Really appreciate the breakdown of your pick holding and placement of your picking hand on the bridge. As an intermediate beginner guitarist, I've struggled to understand these two techniques because everyone seems to do it differently, but rarely do they explain why.

The one clip to destroy careers of all real life and online guitar teachers, as it is in a class of its own! I wish this existed 25 years ago when I was trying to learn to sweep pick and ended up brooming instead. This video would save me at least 6.66 years of struggle and suckage! The attention to the most minute details, each innuendo of sweep picking is covered and explained. Best video on this technique I have seen to date and I've seen at least 669 of them...Killer job sire!

I took lessons when I was a kid off an old bluegrass guy that was hellbent on forcing me to play Gordon Lightfoot and shit. I struggled to learn anything because I hated it. Then one day I taught myself the solo from the Duncan Hills coffee jingle from Metalocalypse, because I actually liked it. He made fun of me because I had struggled for months with sheet music, but taught myself sweep picking in a week.
I'm very excited to start trying to do sweep arpeggios and learn the guitar I actually wanted to learn.

Having a song to practice the boring bits really helps - I never even considered trying to learn sweep picking until I had a sudden urge to play Love Walked In by Thunder and it turns out the intro is perfect beginner-level right hand sweeping practice. Getting a consistent sweep speed on that intro is a great way to practice that...
...then you just go learn Tornado of Souls and the left hand sorts itself out, ya know, after a bit more practice 😄

12:27 Actually I’ll disagree with you. Mindless practice is really good ONLY IF you know EXACTLY what bad habits to look out for and to avoid.
If you don’t, you’ll speed plateau, making no progress, and that’s where hardcore analysis comes to save the day.
Only if you know what to look out for, you know what you’re doing (which most beginners don’t) and if the only thing that’s stopping you from mastery is repetition, only then is mindless practice a really good idea.
Otherwise, I like how spot-on and helpful this video is for complete noobs.

I can't currently play with my picking arm due to shoulder issues, but could practice there fretting hand. Once my shoulder issue is resolved, I'll definitely check out your patreon content.
As a bonus I can practice using the same guitar as you so pretty much guaranteed success 😉🙃

Came to this video a few months ago and I was so frustrated with the lack of progress I was making with the excercise give, so I stopped and decieded not to learn sweeping.
It took a few months for me to encounter many songs that use it and I mustered the curage to try again. Today I meanged to do it.
Patience is key and I suggest to all the gutarist out there who are practicing and learning: if it is not going leave it for a konth or two, then try again. Eventually you can master anything. Just be patient adn dong give up completely.😊😊

Hello Beanley good morning. Terrific stuff: very clearly and logically explained like always, and i love your irony too... Compliments! Would you mind to answer a question? Do you have a sistematic process to establish when it is time to go on from what you are practicing today to new stuff (basically pure technique)? My problem : I cannot normally bring my studies to the bpm speed i want to because it would last forever, and of course I have also to integrate new material in my routine. What are the signs you notice (or the process you use) to put that particular thing to the side (and maybe revisit it in the future?) and bring in new stuff to learn? i hope this make some sense :D Thank you in advance and keep rockin´! maxx

Man, I love you. I’m 50, play since I’m 18 and the only guy who could explain this to me in all this time died before we could meet a second time. I feel I might be able to finally get this.
One question: I usually play extremely stiff picks. Would you suggest holding it rigidly or loosely (talking about the P, not the D)? I mostly pick from my fingers and prefer to move the string instead the other way round, so I’m curious what’s the smarter move in that respect.
