    As a Dane living about one hour drive from the headquarters I can say that Novo Nordisk probably is the company in Denmark with the best reputation. It’s been like that for more than 20 years from my perspective. If you work there they will treat you good. And the thing about flashing your wealth that’s so true! Janteloven it’s called in Danish. From my admittedly limited time there I'd say the difference between Denmark and what most Americans would think of as a European socialist state is that Denmark has a freer market with less government interventionism than a lot of other European countries - albeit with higher taxes. It also has demonstrably more respect for the individual. Something like Christiania would never be tolerated somewhere like France. So it kind of has the welfare state side of a socialist country without as much of the authoritarianism/top-down control aspect.

Most of my peers don't like his teaching, although I enjoyed it. I appreciate the translational research carried out by companies like Novo Nordisk but these efforts are much less extensive than the basic research that underlines them. For every wonder drug there are hundreds of potential targets that did not turn out to be clinically relevant. Ultimately these drugs are the result of our understanding human physiology

Their Insulin story is als not as nice as portrayed, as they're only one of three companies producing it and very much part of that cartel, regardless of the original patent's license agreement to be "for the benefit of society". The demand for these drugs worldwide, are so big that the company is now investing 25% of its yearly revenue, to build new factories. Someone has to pay for that. Over time, the drug will fall in price, but the current costs we pay in other countries, is needed to get over this hurdle.

      How do you not understand your own medical system? In The USA the middleman, i.e. pharmacy benefit managers (PBM's), provide a useless but artificially necessary service which raises drug prices by like 1/3, then you have drug manufacturers which have monopolistic power, insurance companies, private equity debt leveraging on hospitals, device manufacturers, distributors, billing & data companies.
      Each of these takes a nicely sized gross margin and it compounds to make it very expensive for you at sale. Drugs are cheaper elsewhere largely because of state bargaining, stricter regulation, public insurance, public hospitals and streamlined insurance and tax regulations.

    • @StijnNLDutch
      @StijnNLDutch Месяц назад +4

      It’s 95 euro here in my country. Our government negotiates with the manufacturers and sets a price they are willing to pay. The only downside is that if there is a shortage, and there is nothing in the contract about it, the countries that pay for example $1600 will get it first cause of the profit margins.

      The CEO was asked this in the Congressional hearings they mentioned in this video. While he wouldn't (or couldn't) say exactly how much Novo makes per unit, it's estimated to be somewhere around 20-30% of the price. So that means that 70-80% of the price is "wasted" in the US system of middlemen and insurance companies. It's an absurd system that only benefits a very small group of people.

  • @jensstergard9380
    @jensstergard9380 Месяц назад +6

    Novo Nordisk is certainly helpful to the Danish economy but please don't talk about 'trickle down'! The concept is abused to make people accept inequality in society. This is very lucrative to the rich.
    The most helpful effect of Novo Nordisk is taxes, company taxes and taxes paid by the many scientists with high salaries. The tax money allows Denmark to be e.g. in front in the struggle for freedom and democracy, no country donate so much to Ukraine compared to the number of citizens.
    These Novo Nordisk scientists repeatedly produces cash cows to the company. When Wegovy and Ozempic begin to fade they may have something new, Nokia only had telephones. Though nothing may beat Wegovy as obesity is a natural thing in a society with the structure of the US.

    • @bzdtemp
      @bzdtemp Месяц назад +1

      You're talking rubbish. There is lots of trickle down.
      Novo is not only a company, it is a workplace and they employ thousands of people in both Denmark and all over the globe. And those employees earn money, which they then use to buy things and services thus creating new jobs.
      On top of that there is the health benefits coming from using the drugs that Novo make, those benefits not only help the individual they benefit their employees, their families and society as a whole.

      It's not stupid if it's impossible to cure the cause of the weight gain. Then you have to cure the symptoms.
      The US system is set up for people to fail and gain weight. No one is interested in the reforms necessary to take all the unhealthy crap out of people's diets and in stuff like healthy school lunches. Then you're accused of being a communist if you just want to make people healthier.
