  • Take an inside look at life in a Jesuit community of scholars, the Bellarmine House of Studies in St. Louis. Most of the 23 men living in this community are students at nearby Saint Louis University. The USA Central and Southern (UCS) Province serves in 12 states, Puerto Rico and Belize and has approximately 400 men who serve as pastors, administrators, educators, spiritual and retreat directors and in other roles.

Your contribution to the Church is enormous after centuries and you keep the spirit of your founder, obedience, chastity, poverty. The world today offers other values, money, relativism, gossip, individualism, that don’t fill the human soul. God bless the Society of Jesus.

I hope you'll be a true Jesuit forever. I admired Jesuit priests very much.

I was a Jesuit for three years. This included a two-year novitiate and one year of philosophy, spent in Chantilly, France. I made the decision to leave the order, but it was not a clear-cut decision. I now live in Hiroshima, where I taught philosophy for many years at Hiroshima University (my doctorate was on Aristotle's dialectical reasoning, as was my Master's, but the training for this was done at Harvard.) I remained in contact with the Jesuits here, but , even after so many years,I have not yet grown accustomed to having the Mass etc in Japanese. I suppose I could say that I am half-in, half-out. The Jesuits have a presence in Hiroshima and Fr Arrupe was a notable general. Now we have a Jesuit pope, but the church is clearly in crisis.
