  • The Bottled Imp - Episode 075
The Bottled Imp gets shipwrecked as ‘The Tempest’ realised in 2011 directed by Julie Taymor and stars Helen Mirren, tosses us around a bleak and magical island.
Shakespeare, Shakespeare, Shakespeare. What’s it all about, eh? Shakespeare isn’t fantasy, right? Wrong! The great bard seemed to love fantasy and ‘The Tempest’, thought to be written in 1610 or 1611, is a grand example of this.
The main twist that director Julie Taymor brings to this retelling, is the switch of gender for the magician exiled to a magical island. Instead of Prospero, we have Prospera played by the wonderful Helen Mirren. It’s a bold move. With staunch Shakespeare traditionalist, Taymor is messing with Shakespeare at her peril. This decision could upset a large chunk of the films audience. But then again, it could be a breath of fresh air for some.
‘The Tempest’ is a tale of revenge for the sorceress Prospera. She conjures up one hell of a storm against her enemies.
It seems fantasy dates back further in the literary world than first imagined.
