  • The LA County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved returning beachfront property to the Bruce family. Bruce’s Beach, now known as Manhattan Beach, was purchased by Charles and Willa Bruce in 1912 as a resort for Black families who were excluded from other beach areas. A legal battle to return the land to the Bruce family has dragged on for years. Bruce’s Beach now enters escrow before officially transferring to the family. The Bruce heirs will receive $413,000 a year in rent from LA County.

Bruce and his family were really good people for letting black families who were excluded from other beaches go onto their beach because most people back then were really racist

Happy for the Bruce family for winning this long overdue battle. A statue of Willa and Charles Bruce, along with a plaque of their story on the base, should be erected and paid for by the city of Los Angeles. That way everyone can know their story and Bruce and Willa can still “watchover” their beach.

Talking about if its like the other plots of land around it. about 15 to 20 homes on it. selling for between 2.5 million to 9 million. then LA would have Price of Land, then Taxes on said Land, then Taxes on said House on plot of land. would think less then 49 years LA would recoup the 20 million they offer

You realize that means the Bruce family would have to give it up and leave for Africa. Since, you know, they aren't Native American either. If returning the land means all Non Native Americans had to go, then don't think black people would be excused from that. Slavery wouldn't be a valid excuse as black people also participated in stealing Native American land. A region of Oklahoma was reserved for black people after the Civil War, as it was Lincoln's promise to them. Problem was the region giving to them had a tribe driven out: black people didn't care about that. They were so happy to have a region all to themselves and a chance to build up their community they didn't care about who was there before them. There were battalions of black Union soldiers known as the Buffalo Rough Riders. There mission was to drive out the Apache so both white and black people could settle there.

Should we go back and pay the decendants of anyone who lost land by eminent domain? Or just the black people? Also you realize it's just a tiny lot 500 ft from the water. It's not even a beach, it's literally a small block like 200ft x 150ft. This video is terribly misleading because they're giving the impression it's a huge beach.

@@person86422 Forcing someone to sell their property when they don't want to is wrong. Let me ask you, if you had some property that the government told you they'd pay you for but you weren't interested in selling and told them no, so then they just forced you to take the money and go against your will, and years later that property ended up being worth $20 million that would have been yours if you hadn't been forced to sell, you would just be fine and dandy with that?
You're the one being terribly misleading.
I don't see why we shouldn't pay the descendants of those who had their land stolen.

20 MILLION DOLLARS 1 time OR 413,000 x 50 years = 20,65000 Hhmmm i say take the 413,000 a year as it can go on for 100 years or more which amounts to 40mill for 1 generation.....

Yeah, but with sea levels rising a beach today could potentially be in the ocean tomorrow. I thought about the same thing you said, but beaches aren't safe investments unfortunately.

I hope they sell, if we were in a different world I'd advocate for the same thing you said, but owning anything near a beach is way to scary in our modern era.

The beach could be under water by tomorrow? I get that’s an exaggeration but unless there’s been significant land erosion and significant rising water levels on this particular beach it’s safe to say that it is a safe investment especially since it’s in Los Angeles county.
