is without a doubt their masterpiece. No fast forwarding needed just press play, flip the tape, press play. Every song was rocked! However, Too Late For Love was the one that jolted my soul. Even today I still make sure the neighbors know that song.

Mozart to Metallica, Hank Williams Senior to Crosby stills Nash and Boyz II Men. As well as everything in between. But when people ask me to list my top five acts of all time. They walked out on stage and proceeded to decapitate the first 20 rows with Rock, Rock....and I realized just how unfounded my fears were. One of the best shows I've been to. I like to do karaoke and when I do "Pour Some Sugar On Me" it's a real crowd-pleaser, lights everyone up. When Def Leppard was most popular I was in jr. high and I remember distinctly that their sound was more upbeat and positive, celebrating life, than many other rock bands which were cynical. There's a place for all of that - it wasn't until the last 10 years that I've learned to appreciate that the more cynical songwriters were right to be anti-establishment - but Def Leppard is simply pure light and love rock energy, whenever I hear their music I feel absolutely uplifted in a way that no other music can do!

The biggest mistakes of my life! I'm a child of the 50's, 60's & 70's, I thought rock of the 80's was garbage so I quit listening. Man did I miss out! I discovered Def Leppard about 5 years ago. I love all their music!! Especially Armageddon it, Let's Get Rocked & Rock! Rock! (Till you drop)
An other big mistake, I won tickets from my local classic rock station for the Def Leppard/Journey stadium tour in Atlanta but wound up not going because our grand daughter was visiting from CA and my wife didn't want to leave her alone for the night so we didn't go. 😢

I have respect for this band. When the drummer lost an arm i a car accident, he wanted to quit for the sake of the band. They all banded together ( pun intended) to convince him to stay. So he now plays with two feet and only one arm, it still sounds great.

Always thought it a crime that the amazing High and Dry LP cover had the borders cropped out on the CD, losing its meaning. The front border with a crowd looking up at a dive into an empty pool - and the back with the crowd smiling at the outcome.
