Also.. I use the exact same method as you Wish this video was around when I first started cutting firewood. Would have saved me a ton of time trying to revive chains that were used for digging lol
My old man always told me, don’t let that chain touch anything except wood or your gonna sharpen it. I never wanted to roll the logs over because I’d forget the can-hook and have to sharpen the chain anyways lol
All and all, anyone working with timber has a tough job day in and out. So just be safe out there! ZBrub keep up the great content. Still bust my chops u only sharpen your saw 2x a day and I’m filing mine every tank of gas! 😂
As somebody with over 10 seasons of tree experience. Literally working for one of the biggest personally owned companies in New York state, it doesn't matter if your saw hits the ground. As long as there's no rocks on the ground dirt will never dull out your saw.
If I ran my dad's chain saw into the dirt I heard about it and felt it. I quickly learned to either roll logs or find levers to get them off the ground. It is a rare occasion when my saws hit dirt.
@@rodzilla134 that's how it was for me he was a logger for 10 years and bucked logs 3 years before that expects me to be as good as him never killed a chain in the dirt and never bent a bar
Work for a guy who swears its not worth it to preserve or sharpen a saw chain. His philosophy is that he can buy chains so cheap that the cost of the time lost in keeping a chain out of the dirt or punky wood is greater than replacement. Gets absolutely hostile if i point out how plainly wrong that is.
Yeah…. That’s a good tip if you can roll the thing i suppose… I’ve done my fair share of big cuts, and sometime there’s just no rolling them… hell, some are really hard to move even once they are cut into cookies… especially when its freshly cut and full of water.
I did residential and commercial tree removal for 18 years, I LOVED it, working outside, busting ass, good money, worked with good people. My youngest daughter used to cry cause daddy killed trees all day. Lol
❤️Bro !!!!! Thank you so much. I didn't know this. I bought 4 packs of 2 chainsaw. Even though I've have sharpen them. The tree was was over 70 inch diameter. And to remove the tree stomp took 3 days with the 35 hp hydraulic stump grinder
..finally..a vid of an American..or Canadian..using decent chainsaw safety...don't mess with chainsaws..they will win...oh and that shot of him pushing the tip of the chainsaw into the wood, a bore cut, is DANGEROUS...don't do it till you are experienced and comfortable with a saw...Google kickback...
Thanks for the positive words Dean! I am Canadian! Chainsaw definitely are super dangerous and the proper PPE should always be used when operating a saw! Thank you for watching!! 👍👊🙏
This also helps wear the bar more evenly, although I avoid upwards cuts myself, I tend to just roll the log and do my best to intersect the original cuts
I just lay my logs on smaller 8-12" diameter logs, keeps them nice and spaced off the ground; when I'm done I cut the small logs I was using as a spacer on the rounds that I cut from the first logs. I do most of my chainsawing on Oak snags I've cut down, they can get pretty big and hard to roll.
I mean if you take a second to roll the log you’ll probably save time overall since you won’t fill your chain and then cut slower for the rest of the cuts and you won’t have to sharpen the chain as much. I generally just cut all the way through the log and don’t cut the dirt but will do this sometimes If it’s not a big chunk you can normally roll it with your foot and it only takes a second
With that stihl it's less of an issue, but for amatures (no shame, we all start somewhere) be careful when undercutting or working out near the tip of the bar. One of the major spots kickback tends to originate from the top half of the engaged side of the bar sprocket, when the chain tooth becomes stuck in the material and all the energy suddenly transfers into pushing the saw backwards. This is why you don't tend to see super wide diameter circle bars any more-theyre practically all curve and are as such very dangerous. If you're having to cut with the top of the bar, do not engage the end sprocket in the cut. Also always wear your chaps, especially if you're not using some kind of a log stand or are felling trees. Chaps are cheap, leg injuries are not. Also non safety chains may cut faster, but the safety ones improve every year and that gap keeps getting smaller so I recommend just using a good quality low kickback chain for most applications. Most users can't tell the difference.
Learned that from my old man , he was never a professional logger or anything but he cut firewood for 40 years , not sure where he learned his skills or if he taught himself but he was good lol.
If someone doesn't already know to not go digging with their chainsaw I might not suggest/demonstrate that they should do an undercut with the tip of their saw.
Idk, when i cut logs i usually keep a log on the ground, and then put the second one on the first one to keep it lifted of the ground, and i save time, and never touch the ground either
