December 2023 in a Nuttshell is my December wrap up video of books I read in December.
I now have a Patreon that has some cool benefits, including access to my discord server! This is 100% optional and thank everyone for their support!

I like the natural light, gives it a folksy vibe 😂 last year I was chained to tons of readalongs and buddy reads that really dampened my desire to read, so this year I'm only going to do a couple and stick more to just picking up what I feel like
Yeah I need to be able to just flow this year
idk how you always have the ability to make me interested in books that I know for a fact I have no business entertaining that i would like. the energy about books is just too infectious on this channel
I just hope you like a few of them hahah, thank you my friend 🙏
“WE ARE THE BEARS! THE BEARS FROM BEARTOWN!” My wife “made” me read Beartown last summer and… one of the best series I’ve ever read in my life! Blown away. Great story. Great characters. It’s a tear jerker.
I really loved it
Reading books I own this year!
Same!!
Great month to cap off the year, Jimbo! Here's to 2024!
Let’s get it Pat!
Love going with the flow. The natural lighting was a great change and worked well!
I’m currently reading MOI, The Spear Cuts Through Water, and The Dark Half. I’m not necessarily mood reading, still planning reads out, but trying to make a conscious effort to not rush through books to fulfill self-imposed and artificial deadlines.
Great way to finish out the year man, and one of these days ima get the darn Patreon pick!
One day! And damn you’re reading some heavy hitters
@@thefantasynuttwork yeah I’m in the thick of it rn between Malazan and Rainwilds lol
It's truly remarkable how you can sell me on any book, even if it sounds completely out of my comfort bubble, haha I love it. Republic of Thieves though... tried and true favourite, Lynch is indeed an incredibly talented author and I really hope we get more someday!
All here for embracing the mood reading in 2024, hope it results in an incredible reading year 🥰
Hope this year is good to you Esmay!
@@thefantasynuttwork Thank you so much. I hope the same for you :)
the natural lighting looks sooooo good
Thank you!
I thought the Nut button not working was going to be a joke that The Folding Knife couldn’t get the Nutt. 🤣 I’m glad that you loved it!
I’m trying to detach myself from obligations-buddy reads and readalongs-but it’s already not going so great. Haha!
Hahaha it’s hard to avoid
This is noticeably the brightest video I've ever seen you do. Looks great homie! The Rode product placement is nicely done as well 😉
Hahah it definitely was a bit bright for me 😂 use discount code NUTT for 69% off your next RODE purchase!
@@thefantasynuttwork Nice.
I read Ice back on 2022. Had never heard of it. Just saw it in the bookstore and thought that it looked interesting. Never thought I would see it talked about here on booktube.
It’s definitely one ripe for discussion
I always read a wide variety of genres.. basically everything but Romance, and while this year I'll still be reading Horror, Mystery/Thrillers, Hist-Fic, Lit-Fic, Non-Fic, Classics and Poetry, my main focus is going to be SciFi and Fantasy books and series.. the Year of the Chonk 😅 and I am so excited for it!
It’s gonna be a good year of reading
Happy New Year, Jimmy!! I actually like the natural light, even if it's fickle. 🤣 I can pick out more books on your shelves! I'm attempting more mood reading this year because I set too many TBRs ahead of time last year and it stressed me out... But I still definitely plan to start Malazan, The Witcher, The Expanse, and at least a few GGK works! Everything else I hope to mood read from my shelves... Except a few choice preorders, like Trials of Empire. ^^
Im really hoping to get further into the expanse
Happy New Year Jimmy!
I already finished my Final Empire reread and am reading Shogun and Man in the High Castle for the rest of the month.
Let’s get it Jimbo!
All we do is win
Finaly reading Fool"s Assassin, after finishing my Liveship re read, and 2 chapters in and already loving it !
It’s so good
I pretty much always mood read. Can’t stick to a tbr to save my life lol I started off the year with the green bone saga. A little over half way through jade war now and really enjoying the series so far.
Green bone is pretty thrilling
Great Patreon pick. Wind-up bird chronicle is one of Murakami’s best. I really need to read Parker, trying for Folding Knife sometime this year. Every month I try to read 3 books from a series and 1 standalone, but that usually gets mixed up for various reasons.
You would like folding knife I think
I'm always smiling for some Republic of Thieves love!!!
And I'm SO interested to see what you think of Murakami. Please keep me updated!
I will send you many voice messages 😂
I just re-read wind up bird chronicles in November. I remember loving it 10 years ago. And while I still liked it, it didn't have the same impact. Starting my year with Shogun and maybe green bone.
Greenbone is pretty fun imo
I am trying to do structured reading. But i always end up mood reading. I just go with my flow hahaha. And i started this year with reading and finishing the Blood of the Starsseries by Elizabeth Lim
I am currently continuing The Expanse series. I am on book 3 right now about to finish it, I'm going to include the short stories as well so it's probably what I'm reading for another couple months 👍
I need to get to book 3
Happy new year! I’m starting my year off with continuing to read Royal Assassin with my fiancée. I’ve also picked up Stephen King’s Desperation and am listening to Fellowship of the ring!
Royal Assassin is one of my favorite sequels
@@thefantasynuttwork Yeah I’m 40% the way through it and I know I’ll reread the whole trilogy based off this book alone.
I’m reading the claw of the conciliator at the moment. Definitely taking it slow and will go with the flow in 2024 😅
Claw is good!
I started The Dragon Reborn as I continue my first journey through the Wheel! Not sure what I'll pick up next, but I'm thinking a 1-2 book break before I pick up The Shadow Rising... These Wheel books are chonky.
They’re very thiccccc
Happy new year man!
I started off the year by finishing The Power of The Dog which was fantastic, 10/10 audiobook narration by Ray Porter. Currently reading Boys In The Valley, which I'm really really enjoying even though horror usually isn't for me.
Power of the Dog is one I’m keen to read! Hope you’re well my friend
Love your recap videos! I got to know about so many good books through this series of videos
I’m so glad to hear that
Definitely more structured for me this year, I already have so much planned and the ARC’s and buddy reads make it much more difficult lol
Trying to go at my own pace and not get overwhelmed with it. Looking forward to a great year with us all, Jimmy 🤘🏽
ARCs definitely make it tricky haha
Hi Jimmy. I finished 2023 with a re-read of A Christmas Carol by Dickens and the only fiction by Rainer Maria Rilke, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. 2024 has begun with a holdover from last year, Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez. It's an award-winning, well written book, but for some reason I'm not feeling compelled to read it right now. I'll come back to it. I just picked up an indie horror novel, The Game of Five by Robert Wayne McCoy.
happy reading!
I was a bit down on Republic of Thieves, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. If I recall, I also finished The Republic of Thieves last month...to be honest with you, December felt like a blur for the most part. Here's the books I finished in December:
Mr. Timothy
Sir Gaiwan and The Green Knight (Bernard O'Donohue version)
A Cold Place for Dying
The Republic of Thieves
City of Thieves
Saga volume 11
I hope 2024 treats you well Jimmy, and lots of great books to be read. Great video as always!
Thank ya!
I'm working towards completing series. I'm in the middle of 6 or 7 and want to knock some of those out. I'm also trying to read a bunch of physical books I have that I'm going to donate to the library once I'm done. Need more room in the house!
I really really need to finish some series lmao
Brother has been on my TBR for a long time. Hope you have a great New Year. I’m doing half structured, half mood reading!
Def worth the read!
Republic of Thieves is actually my favorite of the three
That’s awesome!
Windup Bird Chronicle IS one of his most liked ones, so maybe you'll enjoy it. I'm actually gonna try to read his 1Q84 this month. I read Kafka on the shore years ago and was okay with it, a little minimalist, but i didn't get along well with Norwegian Wood.
My January stack I'm pulling from:
Shogun
1Q84
Dragonbone Chair
Lies and Sorcery
Sailing to Sarantium
City of Last Chances
Tad!!
I’m there with you not Lynch’s best still a very fun ride with the guys.
Love those two so much
@@thefantasynuttwork Right?!
Noooo! I need to wait another month before I hear your thoughts on Sword of the Lictor? Nuuuooooo! That was my favorite entry in Book of the New Sun. This year I think I’m going to read ASOIAF. I started it when I was like 15 and never finished it. I think I should get around to that.
It’s definitely my fav of the first three
I am 100% doing more structured reading this year, last year got messy.
Good luck Jimmy, the variety has been really nice 👌
Thank you!
Happy new year! Im starting 2024 off with Gardens of the Moon. Im more of a mood reader but still use my tbr as a decent guide. I normally have one series that is a for sure read each month and then i just mood read my other books.
I’d give a large amount of money to be able to experience malazan for the first time again
I am glad that you enjoyed Folding Knife.
I read only one Murakami- Kafka on the Shore. Yes, female representation was crap but I enjoyed his writing. It was very philosophical.
Hope I like it 😬
Pop up videos now. Fancy.
Finishing up an Elric story so I can get to My Effin Life by Geddy Lee.
Then likely Song of Arbonne or the third Edan book.
Curious about final thoughts on BotNS since you are told the ending about 50 pages into the series.
Interesting to hear that about BOTNS!
January for me is Terminal World by Alastair Reynolds. So far it is great! Reynolds has yet to disappoint me.
I’d like to read more from him
What a fascinating month! I’ll be very interested if you ever do that author bio vid, as interesting author lives are always so intriguing to me. Glad Republic of Thieves and Folding Knife were hits, as I also want to get to them soon!
I’d love to do more biography type videos, they’re just a lot of time haha. Happy reading Ben!
Happy reading to you! In January I finished my last December book, "Night Circus". Mixed feelings on it. I'm taking part on a yearly long marathon / challenge on a Romanian Facebook group. The Jan theme is a book that won a 2023 prize, so now I am reading and enjoying "Nettle and Bone" on my 4th atempt.
I’ve wanted to try nettle and bone!
That science fiction, fanta-esque (sp?) description of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is even stranger than the story itself! 😂 So happy Republic of Thieves got the Nutt button. Great wrap-up! ❤
thank you my friend!
Got a lot of great reading plans this year. Started the year with The Dragonbone Chair and finished yesterday. Loved it! Reading Dune Messiah right now. Hope you enjoy your reads!
Hoping for children of dune this year for myself
Josiah, Stephen Aryn’s channel is doing a Memory Sorrow & Thorn read along with panel discussions. I think the first one for Dragonbone Chair will be at the end of the month or early February!
Saw “Boy’s Life” on the Patreon list and was rooting for that number 😂…just read that and what an awesome and emotional book. Hoping you get to read it soon!
I’ve heard good things!
If you are looking for new horror, Road of Bones by Christopher Golden is really good. It's a winter setting on the real frozen stretch of road in the far north of Russia and Siberia. Great folklore and nature horror. Really short as well. Btw, I am a fan of the natural light 👍
I'll check it out!
ICE sounds really intriguing, as well Anna Kavan! I have got to try K J Parker since so many booktubers have been recommending him.
Hope you enjoy it!
I am going to read Book 2 of Grace of Kings and finish the Age of Madness Trilogy. I'm on book 3.
Nice!!
Scott Lynch is one of the few writers that can actually make me laugh out loud with his writing. Crossing my fingers for more stuff by him 'soon'. Always have been and always will be a mood reader. Any sort of formalized structure completely destroys my enjoyment of reading
I find his writing so funny, and that's definitely not common in most books I read
I imagined this room being in a basement.
My old setup was hahah
Not much structure really. Read I'm most excited for this year and really want to continue:
1. More Black Company. Currently on Dreams of Steel and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite series. I LOVE the direction the series took in the 4th (5h if you count Silver Spike) book, Shadow Games.
2. Continuing discoworld
3. Finishing Earthsea. It's not that long and I will probably eat this up in a month.
4. Ana Karenina. I cannot wait to jump into this one. Especially when everyone says that if you love Erikson you might love Tolstoy. I think I'm privelaged that I can read this in a langauge that is pretty close to Russian actually and so I am doubly excited.
5. Continuing Wars of Light and Shadow. On pause atm because of how demanding it is, but I am loving it so so so much. As someone who loves Tolkien's melancholic beautiful atmosphere in his writing, Janny really nails this same feeling, but has her own voice as well.
5. Pillars of the Earth. Already read like 200 pages of this one years and years ago, but sth came up in life and dropped reading altogether at the time. Can't wait to return to this one.
6. John Willaims, of course. Thanks to you guys lol.
7. GGK, hopefully. I really really want to get to GGK, but we will see if time permits. Kind of want to first get through some other books on TBR that I have on my shelves before buying more books.
Other than that, if time permits or I just decide to pick a book up on a whim: Sun Eater, R Scott Bakker, Book of the New Sun (100% reading this sometime in the near future, but 2024 might be too early), Tad Williams, more Donaldson.
I really need to get back to Anna Karenina
Wish I could be a planned reader, but I cannot. Always have been always will be a mood reader. I am in a work bookclub, and that has proven hard. Granted, I am by far the most well-read, and they haven't picked books I like too much yet. Or I read them years ago. But mood reader is always what I am. I have no idea what I will be reading next on average.
I have a loose idea of a few I’d like to check out but largely going with the flow now
"He could write a linux manual and I'd read it" ahahah
Hahaha it would probably be hilarious too
come on over to the Horror side... it's quite fun here 😄 have you read any SciFi/Horror? that could be a good transition too if you're looking to explore more. That's one of my favorite genre blends.
I have done a few that tread that line
I'm trying to balance mood reading and stuctured reading this year. We'll see how that goes, because structured buddy reads might win out 😂
its tough to balance it all hahah
I started off thinking I would do a structured tbr...but I'm feeling more mood read....so we will just see. I'm reading The Way of Kings (rereading part 1) and first 2 books in Saxon Tales...hopefully rereading Gardens of The Moon so I can continue with Malazan this year...
I’d like to fit rereads in this year but I’m not too hopeful lol
I need to reread so I can keep going...been a couple of years since I read them originally so I have no idea what happened....
@@thefantasynuttwork
Great video! I had very similar thoughts about Folding Knife and The Republic of Thieves. Interested to hear your thoughts on The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (I haven't read it and not sure if Murakami's for me, for the reasons you mentioned)
So far I’m 2 chapters in and… it’s weird lmao
Here's what I read
Things we never got over by Lucy score
The wolf gift by Anne rice
The woman in me by britney spears memoir
Crossroads of twilight by Robert Jordan
Killers of a certain age by Deanna raybourn
The foxglove king by hannah whitten
The painted Devil's by Margaret Owen
Dreamland by nicholas sparks
Age of vice
Season of love by helena greer
A holly jolly diwali a merry little meet cute by julie Murphy
Once upon a December
Weather girl by Rachel Lynn Solomon
The family game by Catherine steadman
Great month!
this video changed my life
🤣🤣🤣
Ok, I’m gonna be camp of not liking natty light. Not because it looks bad though. But, because when I think of Jimmy nuts, I think of the purple/dark background with Bobby in the back. Right on either way though lol 🤙🏻
That’s fair!
I am definitely a mood reader, I'll break character if it's a good buddy read but overall I'm really picky about my reads because time is so limited. Right now I'm finishing The Will of the Many and can not wait for book 2 this year. Easily my favorite book of 2023. Then it's back to The Bound and the Broken to get caught up with that unless I'm tempted to read Shogun which is also on my list.
Shogun is a big one
My only scheduled read (until Stormlight 5) this year is the last Empire of the Wolf book next month. Other than that, kind of winging it, and I'm excited about that too, to see what books I wander to this year. Reading the 2nd Seven Kennings book by Kevin Hearne right now, now that the trilogy is done. Definitely a unique fantasy and quite enjoying it (would be curious to see your take on that one too, seems like it might be different in a way you'd enjoy). Other than that, I think at some point I'll do The Five Warrior Angels trilogy, The Death Gate Cycle, the new Sebastien de Castell, whatever else catches my eye. Oh and the Stormlight reread of course. Also been rereading some Fitz and Fool. Enjoying some comfort rereads lately.
I enjoyed the first Kennings book in that series, I should get back to it
Hey Jimmy. Hope you'll find the time to finish Beartown. I read Allen's Goodreads' review about it, and his review was fantastic. Fredrik Backman is currently my Number 1 favorite author, and I can't wait for you to review his writing style. Love the way you review writing styles. i get to learn something new.
I finished it and loved it!
@@thefantasynuttwork Will you make a video about it?
@@deanryanmartin I’ll cover it in my wrap up for January definitely
@@thefantasynuttwork Sounds nice. Looking forward to it, Jimmy.
I'll be reading Dust of Dreams this month, The Crippled God next month, with Return to Edan sprinkled in. After that, I decided to spend some time reading only the first book in several different series, only because I'm interested in how authors introduce worlds, concepts, characters, etc.
I love the beginnings of series so much
jimmy you should read Red Mars, you like slow-boil plots, from the looks of it
I’ll look it up!
I can't wait to get to Republic of Thieves! I think I'm going to wait until the release date of the novella is announced... if ever lol. Also The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is great, but yes, the representation of women is... very Murakami. I'm planning on being far more loose with reading because I'm finishing my degree.
I'm hoping his writing of women doesn't ruin the experience for me lol
I never do structured reading, I find I can only mood read depending on what kind of day or month Im having. This year Im looking forward to the German translation of the new Murakami book "The City and its Uncertain Walls", and Exhibit by RO Kwon. Also The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P Djeli Clark and Navigational Entanglements by Aliette de Bodard
Clark is sooooo good
I recently started reading westerns as i needed something different from my typical fantasy series. Out of the handful i read last year two really stuck with me Lonesome Dove and Blood Meridian. I really think you'd like Blood Meridian it's really stuck with me. It's a short nightmarish fever dream of a story set along U.S. Mexican border.
Blood Meridian is of my favorite books of all time!
Yeah it was wild man I finished it like a week before Christmas and I'm still thinking about it
The natural light is very nice. "Wrong turn" is a great movie, I saw it in the movie theatre when came out. In january I've red the first book in the Xenogenesis trilogy by Oktavia Butler, and I'm continuing even if the thitd book is not translated in italian, I've red "Lord of light" by Zelazny. I'm planning to read the "Long price quartet" (only one book is in Italian), and I will read "Il Grifo e il Leone" a book about the war between Genova (my city) e Venezia in the middle age.
I’m a fan of wrong turn and even the bad sequels haha
Ahh great reviews man! Are there supernatural elements in Brother? I'm not into horror because of that, but the scenario sounds very interesting to me (reminds me of a movie someone told me about - I can't remember the title, but I know the producer is Greek - where parents taught their children that forks are spoons and just played with language in a way that isolated them from the world). I've also added Ice on the list. I've not reached out postapocalyptic books, but as a dystopian lover, I feel I should look more into this genre (though your description sounds like magical realism, which isn't my cup of tea 😅). I've read and enjoyed The Lies of Locke Lamora and will continue on at some point, I've just not been in a hurry. I already have Red Seas Under Red Skies to go on my Kindle, so we shall see in 2024. ☺️ I'm curious about your thoughts on Murakami, everything I've heard has never compelled me to pick his works up (and I've watched full-length reviews).
This new year, I'll mainly focus on historical fiction set in the Ancient world as I've decided in the middle of 2023 - after being struck by unexpected inspiration - to write a novel set in Ancient Greece. I'm still debating about the time period, but I've been having a blast reading through hidden gems. 👌
I'm wishing you an amazing year! May your family be healthy and at peace, and I'm looking forward to new exciting content (without burning out), as always. 👏
I’m wishing you a great year as well! Brother has no supernatural elements, it’s definitely more gore/slasher/psychological horror
I like the natural light (minus the bright on the books but it's not a deal breaker 😅). How is your infection? Did the dr help?
It’s looking cleared up, fingers crossed 😬
I'm *kind of mood reading this year, although I'm prioritizing a lot of book series that I either am already reading or just want to do so. I hope you love Wind-Up Chronicle - it's probably a top 3 work of Murakami for me (I've read 13 or 14 of his books). I'm definitely interested in seeing your thoughts!
I'm excited to give it a go! I have a ton of priorities in my head but if I wrote them down I think i'd realize quickly there's no chance I fit them all in this year lol
Haha best not overwhelm yourself with that!
So glad you're enjoying BotNS! Are you planning to read Urth directly after or taking a break? I personally read it after reading the first four twice and it was so good! I think it's really enhancing the story. Also got a lot out of it because of Alzabo Soup. I only did that for Urth chapter by chapter. Great podcast.
I finished Beartown #1 last month. Really liked it. He's a great writer. Looking forward to your thoughts :)
I'd like to get to Urth soon after but it's really up in the air. I like to read a good variety of authors so maybe towards the back half of the year!
Yooo jimmy!! Can we possibly get a setup/room at some point?
Yeah possibly!
This year I’m starting off with Blingsight by Peter Watts. Then second book of Prince of Nothing. After that maybe some other single novels. We’ll see what mood of genre I’m in.
Question though and it’s kinda off topic; Jimmy you’ve said you do jiu jitsu, this year looking to get into it along with Muay Thai. On top of lifting and work, how often would you say you roll on the mats weekly? Any advice for the martial art would be greatly appreciated.
I do bjj 2-4 times a week and Thai usually once. Best advice is to be consistent and patient. First year or so is really hard
I plan to read more books I want instead of reading only short books to hit some meaningless number. Currently, I am on book 2 of The Sun Eater series, The City and the Stars by Arthur C. Clarke and A Clash of Kings by GRRM. I hope you're doing well.
Yes! Numbers don’t matter in 2024 😎
love me some Linux manuals
Same tbh
This made me laugh, so random 😅
Oh, man. We have very similar tastes and I hated Wind Up Bird. Coming from someone who really liked Disgrace, it's a LOT. Any recommendations close to Folding Knife? Heavy on the economic scheming
Nothing quite like it but maybe some Neal Stephenson I’ve heard?
Do you plan to do more Sun Eater reviews?
I’ll cover them in my wrap ups
I'm just trying to finish series I've started. I think I started over 30 series last year and finished 1. 😑
Same tho 🥲
I also read Ice in December! It was pretty good, really creepy. Well-written, but not a new favourite...
Yeah there’s a lot there but it’ll take a few reads for me to get it I think
What up Lit Fic Jim
Ayyyy
@@thefantasynuttwork nothing but love man. Glad you loved Republic of Thieves. I loved it. Most people I've talked to and seen that aren't crazy about it were waiters for RoT.
This is a fun video Jimmy, but.... I think you should spend all of 2024 making Bas Lag videos.
Hahahahah
Jimmy! Where abouts in West by God did you grow up in? Imma fellow WV boy myself, from the Eastern Panhandle.
Motown!
I recently read Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Murakami. There were some interesting themes but I found the story to be meandering and the way the main character talked about sex and women to be very cringy. I hope you have better luck!
Basically same thing then lol
@@thefantasynuttwork Oh no haha 🙉
this video look different lol. No the lighting was good
Look more HD 😂
@@currangill430 I’m in my HD era
I had the idea that I was going to have a very chill start to 2024, so naturally I ended up accidentally overcommitting. XD
January lineup: Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier, Sword of Kaigen by ML Wang, Guards Guards by Terry Pratchett, A Court of Broken Knives by Anna Smith Spark, Golden Son by Pierce Brown (reread), I Never Promised You A Rose Garden by Joanne Greenberg, Beyond the Wand by Tom Felton... and a couple others on the side. Lol. XD
We'll see how this goes.
I think you got it!
My January is pretty stacked with what I'm expecting to just be banger after banger after banger. I'm reading Shadow of the Torturer right now and really enjoying it, then I'm reading The Scar, then Grace of Kings. After those I'll either read Iron Council, Wall of Storms, or Claw of the Conciliator. I'm gonna try and knock those three series out over the next couple months. I'm hyped AF for The Scar.
BOTNS gets soooooo weird but good
@thefantasynuttwork After Perdido Street Station I'm all about weirdness right now. The weirder the better!
